South America » Argentina » Salta » Cafayate July 10th 2015

Hey Bloggers, As it was cold we lay in bed all morning, just reading and using the Internet, we got up to grab the free breakfast though (bread, jam, coffee, juice). For lunch we went to ‘la casa de empanadas’, an empanada restaurant, which had 12 different ones for 80 pesos, they were Buenisimo!! We bumped into one of the girl’s who was working in the Loki hostel in Salta, we chatted for a while and left her as she was heading back to Salta that night. We then walked 3-4 km to the vineyards that were circled on our map from the hostel. We couldn’t find one of them and another didn’t do any wine tastings so that just left one to do: Quara Finca. It was free at least but we had to go ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, We had a chilled day today, it was the 1816 Argentinian Independence day celebrations today so everything in town was closed including most of the wineries. We went into town for lunch and to watch the horse parades. They were pretty impressive all dressed up in the old 1816 outfits, there must have been well over 300 horses all with women, men and children riding them in formation and cantering. We got lunch from one of the food stands at the parade, we got beef and pork sandwiches, and both were amazing. We walked around the shops (well ones open) and looked at all their different arts and crafts; Vick loved all the hand woven baskets and clay pottery. In the hostel we found a new friend, a stray ginger and white ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Cafayate July 8th 2015

Hi Folks, So we got up early this morning as we were leaving Loki hostel in Salta at 8.45am to catch the bus at 0900 as it was 30 mins into town and our coach was at 1030 to Cafayate. We paid our tab bill, which was only about £40 for three nights and all food! We got to town with plenty of time to spare so we got some snacks and water and got to the main bus terminal. It was simple to talk to the driver and show the tickets and soon enough we were on our way. We wanted to stop at Cafayate as it’s well known for wine and goat’s cheese, all my favorites. We arrived in Cafayate about 3pm, we hadn’t booked a hostel but thought we would have a walk ... read more

South America » Argentina July 7th 2015

Hey Everyone, After our lazy day yesterday catching up with blogs, we decided to head into town to explore today. We got up early, had breakfast at the hostel then caught the $3.90 Peso bus into town at 10.00, which was about 30 minutes. Luckily Vick had her GPS maps working so we knew where to get off near the main square. First thing we did was to walk to the bus station to book tickets to Cafayate as it’s cheaper to book at the station than online most of the time!! On the walk back we stopped at a little restaurant for lunch Vick had soup but they had run out of everything else so I waited and got some empanadas in a small place elsewhere. We wandered around shops and the local area, it’s ... read more

Hello Everyone, I woke up cold so climbed down and got in with Neil to warm me up, He headed off to the main room to get internet whilst I had a shower once we got out of bed. We had a chilled day at Loki hostel; got a nice breakfast, wrote blogs, ate good food for lunch, drank beer, sent out couch surfing requests, up loaded photos and did our washing, well put it to be done. We have a place sorted for Santiago with couch surfing (it’s expensive in the city so we are now staying this a young couple and their little boy for 4 nights for free). Currently typing out requests for Buenos Aires, Rio, NYC and possibly Sao Paulo. Love Couch Surf!! We watched the film “Taken 3” in the room ... read more

Hello Everyone, We checked out of Talar Hostel in San Pedro at 9am, and then walked the short distance to the bus station where we had booked our 10.5-hour bus journey to Salta from San Pedro Atacama to Salta (20,000 Chilean /£21 each). We were told that the bus may not run today due to the icy winter weather on top of the Andes, but thankfully all was running on time. We chose the best seats when we booked-up at the front so we could stretch our legs out over the rail. They were also semi-reclining seats again and the bus included a cheese and ham roll for lunch and a biscuit and cup of tea in the afternoon! It took about 3 hours to the Chile-Argentina boarder crossing. This was very straightforward; queue up in ... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama July 4th 2015

Hey People, We woke up about 9am, as clocks have gone forward an hour. We showered then headed into town about 11am, we walked around the dusty little alleys of San Pedro to the market shops, and watched a little of a local football match. We went in the local Church in the main square, that was constructed in 1640’s which is made out of all local materials, including the wall and floor; the ceiling is made out of cactus wood. We then paid to go in the museum that is on the edge of the main square, we thought this was the Museo del Meteorito, but it wasn’t. Slightly disappointed that we couldn’t find this museum but this one was still interesting, tracing the origins of the Atacama people dating back to 12000 BC. We ... read more

Hi Friends, family and bloggers, We are embarking on the Salt flats 3- day tour (all in one blog). Day One. So we woke up nice and warm in our room this morning, the little heater in the center of the room did its job and warmed everyone. We had to be a Thiago Tours office at 1030 to start our tour and meet our fellow companion’s. We had a shower in the morning and there was a free breakfast of toast and cereal, which was nice and unexpected. We were told we would be freezing most of the tour –day and night, so I went to the shop to purchase some gloves for £2 from a local shop. Classy llama ones!!! We finished packing, went to the shop to get snacks for the trip and ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni June 30th 2015

Hi All, As we were leaving Potosi today we decided to have a chilled morning, catching up on Internet, re-packing our bags and things like that. We went to for lunch at a little café we found near the main square; I had an omelet and Vick a pizza slice. Our bus was at 13:30 on the email confirmation we had, so we left Potosi at 12.30 to get to the terminal 30 mins early as normal…this is when things started to go wrong!!! The taxi driver took us to the wrong bus station, after we had worked that out (all in Spanish as no one spoke English), we got a taxi to the right station, (this one Vick panicked because a guy jumped into the passenger seat of the taxi just as we started to ... read more

Hello Friends, Today we started the Silver Mine tour at 9am, after a good breakfast of scrambled eggs and cereal. We had the opportunity to witness working conditions in one of the cooperative silver and zinc mines, the conditions are among the most grueling imaginable. We had plenty of guide books telling travellers not to underestimate the dangers involved in going into the mines and to consider the voyeuristic factor involved in seeing other people’s suffering. It definitely was at our own risks, and there were plenty of dangers with the stability of the mines, which had me terrified during most of the tour. Although we didn’t feel like we were prying on the workers, the miners are proud of their work in such tough conditions and generally happy for visitors to observe their toil. We ... read more
