After arriving at my hostel in the middle of the night, I head up to my dorm. It's pitch black and I can't see which bed is vacant but I've managed to wake someone up so I may as well ask. Ah it's the top bunk with the desk in front of the ladder. Oh good.
I woke up to discover that I've been put in an all boy dorm. Oh dear.
I spent the day wandering around Perth, visiting the WA museum (which I loved!) and the art gallery (which I didn't love.) I then buy myself some Aussie strawberries and have a lonely mini-picnic by the Swan River as the Sun went down.
I returned to the hostel and went out with the guys in my dorm to do a lot of people watching in Mustang. Interesting crowd. I left them to it and passed out pretty early.
I spent the next day over at King's Park after meeting the lovely Mr Michael Johnson (who I had the pleasure of travelling through a great deal of South America with) for lunch. Mike directed me to the park and off I went to sit in a
shady patch of grass and and take in the pretty spectacular view of the city.
Disturbing the tranquility, something to my left caught my eye. It's a family. Pretty normal. Except the baby kangaroo they're playing with. I know you're thinking, this is Australia, there are kangaroos everywhere but it's just not true and here's the weird bit... The mother picks up Joey and places him, upside down in a big patchwork bag and he jumped around in it until presumably, he fell asleep. Bizarre. I genuinely was not quite sure how to react to that little scene.
Despite Perth suffering such a drought that winter - it skipped over spring straight to summer, it of course, began to rain. I found shelter and then decided to give into the rain and just go for a walk around the park and its botanic gardens.
I met Mike after work and he kindly drove me to Cottlesloe beach. He headed over to the gym whilst I went and watched the Sun set over the beautiful Indian Ocean. It was the first time I had seen the Sun set over the sea in Oz so it was a brand new experience and I can already see why everyone raves about the beaches in WA, they've just got that bit more of something special to them than the rest of Australia.
I went and bought myself some chips and slowly wandered back to Mike's gym, temporarily distracted by the incredible noise from the hundreds (no exaggeration) of colourful birds singing up in the trees.
Mike was then even more kind enough to drive me all the way back to the hostel via some interesting suburbs an invited me to meet his girlfriend and family on Monday. All in all, a pretty good day in Perth.
