South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Potosi June 28th 2015

Hello People, Today we had nothing planned, and as it was a Sunday there wasn’t anything open for us to do anyway. We did have a walk around Potosi however, to discover there really isn’t much here! I wrote up a cover letter for P&O to apply to the Tours and Excursions department because Neil has been offered Arcadia from October. There is not a youth department onboard, so I’m going to see if I can work onboard Arcadia in the tours department instead. It could be a long shot to actually get the job and then specifying only for Arcadia. Who knows what the future holds. All I know is that I don’t want to be apart from him for 3 months, and I don’t particularly want to be an unemployed travel partner...but a world ... read more

South America June 27th 2015

Hi Everyone, We arrived after what was in fact an 11-hour bus journey through the night from La Paz to Potosi (approx. 10USD). We managed to get a bit of sleep but it’s never the best when sitting. I was quite glad it was slower than originally thought; if it had been on time the bus would have arrived at 5am in the dark. But as it was 7.30am we felt quite safe getting a taxi. We have found so far there is little English spoken here in Potosi-so our Spanish numbers are very important to negotiate a price. We arrived at our hostel, but had to wait until 10.30 to get our dorm beds. In that time I spoke to mum and had a shower. Neil is feeling pretty ill with a stomach bug this ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department June 26th 2015

Hola Everyone, Once again we had a lazy morning until we had to check out at 11am. We had our normal bread and honey and banana breakfast in the hostel. We then put our bags in the hostel storage and headed out to the cable car that is in La Paz, there are three different ones but we picked the one that went up the highest point to look down on the city. It’s only 6BOB return (60p) and you get spectacular views of the huge city with the snow-capped mountains looming in the distance. We also went over the graveyards; here they bury the dead above ground in buildings in rows. The pictures look cool and they’re even behind plastic glass! As we had all day to waste so we walked to the clothes markets, ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 25th 2015

Hi Bloggers, We woke up with hangovers made worse by the lack of oxygen in the air anyway. We made it to the free breakfast but then went back to bed all morning. Oh well, La Paz was purely for a few rest days. We went to this cheap but delicious organic sandwich place for lunch then went back to our hostel. We had our washing done (5kg/£5), a bit expensive but we had pretty much run out of clean clothes since doing the Inca trail. In the afternoon I had a catch up with Parsons on viber J I haven’t spoken to any of the girls in months, so it was good to chat!! We had a very lazy afternoon! We only ventured out to that English pub in the evening to have exactly the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 24th 2015

Hey, We went for our free breakfast about 8.45am, then went back to bed for the rest of the morning. We booked to stay here longer because we were in long need of a rest with some lie-ins. This hotel is not the best- cold showers, gaps in the window so the room was freezing all day and night, the beds dipped massively so we were on top of each other most of the night and the door takes all Neil’s strength to hold the door up and in to move the lock across, so I have to ask him every time to let me out. We finished the left over pizza for lunch and then headed out for a short walk in the afternoon. We walked around the Witches Market, (if you blink you will ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 23rd 2015

Hello People, We woke up at 6am in the hostel in Puno. Our taxi arrived at 6.15am, which we had pre-booked the night before. We got dropped off at the bus terminal where we had a coach to La Paz (direct across the boarder to Bolivia). The journey was suppose to take 7 hours but was closer to 10 in total! It was about 2 hours to the boarder of Bolivia, which was a very scenic journey around Lake Titicaca. The boarder was very small, and was so easy compared to memories of the hectic Thai-Cambodia boarder. After we had our passports stamped on both sides, the journey continued for another hour to Copacabana. We were told to get off the bus for 1h30 as we had to change buses, have lunch and explore the town. ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island June 22nd 2015

Hi All, Pick-up from hostel was at 7am, they turned up a little late but still turned up!! They dropped us off at the main pontoon harbor terminal. Here we met our guide and he walked us down to our motorboat to the Uros Floating Islands. It took only 30 mins to get to the floating island and once there, had approximately 1h30 hours with the locals explaining how the islands came about, by tying the reads and roots together once they break free on the lake bottom to create the main base and building upon them layer by layer. We had the opportunity to buy their locally made crafts too. The islands were amazing especially seeing how they have built something out of nothing. We continued on to Taquile Island across the Inca’s sacred lake ... read more

South America June 21st 2015

Hey All, Today we had a good free breakfast at the hotel before heading to the bus station at 0745 to get a bus to Puno, the Bus Left at 8.30am. We just read on the bus, as there was not much to do. We arrived into Puno at 5pm, we got a taxi to our hostel and panicked, as he seemed to be going the wrong way as we had the location on maps on our phones, however it turned out trip advisor is wrong and he took us to the right place. It had no markings on it so we would never have found it on our own. Puno is basically serving as a jumping off point for us to do the floating islands. The area and town is very poor, busy and compact, ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail June 17th 2015

Hello Friends, Family and blogger readers, 17th-20st June Over theses 4 days we embarked on the world famous Inca-Trail, to the capital of the Inca Empire. A total of 44km/27 miles, crossing 3 mountain passes, the highest of which is at an elevation of 4,200m (13,775 ft.). Day 1: Our group of 16 consisted of a family of 7 from Minnesota; a family of 3 from Chicago; a brother and sister from Sydney; and two male police officers from Australia. We were driven from our hotel in Ollantaytambo to Wayllabamba camp, which is at the 82km marker, which indicates the start of the walk. After having our passports stamped and tickets checked we then embarked on our first day of hiking. This first day was an easy 11km walk. We stopped off at a few small ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley June 16th 2015

Hi All, We woke up nice an early to make sure our bags were packed and weighed the right amount, and that all the essentials were in there!! We could have as much as we wanted in our day bag but we knew we would have to lug it around for the whole 5 days coming up!! Our first surprise was the amazing breakfast, it was ‘son gratis’ which means free, it was so good with so many options eggs, cereals, pasta, etc… There were two groups heading out, one was for the Inca trail and the other for the Lares trail. For some reason they mixed up the groups for this first day; as we were all doing the same tour and ending in the same hotel!! (Bad start in my eyes). Our first stop ... read more
