South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi March 30th 2010

Three hour journey from Sucre to Potosi where we arrived in the evening. And are obstructed by a parade. It´s the week before the elections and the week before Easter and everywhere you go are parades. By children (who poke you with their batons if you happen to be standing in the wrong place at the wrong time) by teens, adults, political parties, workers etc... Got to the hotel, went to eat and went to bed. The next day I woke up and headed off to the mint with Suzanne and Sarah. An English tour was to start at 9am. After rushing to get there on time, the woman who runs the ticket office was 20 minutes late for work so we just sat and waited in the impressive building. The first thing we saw was ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Chuquisaca Department » Sucre March 27th 2010

Last night was yet another nightbus journey for me, this time to Sucre, the official capital of Bolivia. It was supposed to take around ten hours but two hours into the ride, the bus broke down in the absolute middle of nowhere. We had to wait another 2 hours for a replacement to arrive. When the new bus turned up, it was a bit bigger so I was lucky enough to have two seats to myself and was able to curl myself into a ball across them and sleep. That is until a girl trying to sell corn decided to take a seat on my head and then upon awakening, a man asked if the seat was free and I had to give it up. Good while it lasted though. 17 hours after leaving Cochabamba on ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Yungas Road March 24th 2010

Today, I cycled down ´The Road of Death´and as you can probably tell, I survived. This is the road (as featured on Top Gear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xClV7oRjj0o ) that used to be the most dangerous in the world having more deaths per year than any other until a bypass was built 4 years ago. The 61 kilometre road used to be responsible for 200-300 deaths per year and here is my story of survival... 8am pick up and we were taken to the starting point for a warm up before attempting the Road of Death. We were given our bikes, our gear and a little bit of food. Only I totally freaked out before even starting because when on the bike, my feet couldn´t touch floor. People were saying to me ´oh you don´t need to reach the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz March 23rd 2010

So far, I´m loving Bolivia. It´s completely different to Peru, very cheap and has a whole lot of character. Today, I visited the witches market which was cool but weird. It sells pretty much anything you can think of including potions. lotions, jewellery, clothes, rugs, and of course... shrunken, dried, dead llamas. Shame it didn´t fit in my rucksack otherwise, I definitely would have bought one of those back to hang in the living room(!) In the afternoon, a few of us went to the Bolivian Valley of the Moon which is basically a place full of craters that look like the moon. As you can probably imagain, I had a lot of fun pretending to be on the moon for an afternoon. I will however, have to visit the one in Chile for a comparison ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca March 21st 2010

One of my favourite parts of the trip so far. On Saturday, we caught a tuk tuk down from our hotel to Lake Titicaca. I shared with Callum and our driver won 'the race' to the boat which made for a bit of a scary ride on Peruvian roads. Hopped on the boat ready for a 3 hour ride to the islands of the lake. The first stop was on Taquile Island where we walked uphill for about 30 minutes to the main square which didn´t´have much in it but a couple of shops and a church (and a few kids trying to sell everyone bracelets they didn´t want.) We then walked back downhill to have a traditional lunch overlooking the lake and then had another walk back to the baot for our journey to Amantani ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco March 17th 2010

Back to Cusco, my Peruvian home from home. I was here before the Lares Trek too and loved it. It's a beautiful city that was the Inca capital in the past with beautiful golden buildings which were later turned into churches and Cathedrals by the Spanish after they stole all of the gold. A stunning town square, fountains, hills, mountains, Inca ruins, great food, coffee shops, art and markets everywhere. I was so pleased to be back to my new favourite Peruvian city. Started the day with seeing more Inca ruins around Cusco such as the lookout and the cemetary. It was weird in the cemetary because they buried the bodies in the rocks and we were allowed to go inside the rocks and look and around. In the afternoon, a few of us went to ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Lares Trek March 14th 2010

Sun 14th - Tues 16th March 2010: Hell. Because of the flash floods in Peru, my trip to Machu Picchu was cancelled. Instead of refunding the money, GAP sent us on the Lares Trek (a budget, bad replacement.) I would love to say that I had fun but I didn't. Well maybe I had 5% fun at a push. On the first day, it rained quite a bit and it was quite foggy too so I spent most of the first day with my head facing downwards. Our group leader ('Washington') said that we were the fastest group he'd ever had and I managed to keep up for a while and then I dropped back with an Aussie girl called Brit who turned out to be my trekking companion for the whole trek. Being cold, wet ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon March 9th 2010

South America has yet ceased to amaze me. Every single corner I turn seems to bring with it a brand new breath taking view and I have to say that Peru is currently the winner. This morning was a 5am wake up to see if we could see any condors flying through the canyon. We were so lucky. On the way to the condor view point we saw 4 sitting atop a hill and as they began to fly, 14 more decided to join them. What a great display - fantastic to see them flying through the valleys. And given that there are only around 70-80 condors in Peru, I felt very fortunate to see 18 all at once. Then there was a trek through the canyon for an hour, taking in the scenery. After the ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon March 8th 2010

Yet another early morning to get a private bus to the Colca Canyon - about 3 hours from Arequipa ( if you don't stop.) We however, stopped many times. Our first stop was at a little shop to buy water and cocoa leaves. Cocoa leaves are used everyday by people who live in the high altitude to help them deal with the altitude better (or really just because it makes them less tired so that they can get on with things oh and there are those who are addicted to them.) You need 500kg of them to make 1kg of cocaine so chewing a couple of leaves doesn't quite have the same effect. I chewed a couple and they tasted like really strong black tea. They were a bit disgusting so I won't be doing that ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Nazca March 6th 2010

Get up nice and early again (don't think this travelling stuff is easy) and admittedly I wasn't really feeling too good to start with but I had a flight over the Nazca Lines to catch and I didn't want to miss it. Got to the tiny airport and was shown a video of the history of the lines. But there were so many tvs in different languages that I couldn't hear mine. Luckily I had read up on them beforehand! The lines are geolyphs (drawings in the ground) of things like birds, whales, spiders and more but they can only be seen from above. No one really knows what they were for but there are lots of theories such as they were drawn for the Gods or done by aliens etc... We got onto a tiny ... read more
