This morning, I made my way over to Fremantle. Hopped on the train, visited the E Shed Markets and then off I went to C Shed where I would be picked up to go whale watching. The engine of the boat immediately lulled to me sleep but just as I woke up and looked out of the window, I spot the first whale of the day. It's then whales galore as we follow three pods which are actually mothers, babies and some kind of male stalker/protector. Just as we were about to leave, the captain turned on the engine which resulted in a mother whale full-on breaching out of the water! It was spectacular to see this massive creature gracefully jump so entirely out of the water and sink back into it again. The trip was ... read more

After arriving at my hostel in the middle of the night, I head up to my dorm. It's pitch black and I can't see which bed is vacant but I've managed to wake someone up so I may as well ask. Ah it's the top bunk with the desk in front of the ladder. Oh good. I woke up to discover that I've been put in an all boy dorm. Oh dear. I spent the day wandering around Perth, visiting the WA museum (which I loved!) and the art gallery (which I didn't love.) I then buy myself some Aussie strawberries and have a lonely mini-picnic by the Swan River as the Sun went down. I returned to the hostel and went out with the guys in my dorm to do a lot of people watching ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Adelaide November 1st 2010

I have to admit that I had absolutely no expectations of Adelaide whatsoever but I was surprised at just how much I liked it here. I met Sarah for a browse around Adelaide's shopping district and we decided to head over to the zoo. I was initially horrified when I walked into the zoo and saw two women standing at a table with an array of real fur. They looked like they were selling it but I really don't know what they were doing with it and I was a bit too shocked to ask. Hopefully it was some kind of zoo demonstration. The nicey nicey zoo zoo has two new pandas which you can only view at certain times of the day to acclimatise them to their new home. They were my favourite part of ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Port Pirie October 30th 2010

It was another long, long drive from Coober Pedy until we reached civilisation at Port Augusta. It had rained so much that the city had flooded and caused what looked like a brown swimming pool to form across the road. Australia...you can't handle the rain. The journey continued on to Port Germein. The home of the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere... and not much else. As we pulled into the camp, there was an old rusty bicycle chained to a tree reading 'emergency vehicle only'. In any other town, I would have taken this as a joke but here, I wasn't so sure. Because of the rain, we couldn't sleep in our swags so were given a chalet type thing with two rooms. One with three bunks all piled on top of each other ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Coober Pedy October 30th 2010

The first thing we did today was hit an old opal mine and watched a video from circa 1992 about the history of opals, we were then shown how the stone is cut followed by being taken into the actual mine. In Coober Pedy, the majority of people live underground. The "houses" are actually quite nice and if you didn't know you were underground, then you wouldn't know you were underground (funnily enough.) We were guided to an example of one of the first underground burrows and then to a "modern" one (from the 70s). I reckon I could probably live there if I had to. They then went down a further level into the old mine and that's where my claustrophobia kicked in. I made it down the stairs but turned around and came straight ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Uluru October 29th 2010

After waking up and picking the last bugs out of my hair I walked into what can only be described as a graveyard for moths and cockroaches... or the camp showers. They weren't like this yesterday so what happened? I have never seen such a collection of dead/pulsating bugs congregated in one place! Bugs really don't normally bother me but this made me want to vomit. It was a very short experience and I was out of there like a shot! I packed up and went to do the 10km base walk around Uluru finding paint on the rock, patterns in the rock, water pools and other hidden treasures. It was early so the temperature was perfect for the walk and it was a clear day so we were able to see the rock in all ... read more

Prompt awakening at 4.50am for a rush back to Uluru to catch the Sun in reverse to last night - rising. It was a little chilly but I wouldn't have missed witnessing sunrise on the rock for the world. I'm glad I woke up! The Sun came up just by the side of the rock with an array of oranges, pinks and purples. Wow! After having woken up a little bit, it was time to leave Uluru for now and go to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) to hike the Valley of the Winds. Kata Tjuta is a range of ancient rock formations and looks like lots and lots of mini Ulurus all lined up in a row. It was fantastic to walk around and once again was a place that offered brand new scenery and beautiful ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Kings Canyon October 27th 2010

Up with the Sunrise to make our way to Watarrka probably better know as Kings Canyon. The first challenge of the day was 'heart attack hill' nicknamed so for a reason! But for the first time on my travels, I was actually able to keep up with the guides. Either I'm getting fitter (unlikely) or the guides are getting slower (also unlikely so what's going on?) We made it to the top and the view was truly something else! I have seen so many breathtaking views this year and yet I'm still finding scenery that amazes me and looks unlike anything I've ever seen before. I'm a firm believer that it's a small world but there sure is a great deal to see in it! Through the gorge we went and on the waterhole. The water ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Alice Springs October 26th 2010

Alice Springs. Interesting place. After a very long wait in Cairns Airport, I flew to Alice Springs and was surprised to see how green it was. It has been raining here so much that there is fresh green grass and colourful wildflowers all about the place - something you only have the privilege to see once every thirty years or so. Maybe the rain that's been following me around isn't such a curse after all. I was picked up for the adventure through the middle of Australia and we began to collect the others. " There are only going to be four of you on this tour. There are normally at least 18." This could be interesting then... The first pick-up is an Israeli guy called Yanni who whilst I understand what he says, I just ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Atherton Tablelands October 22nd 2010

I had booked on to an 'Uncle Brians' tour and was collected by Cousin Paul to make our way to the Atherton Tablelands. As we set off, the Sun was shining and it looked to be a beautiful day. It was deceiving, about ten minutes into the journey, the rain showed its face again and was back with a vengeance. We headed out onto the Bruce Highway through Babinda, the wettest town in Australia and on to the Devil's Pools. Aboriginal legend has it that a beautiful girl, who was lusted after by all the men in the area but made to marry an elder took her life here after running away with her one true love and get caught and torn apart. She was so distressed that she threw herself into the pools but her ... read more
