Another day, another bus journey. Crossing over into Argentina was definitely an interesting experience. Customs were not happy bunnies. They had a go at poor Vijay and Marcel for not speaking Spanish - “In Argentina, we speak Spanish.” Totally didn't care about the girls speaking English though. Got to Bariloche and was put in a six bed dorm which was fun (although I still maintain that I'm too old for a top bunk.) Hostel was called Perikos and it was lovely- very cosy and cute (gezellig). Went to check out the town which is honestly chocolate heaven!! Every type of chocolate you could possibly imagine (except, strangely, orange) in every form possible. Amazing! That night, everyone went out to eat large cows in a restaurant with no vegetables so I just stayed back and cooked with Molly ... read more

Puerto Varas. When hand-writing my journal, I'd completely forgotten that I'd even been here!! I wrote that I'd gone straight from Pucon to Bariloche. That's how much of an impact this place had on me. It was a small town and if it hadn't have been raining or there had been something to do, I might have enjoyed it more. Ha. We went to an amazing restaurant with great food and brilliant staff though but I can't remember the name of it - I think it was Puro Toro or something similar. Definitely the best thing about Puerto Varas. We did however, escape for the day and took a ferry to Chiloe Island which was quite cool. It's a small Island that is still traditional, with old houses, dress and culture. Very pretty and worth a ... read more

Last day in Pucon. Lazy day for me. A group of people went rafting but because I'd done it in Banos, I stayed behind and saved my money for something I'd never done before. Got told off by the receptionists for using the internet for too long, after waiting over an hour for the person before me to get off it - a 15 minute rule that only applies when they don't want to use the computer to play card games. Ha. I then went for a walk to try and find Sarah who, with Mike, had caught us up in Pucon! But failed. After hanging around the hostel and doing nothing more interesting than eating last night's leftovers for lunch, I decided to go on another mission to find Sarah and just happened to bump ... read more

Up for a 7am pick up to the active volcano - Mount Villarrica. I'd like to tell you a little about the journey but unfortunately, I was asleep for all of it. Since starting to travel, I have discovered this amazing ability to fall asleep anywhere, any time. It's a gift! One that I hope not to lose. Upon reaching the volcano, we gathered all of our stuff together, were given an ice-pick and told that we should try to stay together but may have to split into a fast and slow group. No prizes for guessing which group I ended up in! (And just in case you can't guess, it's the slow one.) We took the chairlift up the first part to save time and energy and luckily I was sitting with David (our new ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón April 13th 2010

Pucon! A very pretty little town not to be missed, overlooked by the active volcano Mount Villaricca. We arrive and are taken to our new accommodation which is a little house- with a kitchen! I was really tired and and really missing my old group and really didn't feel like doing much. But I then end up going canopying (swinging from trees on a wire like zip lining.) As with most things, I was utterly useless at it. And especially when one guy, I think his name was Nico, was waiting to unhook us on the next tree. On the first try, I actually made it to the other side as I did on the second attempt. But on the next turn, I almost made it across but started to drift back in the opposite direction. ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago April 9th 2010

Santiago de Chile! As a tourist city, you run out of thing to do quickly but I love it here and could very easily see myself living here in the future. On the first day, Sarah and I just went for a walk to and a look around the shops. I couldn't help but buy a pair of skinny jeans and a panda t-shirt which made me feel more like myself. I'm really missing my clothes! Everything I packed was so plain and boring. I know for next time to just pack the clothes I like! In the evening, some of the group went to dinner and then out to Bella Vista- the bar/club area. The whole street was full of people and a crazy group of people banging drums and singing in the street. We ... read more

South America » Chile » Coquimbo Region » La Serena April 7th 2010

After a long night bus, (in which I had the front seat on the top deck so I felt like I was in a video game) I arrived in La Serena. The hotel wasn't exactly my favourite what with the mold on the walls and stench of damp. Spent a bit of the afternoon watching football, browsing the super-size supermarket (seriously, this super-market novelty does not wear off in South America!) and watching TV (exciting times) until going out for dinner that evening. When we got back to the hotel, we decided to try the 'mentos in a diet coke' trick. Dropped the mento into the bottle and the coke exploded everywhere. In addition to finding Cadbury's chocolate, that was probably the highlight of my first day. At around 5.55am the next morning, there was a ... read more

Sarah and I woke up at a decent hour and decided to hunt for breakfast. No luck. Everything was closed so we had to settle for a couple of biscuits and carton of juice from the mini-mart. At 10am, we were picked up for an excursion to a “salt lake”. The driver picked us up and decided to tell us on the way that we had to pay an entrance fee which i found frustrating because I'd paid the tour company a fair amount of money and struggled to work out why that didn't include entrance fee and indeed, what exactly I had paid them for. And then to add insult to injury, they decided to mention that if I'd had my youth card, there would have been a discount. But anyway, we went on to ... read more

SALT FLATS! 12000km squared of salt to experience. We had two 4x4s come pick us up and Pablo had told Callum and I that we were to be in one car to speak Spanish to the non-English speaking driver and he would go in the other. The cars arrived and we chose the back one - the one that happened to have no music outlet whatsoever (the other had an Ipod plug in!) Anyway... we left at 10.30am to go to the train cemetery. Put simply, where all the old trains go to die. We got to treat it as a big kid´s playground, climbing around on the dead trains, pretending to drive them and pretending to fall on the tracks in front of them. Think the boys enjoyed it the most and it was the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni April 1st 2010

Chicken bus to Uyuni. Kim had told me that this was the bumpiest road she went on in South America and I was feeling a wee bit ill beforehand. Luckily (probably because of the elections) they had made them a bit smoother in certain sections so it really wasn´t that bad and I didn´t get sick. I did however, have a speaker right above my head which was played at full volume the entire journey and I couldn´t block it out with my MP3. Could have been worse. Not really too much to do in Uyuni except go to the most AMAZING pizza place in Bolivia (which also happens to have the best chocolate cake.) On the way back from pizza, we stopped off in a bar but it wasn´t allowed to serve any alcohol on ... read more
