Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Surfers Paradise September 27th 2010

Hop, skip and a jump over to Surfers' Paradise! I arrive, take a little walk to my hostel, check in, dump my stuff in the room and in walks Leanne. We ask the typical first backpacker questions "where are you from?" "How long have you been in Australia?" etc etc and then Maria and Sylvia walk in and after 20 minutes of chat, we finally find out each other's names! I spend most of the afternoon chatting with my roomies and then went for a wander around the city which was much, much bigger than I expected it to be. It kind of gives this impression of what I expect an Australian Dubai to look like with all its high-rise buildings. Every night, the hostel organised trips to bars and nightclubs and tonight, we were off ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Byron Bay September 25th 2010

And the Australian journey begins... So long Sydney and a 12 hour bus journey later, hello Byron Bay. It was pretty cold when I left Sydney so I was kitted out in a jumper, jacket, jeans and trainers but looking out of the window upon arrival at Byron, all I could see were shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. Finally some good weather! I get of the bus and a guy from my hostel is waiting with a little van. One minute later and I'm home. Check in , walk into the room and I have my first ever meeting with the lovely Franzi who wanted to check out Byron. And so we did... First stop, the beach! The lighthouse overlooking it and it was surrounded by distant hills. Beautiful. Then a walk into the hippy/surfy town ... read more

South America April 28th 2010

Last day in South America and I'm trying hard not to cry. Due to a lack of small camera, I have no photos of Buenos Aires except for La Boca where I was brave enough to take the SLR out for the day. So I get up early, order a taxi to the airport and then run out with the big camera to take some last minute emergency photos. Run back and the guy at the hostel says there are 3 others going to the airport so I can share with them. One of them, Jamie, ends up being on my flight. We got there quite early and Jamie and I got in the queue and were there for quite a while. There was some sort problem with the computers so 40 minutes before departure time, ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento April 27th 2010

Uruguay! All I can remember about getting to the ferry port was that it was early. I do remember waking Amanda up and meeting Vikki and Vijay and then I remember being on the ferry and sleeping. Nice ferry though - I had a whole row of seats to myself to stretch out on. Poor Vikki was the only one left awake. A few hours later and we're in Colonia, Uruguay. We hop into a taxi and are taken to the old town. Between the four of us and with the very short distance from the port - the taxi was mega cheap! We arrived at the wall of a very pretty little town. All of the house were either white or grey stone with cobbled streets, old fashioned lampposts and 1950s cars outside. I loved ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 26th 2010

A pretty quiet day in all. Vikki, Vijay, Amanda and I go in search of our tickets to Uruguay. We get to the ferry port and Vikki and I have our passports so we can buy our tickets there and then but Amanda and Vijay have to come back the next morning. Eek. That night we were off to the last Bomba de Tiempo - an awesome percussion show. In the evening, Vikki and I asked at her hostel how to go about getting tickets and the guy was like “you better get down there now, it's the last one so they'll sell out really quickly.” OK so we'll just go get Vijay and make a move (just as soon as I get changed.) Where IS Vijay?! Whilst I've gone to change, Vikki and been looking ... read more

“Sacale una foto” they cheer as Boca Juniors score their first goal. Awesome. Tonight, I went to Boca Juniors at home with the lovely Vikki and Vijay. Their hostel had arranged for a bus to take and people to look after us whilst there. We got there early and were taken into someone's back yard where there was a bbq, tied up dogs and feral children hitting the gringos when they refused to give them money. After about 20 mins here, they march us down the road, through 2 security points, to the stadium. Women and men separate. There were no seats in our section so we sat down on what we thought was a prime step. Until the devil's family showed up. A mother and father with three young sons and older daughter with her ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 24th 2010

The rest of my tour group's last day in BA. So sad. I wish they could have stayed longer or I could have gone with them up to Brazil. In the day time, we went to the cemetery where Eva Peron's (Evita) grave is. The graves were elaborate to say the least- all little buildings beautifully designed. It didn't look like a cemetery at all. We managed to pick up a crazy Saffa outside Vikki's hostel who was a bit snap happy with his camera and a bit fast-running with his mouth. Not a favourite of mine. We then left and went to market (which was right outside.) I love this market! It's full of stuff priced to rip of tourists but it's still pretty cheap. As a big group, we decided go our own ways ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 23rd 2010

A move to my new hostel. A 20 minute walk in which I manage to get pick-pocketed and have my second camera of the journey stolen. Luckily (and I use the word lightly) that's all they took and I'd just switched my memory card the day before so only lost a day's photos. All booked into the hostel, dumped my stuff and then went with Tam to meet Vikki, Vijay, Amy and Molly for lunch (which Tam very kindly bought for me to cheer me up about the camera.) The rest of the day was pretty quiet. I was exhausted and decided it was probably time to have an early night. At some point, my new roomie walks in and wakes me up, scrambling around looking for something. I told her to put the light on ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 22nd 2010

After a 20 hour bus journey, I made it to Buenos Aires. Awesome. We couldn't check in so went for a bit of a wander with the girls to check out BA. First to the opera house which was closed for refurbishment, then to the court and then back. I spent most of the afternoon in the shops and did not see one Argentinian woman who wasn't perfectly dressed in full fashion. I LOVE this place! In the evening, the girls all decided to dress up for the tango show! It was nice and a little weird ro see us all in dresses, wearing make-up. We were picked up, and taken to the show, ordered our meal and then it was time to dance! A tango lesson. We learned eight steps, practised them over and over ... read more

Today, we decided to rent bikes and cycle to a mountain I believe is called Cerro Otto (could be wrong). It was pretty cold. And windy. So windy in fact, that the cable lift up to the mountain wouldn't go. So Marcel, Vijay and I put our bikes in a taxi and were dropped off at about ¾ the way up. Marcel cycled up while Vijay and I tried for a bit then gave in and pushed them the rest of the way. The others said they were going to cycle all the way from the bottom and meet us up there. Crazy! The idea was cycle down!! The view over Bariloche's lakes was worth being in the win and rain for. The lakes were genuinely incredible and so still despite the rain. We got to ... read more
