Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cape Tribulation October 21st 2010

Today was my visit up to the world's oldest rain forest in Cape Tribulation. Almost. First stop on the way is a small wildlife park where we were introduced to some seriously cute Koalas. Asleep in their trees, not a care in the world. One of them woke up to yawn but all this was a bit too much for him so he went for another little snooze. It was then time to stroke a baby croc and an old python. I'm not sure if it was my imagination playing tricks but the snake seemed to be edging closer and closer to me which meant a little journey to the back of the crowd was in order. I wandered around the sanctuary , smiled at a crocodile, waved at some wallabies and then.... kangaroos! They exist! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns » open water October 19th 2010

Cairns! Awesome. I really like it here. It's a pretty small city but all the locals still say 'hello' as they pass you, it's hot, quite pretty and you can shop to your heart's content. Today howver, I left the city to journey on the Ocean Freedom to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef in search of Nemo. Despite rain on the mainland, a little way into the reef, the Sun decided to come out to play which made the water sparkle several shades of blue and green. We reached our first destination and were let loose into the ocean for a snorkel. The waves were choppy so it was a little difficult to swim but how can you complain when you're on the Great Barrier Reef? The Coral was just beautiful and surrounded by all types ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Airlie Beach October 16th 2010

I feel like I have been in Airlie Beach forever. Today, I went to meet Rona who is lucky enough to be working on a Whitsunday Island/boat. We didn't get up to much exciting (for a non-backpacker that is) but just caught the bus to the good shops and cheap supermarkets. It was lovely to catch up with Rona, an old friend by travelling terms even though it was only short and sweet. The afternoon brought with it a swim in the lagoon (which is strangely right next to the (jellyfish-ridden) sea) with Martyn and his friend. Followed by another evening at Beaches, ending with everyone going for drinks on Rich's balcony. Finally time to leave Airlie, I checked out, stored my luggage for the day and went a wandering again. Until I was soon back ... read more

13th-15th October Hello Habibi. On to the boat and our shoes are all confiscated! NO SHOES ALLOWED! We're given a little talk on how to behave etc and then set sail - using the engine. At this point, the rain was pretty bad and it was more than a little choppy on the water. I quite liked it but I think it was making a few people a bit seasick. We were allocated our rooms and mine was... interesting. Just enough room for two bunks, no window and no door. They had put me in a room with a rather eccentric German guy named Julian and a French couple Jon and Carolyn (who is pregnant.) We walk into the room which is a little claustrophobic with all four of us in there and Carolyn turns to ... read more

Hop off the bus to be the only person not greeted by my hostel - they don't run shuttles from the bus station. So, in the rain, I start walking in the hope that I'll be able to find it (forgot to check where it was!) Luckily, Airlie really isn't too big so it wasn't difficult. There's a queue at check in so I get in it and watch as all the people in front of me check in. My turn. "Sorry you can't check in yet. You'll have to wait until 11.00am." It's now just about to turn 7.00am. Normally, this wouldn't bother me but I was pretty tired from the bus, everyone before me was able to check in and it was raining so there was nowhere to go. I can't complain too much ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Agnes Water October 9th 2010

I arrive at the tiny Agnes Water "bus station" and am picked up by my hostel, 'cool bananas'. Stupid name but great place to stay. Walk into the hostel and it's all green and leafy and everyone's just chilling out in the garden or watching DVDs in the lounge. It's a bit late so Janine, a girl I'd met from the bus, and I went to explore the teeny town and find something to eat. I think there were about eight or nine shops in the whole of Agnes Water including a bakery, supermarket, video shop (yes, video) and random cafes. I returned from a good dinner and chat with Janine and really started to feel the effect of the last few days. Agnes Water is definitely a good place to get over Fraser Island. The ... read more

Today, I took a ferry over to the lovely Tin Can Bay to feed wild dolphins. This is where you have the opportunity to feed the resident wild dolphins, Mystique and Patch. Mystique, the 19 year old alpha male and Patch, the 23 year old female. Both endangered Indo Pacific humpback dolphins. The first of the dolphins to come to Tin Can Bay was Mystique's grandfather who had been badly injured from a shark attack and beached himself ashore. The local fisherman nursed him back to health and set him back into the waters on recovery. He remembered the fisherman and returned regularly for a little bit of fish. This tradition passed down to Mystique's parents and he is now passing it down to his pod. To feed the dolphins, you buy two fish from the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Fraser Island October 6th 2010

We began our journey from Rainbow Beach to Fraser Island bright and early, and what a journey it was. Smoothly, we began to roam across the sand beast, only for trouble to start. The car behind us broke down completely, causing an unexpected pit stop in the middle of the bush. Refusing to start, the passengers had to sit and wait it out for a mechanic whilst the rest of us were shown to our first lake of the island. Down a little pathway we go and, wow, I’m stopped in my tracks. This is the most stunning lake I have ever seen. McKenzie you are beautiful. Crystal clear, bright blue water at the front faded to a dark night, sky blue in the distance. After a couple of hours in the sun, we were a) ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Rainbow Beach October 4th 2010

Five hour bus journey to Rainbow Beach. Very small town where the friendly locals say 'G'day' as they pass you. I take a little walk to check out the beach and it was perfect timing too - the Sun was just setting, the sky several shades of pink, the surfers catching the last waves of the day and a whale splashing around in the distance. Although admittedly, it was so small and far away that I'm not actually sure that I saw it. The next day was all about Fraser Island and what to do and what not to do there. After this long, boring speech, the hostel took me up to the sand blows (think that's what they're called) which is like a mini sand desert on the edge of town overlooking the sea on ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Brisbane » Central Business District September 29th 2010

Get to Brisbane and get the feeling that it's going to be a bit of a quiet one so my first night is spent sleeping. It's now my first full day and I decide to go explore. Over the bridge I go and past a museum with dinosaurs outside of it. Definitely on my list of things to do (anything with dinosaurs is automatically on my list!) I end up wandering around for the best part of three hours, finding little walks along the river which was quite cool. For the next three days in no particular order, I did the following: Visited a man-made beach in the middle of the city which was very pretty but a little strange; Went to the casino, bought two chips, wimped out on placing a bet and cashed my ... read more
