Geo: 32.8722, -116.418On Saturday we left the motel around9:00 AM and, since we only had a relatively short drive to the village of Pine Valley where we would spend the next two nights, we took the scenic route via the Salton Sea area. We had never been to the Salton Sea before and, having read a little about it, were interested in checking it out. The Sea itself is, at its lowest point, only about 5 feet above the lowest point in North America in Death Valley, California. It is currently fed by several small rivers but has no outflow, thus water is lost only through evaporation resulting in very high saline content. It was originally formed by the Colorado river which at one time flowed through the valley. For thousands of years, the Colorado has flowed ... read more

North America » United States » California » Idyllwild April 6th 2017

Geo: 33.74, -116.718Thursday morning was mostly a travelday as we drove a little over 300 miles from Phoenix to Idyllwild, California and the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. The Monument is part of the San Bernardino National Forest . Idyllwild is very much the touristy, quaint mountain village with lots of shopping and other attractions. No chain motels but quite a few mountain cabins and or inn type lodging was available. The hiking trails that start in or near Idyllwild climb from an elevation of around 6,000 feet into the San Jacinto Wilderness mountains that reach elevations of over 10,800 feet. We arrived in the early afternoon and checked in to our motel, the Idyllwild Bunkhouse, a small well kept motel on the outskirts of the village. To stretch our legs, we hiked ... read more

Geo: 33.494, -111.921We flew into Phoenix, AZ, on a Tuesdayand, after picking up our rental car, drove to the La QuintaInn in North Phoenix where we were able to check in a bit early. Then on to the Gateway Trailhead for the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Northeastern Scottsdale. We really just wanted to stretch our legs and get a taste of what the preserve would be like, so we did a short 3 miles or so on those trails. The trails there, at least those close to the trailhead, were mostly a walk in the desert with lowmountains in the distance. We also were able to pick up a brochure with a map of the trails in the southern section of the preserve. Back at the motel, we checked out the trail map and decided to ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Salt Lake City October 3rd 2016

Geo: 40.7595, -111.888Up Monday morning, we packed up, loaded the car, and drove on to Salt Lake City following US highway 40 until we hit Interstate 80 at Silver Creek. The weather had been off and on overcast and rainy most of the way from Vernal but no frozen stuff until just after getting on I-80. From Silver Creek, the interstate climbs to a pass in the Wasatch Mountains called Parley's Summit. It then descends through an area called Parley's Canyon before entering Salt Lake City proper. The elevation of the pass is 7,120 feet and as we climbed toward the top of the pass, the temperature dropped from the 50's through the 40's, into the low 30's, and the rain turned to a mix of rain, snow, and sleet. Fortunately the roads stayed only wet ... read more

Geo: 40.4557, -109.529On Sunday, we drove north about 125 miles to Dinosaur National Monument which straddles the Utah/Colorado border and stopped at the Quarry Visitor Center on the Utah side. The main attraction at Dinosaur NM is the Quarry Exhibit Hall which is a building built to enclose the side of one of the hills, called the Wall of Bones, where hundreds of dinosaur and other ancient animal bones have been exposed and can be viewed and even touched right there where they were originally deposited 150 million years ago. The rock layer enclosing the fossils is a sandstone and conglomerate bed of alluvial or river bed origin. The dinosaurs and other ancient animals were carried downstream by the ancient river system which eventually entombed their remains. The dinosaur fossil beds (bone beds) were discovered in ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Fruita October 1st 2016

Geo: 39.1589, -108.728After visiting the sanctuary, we drove on to Fruita (pronounced fruit-ahh, not fru-ee-tah) and after checking into our motel drove on to the visitor center for the Colorado National Monument. Colorado National Monument is located in the middle of the western edge of Colorado just south of the shores of the Colorado River as it makes its way west and south from Colorado through six other US and two Mexican states. The visitor center is located about 4 miles from the west entrance to the monument along the Rim Rock Drive, a scenic 23 mile drive through the park. We checked with the ranger at the center as to conditions of the trails and which were recommended. I had picked several that looked promising, and we ended up hiking in two of those areas ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Aspen September 30th 2016

Geo: 39.19, -106.818On Friday, we drove from Grand Lake toFruita, Colorado, by way of Aspen in order to visit the site of the John Denver Sanctuary Memorial Park there. On the way to Aspen, our Tom Tom GPS routed us along Colorado highway 82 over Independence Pass. At the pass, elevation of 12,095 feet, highway 82 reaches the highest elevation of any paved Colorado state highway on a through road. The road is very scenic, but is also very steep, curvy, and only one lane wide in places, thus traveling along it is an experience in and of itself. In Aspen, the memorial park called the John Denver Sanctuary is located in a peaceful nook of Aspen's RioGrande Park along the banks of the Roaring Fork River. Many of thesinger's songs are engraved in large granite ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Grand Lake September 27th 2016

Geo: 40.2522, -105.823After arrival on our first day in GrandLake, we took a short hike to a pretty waterfall, Adams Falls, just to stretch our legs and get a little bit used to the altitude. It wasn't enough to get us acclimated but, at around 8,500 feet, it told us that we definitely were not used to hiking at that level or higher. Doing the hike I particularly wanted to do would not be easy. I had done some research on the available hikes, and the trail to Mt. Ida sounded perfect to me – on paper at least. Starting at an elevation of 10,760 feet, it was about 4.6 miles one way along the continental divide to the summit of Mt Ida at around 12,880 feet. Since the weather forecast for Wednesday, our second day ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Hood River August 22nd 2016

Geo: 45.7056, -121.52After finishing our hikes at the Clarnounit, we drove on to Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge and our hotel for the next two nights, the Westcliff Lodge. The lodge was originally the Vagabond Lodge when I made the reservations but changed its name a few weeks before our arrival. We had gotten an e-mail announcing the name change, but I missed it and Anne, though she remembered the e-mail, couldn't remember the new name. So finding it was a little challenging but after searching for a bit and actually asking for directions, we arrived and checked in. It turned out to be a very nice place with several buildings built right on the banks of the Columbia River with some really pretty views. Our roomwas on a ground floor of one of ... read more

Geo: 44.4683, -119.535Checking out of the motel on Sunday, wedrove back through Redmond and on to the Painted Hills, one of three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We hiked on several short trails of one mile or less through picturesque multicolored hills that apparently contained fossils of various types, though we saw none at this unit. After seeing all we could of the Painted Hills, we drove on to our lodging for the next night, the Fish House Inn and RV Park in the town of Dayville, OR. The Fish House Inn is named more for the decor than any other reason. It was a nice place with all we needed for one night though we had to rush to get dinner that evening. We arrived around 3:30 PM and were told ... read more
