Well this morning we left Plovdiv to head back to Sofia. After the usual train fun we have come to enjoy (really how can you call a train 'express' when its 30 minutes late?!?) we made it back to Sofia, or as they call it here, squiggle. Sofia bored us before, there was little to do and were here purely because the plane happens to be here. Were stopping in a different hostel this second time, a place that's won loads of awards and shiny things. When we arrived we were given a talk off the staff about what to do in Sofia (most of which we had already done). Sadly this was wasted on us, since tomorrow at 9-ish we'll be off to the airport. We took the tram, each armed with two tickets for ... read more

Well we are in our final country and final stop of the trip. We are in a place called Plovdiv, about 3 hours from Sofia where we were yesterday, and where we will be tomorrow for our fight on Monday. Sofia was odd, it didnt seem like a capital city, not helped by the fact we arrived there at 6am. There was little to see, which we knew would be the case. We went to see a cathedral and a crypt which SB probably went on about yesterday. This morning we came here after much fun. We struggled to find the tram in Sofia, and once we did find it we were fined 10 leva each for carrying rucksacks! For the entire trip we've been asking if were okay to carry rucksacks and most places have ... read more

Ok so we've already left but we wanted it on the little map thing. Currently in Bulgaria where there are yet more thunder storms and mosquitos which are eating us alive. (we call them Dracula). Arrived via night train last night and got to the hostel at around 6.30 am our time this morning (half 4 for you). Managed to check in and get a few hours sleep for a small extra charge, They also gave us breakfast so it was all good. Then we went for a wander and found all there seems to be here....nothing. We went into a pretty cathedral and down to the crypt where there is apparently some world renown religious art (I wouldn't know) we managed to confuse the lady on the desk with SS's aber uni card for a ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest July 6th 2009

Well, an eventful weekend. We found a Matt at Budapest airport, and also managed to find our hotel, two successes. We had booked a 3-star hotel over in Buda, a tram ride away from the city. After dumping our stuff at the hotel we went for food, and tried to eat food outside, before the heavens opened, forcing us inside. There was much beer in funny shaped bottles for Matt and pretty drinks for me and SB. First night we had stopped up past ten in a long time! The first day was spent doing general sight seeing things on a hop on hop off bus. We saw Buda Castle, Citadella, parliament building and other places we hope Matt will remember. We got off the bus to find a neo-nazi demonstration taking place which the police ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Central Croatia » Zagreb July 1st 2009

At request, here is a blog post :P (Written by SS, SB is doing something more exciting, like sleeping) We are in Zagreb, Croatia. Today was the worst day expected for me, (SS) as my degree results were being puiblished and this hostel has one computer, which is usually occupied. Therefore I got up early to steal it. Obviously there was then the time change, which meant I had to check my results at 10am, not 9am. Anyway, lalala I passed. Therefore now I am Sarah Seaton BSc (Hons) and all that woop. I'm not specifying class on here, loads of people I dont know read this! But I passed, so will (hopefully) be seeing most of you at graduation in a fortnight! (flights pending!) Well as I said we are in Zagreb. My results kinda ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Ljubljana June 29th 2009

Anyway, we never updated this in Salzburg, which is where we were before here. We travelled via Salzburg pretty much for the sole reason of going on a Sound of Music tour. We spent about half a day doing this with the most terrifying lady I have met in my life. At 9am she was horrifically bubbly and bouncy, and this started to grate after about five minutes or so. Some of the tour stops were pretty cool (the pavillion had to be done obviously) whilst others were really stretching to find a link with the film (pretty lake). We saw the church where the wedding scene takes place which was nice. It was also interesting to hear about the real Von Trapp family story. Scarily enough we met the scary lady again, the next morning ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna June 25th 2009

Today there was sun. woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Five minutes of sun and I am burnt (SS). Next time we see sun she should wear sun cream. Though to be fair, we hadnt got much of a reason to expect sun. The sun lasted around 5 hours. Woo! Today we went to see a big building called Schönbrunn Palace. It is huuuuuuuuuuge. Apparently (according to SB) it has thoooousands of rooms. (1441?). Were not too up to date on our Vienna history so we have wikipedia-ed it and still remain a bit confused. Did people live in all those rooms? How would you clean it? Apparently Austria had a Royal family till 1918, even so the building is a little huge for one family! We walked to Gloriette which gives a view of the entirity of Vienna, but the ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna June 24th 2009

Well then we made it to Vienna, only an hour late! The trains have been awful the last few days! For some reasons the two seats we booked were also behind each other, so we got to ignore each other for five hours or so. We had planned to camp in Vienna. We had looked at the forecast and see that 't-showers' were predicted, no worries! Yeah, we arrived to what can only be described as 'torrential' rain. With thunder and lightening. We were unimpressed, late, and wet. We decided not to camp, and went to find tourist information, which was closed. Argh! Anyway, finally we found informatiopn and a hostel in the 'West End' of Vienna. Its full of very loud school children, we are afraid, BUT we are DRY! We went and got food, ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague » Old Town June 24th 2009

Well we're not in Prague anymore but in Vienna (I (SB) wanted to put the czech republic on the travel map). The day started well, we arrived only 2.5 hrs late after an interesting night on a night train witzh a very scary guard. The people in our carriage arrived, cried and left which made us feel so special. Prague however was very pretty, if a little damp. We decided we wanted to go to Prague Castle which apparently is lovely. We found it, but we couldnt find a way *into* it! Once we did we did we saw the changing of the guard, in which no guards changed... Odd. (Prague Castle is apparently the biggest in Europe, its more like the biggest extension in Europe). We found that we could go inside, if we paid ... read more

Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków June 21st 2009

Well the sun lasted all of one day and its raining again. Raining for two weeks, what did we do to deserve this? Krakow is nice but the hostel was rubbish and we nearly got run over by a tram. The hostel was rubbish for a variety of reasons that we shall summarise: - Had to pay by cash, but wasnt told this - No cash machine - Nearest cash machine was in Krakow, 7km away, by taxi. - Spent the last of our cash to get more cash to pay for the room, whilst they held Sarah B's passport hostage. - If we hadnt had that cash, who knows. - No cash machines worked in Krakow - Took about 6 attempts to make one work, and we withdrew all our money (well, nearly all of ... read more
