Miner's Needle Loop: Sunday morning we had a good breakfast at the motel, then drove about 30 minutes to the Peralta Trailhead on the southern edge of the Superstition Mts. The Peralta Trailhead is reportedly the most popular in the area around Phoenix and when we arrived at the trailhead around 9:00 AM it certainly looked like it. There were at least 50 marked parking spaces in the lot, and I think we were lucky to get # 49. #50 was taken by the car behind us. And there were several overflow lots below the main lot that were almost full. We were sure we would have wall to wall people sharing our trail, but we were pleasantly surprised at how few people we saw. While we didn’t have it totally to ourselves, we did have ... read more

Bisbee & the Coronado National Memorial: After finishing our hike at City of Rocks State Park, we drove about 3.5 hours to Bisbee, AZ, where we checked into the OK Street Jailhouse. The jailhouse has been transformed into a surprisingly comfortable B & B (though you have to cook your own breakfast). Built in 1804 as the county jail, it was part of the prison system until 1915 when a larger facility was needed. It is believed to have once been owned by John Wayne. In fact, there's a life-size cardboard photo of John Wayne in the corner which took us by surprise every time we looked in that direction! The former drunk tank is now a living room, kitchen, and half bath. Upstairs where the serious offenders were housed is now a large bedroom and ... read more

We flew into El Paso on Wednesday, January 16th, and drove to Deming, NM, where we spent the night. The next morning, we drove about 25 miles north to the City of Rocks State Park where we hiked the Table Mountain Trail and returned to the trailhead by way of a spur trail that took us through the middle of the collection of huge boulders that make up the “city of rocks.” The hike to the top of Table Mountain, which is really more a mesa than a mountain, took us to a neat high point that afforded a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside. We trekked back down the trail to the spur trail that took us through the area of boulders, marveling at how they came to be there in the middle of the ... read more

Our planned hike for Vermont was along the AT to a ski area on nearby Bromley Mountain. However, as usual on this trip, it rained all day on Monday when we had planned to do the hike. Since it was our last day in Vermont, and we had about a 4.5 hour drive on Tuesday to get back to Portland for our flight home on Wednesday, we toughed out a couple of very wet and cold miles on the AT trail to Bromley Mt. Vermont has a trail, called the Long Trail, that goes from the southern border with Massachusetts to the northern border with Canada. The southern half of the Long Trail is shared with the Appalachian Trail until the AT turns east toward New Hampshire. So our hike on the AT in Vermont was ... read more

We spent Friday and Saturday nights in a pretty unique motel in Fairlee, VT, called the Fairlee Motel and Drive-In Movie. It is an old roadside motel with only 12 rooms, but they had been refurbished and were clean and very nicely furnished. The drive-in movie screen is right behind the motel and, when movies are shown, the guests can sit in their room and watch the movie through the picture window overlooking the parking area and the movie screen. Unfortunately for us, movies are not shown after the area schools start, so we didn’t get to see one while there. True to form, it rained pretty much all of Saturday morning when we had planned to hike to Smart’s Mt. near the Dartmouth Skiway outside of Lyme, New Hampshire. Instead, we unfurled umbrellas and hiked ... read more

We arrived in Portland on a Wednesday, and the weather was very nice with highs in the 80’s for our drive to Rangeley, ME, and the Saddleback Inn. Unfortunately, on Thursday, the cold temperatures started, and the rains came in earnest, preventing us from doing any serious hiking. From then on, it seems like it rained every other day, and the temp did not get above 60 degrees for the rest of the trip. On Thursday it rained all day so didn't get to do the planned hike to Saddleback Mt. We did drive to a state park along the lake as well as to the trail head for the hike to Saddleback Mt, but it would have been a very wet slog to the top without much chance of any views with the foggy weather. ... read more

On Wednesday morning, we left the motel around 8:00 AM and drove south into New York state. We checked out one trailhead around Garrison, NY, that went to a viewpoint called Deming Hill but the AT here was overgrown and traversed a marshy area with tons of mosquitoes. After hiking about a half mile fighting the bugs and humidity, we decided to turn around and go to our second choice – Anthony’s Nose. Anthony’s Nose is a rocky outcropping just above the Hudson River overlooking the Bear Mountain Bridge. The AT crosses the Hudson River here along that bridge. We parked at the base of the ridge that the viewpoint is located on and hiked the AT northbound for about a half mile – straight up. You only gain about 500 feet in that half mile ... read more

Tuesday AM we availed ourselves of the complimentary breakfast at the motel and then headed out for our hike on one of the Connecticut sections of the AT. The trailhead for this hike was only about 5 minutes from our motel, so we got a fairly early start this day. Our intent today was to hike the Lion’s Head Trail to the AT and then on to the summit of Bear Mountain, the highest summit (though not the highest point) in CT. The initial Lions Head trail intersected with the AT after only .75 miles and the namesake point of Lion’s Head was only another .25 mile up the AT. This was a steep mile, gaining almost 600 feet with the last bit a very steep rocky hand over hand climb to the top of Lion’s ... read more

Arrived at Bradley International airport in Windsor Locks, CT, on a Saturday, 8/18/18, around 3:15 PM and sat on the airplane for about 40 minutes in a thunder storm that, due to the lightning, kept the ground crew from guiding the plane to the gate. Finally deplaned, picked up our rental car, and drove to Williamstown, MA, home of Williams College, a rather exclusive, expensive, almost ivy league, small college. Checked into our motel, had dinner, and back to a relatively early bedtime. Up on Sunday for a hike to the top of Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts at 3,491 feet. Started at the AT crossing of Notch Rd. in the Mt. Greylock State Reservation and hiked across the summit of Mount Williams on the way to Mt. Greylock’s summit for a hike of ... read more

We left the hotel in Squamish around 9:00 AM and drove to the USA/Canadian border near Lynden, WA. Though different from where we crossed previously, the delay was just about the same. About 40 minutes after arriving at the border, we were able to actually re-enter the US. The planned 5 hour drive took more like six and a half. The drive to Winthrop goes through the North Cascade Mountains along the Cascade Highway and is pretty scenic in its own right. We arrived in Winthrop, a very touristy little town at the confluence of the Chewuch and the Methow Rivers around 3:30 PM and checked into our motel. After getting settled, we walked on a trail that took us over the Methow River on a pedestrian bridge, through the town and crossing a second pedestrian ... read more
