Hello all I wouldn't want anyone to start to get withdrawals symptons if you have to go without my blog for a few days - so I am now trying to catch up on several days without access or the internet or I was too busy living the Ausssie life!!! So you will probably get a few blogs all at once now!!! Having found my way round in Susan and Geoff's lovely modern townhouse in Port Macquarie, explored the town and neighbourhood on foot, and manoevred the car in and out of the garage I was ready for a bit more exploring along the coastal walk. So drove the car to a starting point and walked from one beach to another via several headlands until I got to a lighthouse and another beach stretching for miles ... read more

Gday to all of you. It is supposed to be hot and sunny for me - and it was but today down came the rain in torrents just after I had hung out the washing - had to put itback in the spinner. But enough of domestic chores... last time I blogged I was in Sydney and after a lovely Sunday ferry ride from Double Bay via Watsons Bay ( famous for Doyles fish n chips resto) Angela and I strolled along the Quay in the Harbour, past the Opera House and through the Botanic Gdns. As my Suzanne will remember there are lots of bats hanging in the trees by the coffee shop ( she hates bats!!) and there are also pesky white ibis pecking around everywhere like bloody seagulls at home trying to eat ... read more

Hello all Just when you thought you were havung a rest from me here I am again. It was time to leave my new friends Colleen and Peter so big hugs all round and hope to see them in the UK next year. I had a very good drive from Albany to Perth last Wednesday- an easy 450 km ...and for the first 200 km I probably only saw 10 cars if that... and it is a good road with passing lanes at intervals which is good when you get behind a road trian which is a big truck pulling 2 carriages behind it - they can be alomost 40 m long. A stop at Kojanup to see a very nice exhibition with some aboriginal stories and have a coffee was a good break in the ... read more

Yes tomorrow I leave my new friends Colleen and Peter and the chooks and the sheep and the little blue wrens. It's been a great time here and I would be happy to stay longer but I must move on to my next adventure. Yesterday was sheep shearing day and I would't exactly say I helped but I did stand in the gateway to shoo any escaping sheep back into the fold....and then I stood and watched!!! What hard work it is, and Peter told me all about the professional shearers and how the organise to shear 1000s of sheep. We only had about 15 sheep - and the wool- we ended up with 2 bags full. Thanks, Peter, for showing me how it's done. The sun was shining and sitting on the verandah beckoned but ... read more

Yes there is so much here to see in this area around Albany - I wish I could stay a few more weeks. Yesterday started off with Peter making me poached egg on toast ( eggs from our chooks and he makes the bread) and my kids know what a treat poached eggs are so to have it made for me was great. Then off Colleen and I went to the farmers market- and here it is genuine farmers and producers only.... so it was lovely to potter around and buy a foodie stuff. Next a look around the shops ...spending most of my time ooohing and aahing over little coffee cups in the nice kitchen shops....and of course we have to stop for coffee and cake. Then it was a bit more sightseeing - there ... read more

Here I am in Albany staying with Colleen and Peter. It has been such a wonderful time these last 3 weeks meeting all these lovely people, making new friends. Often when I tell people I meet that I am doing home / hospitality exchange their first reactions are negative ...the usual comment is 'have you ever had any problems - how can you let strangers into your house?' and I have to report that not in 20+ years have I had any negative experiences. There are so many plusses to being with a local family - they know the best places to go that you might never find. You meet their friends , neighbours and family and become part of a social circle and part of the community. And the warmth and kindness and generosityof spirit ... read more

You had part 1 of Trees earlier and now I will be up to date. As I drove from Pemberton to Alabany I drove through miles and miles again of Karri forest and red tingle trees - sometimes I was on proper tarmac road and other times on red gravel... the car is covered in red dust so I really feel like I have been in the bush!!! I got to drive down to Lake Yeagarup and saw the huge inland sand dune in the distance, Gary... but I didn't dare go any further myself in my little Getz car. Some of these trees have climbing stakes pegged into them and the brave ones climb them ... see fotos- but not me this time. Whatif you got up to the top and couldn't get down!!! The ... read more

Hi everyone Have to catch up on a few days now as I haven't had any wifi. So what did I get up to at the weekend - Julie and Gary and Leanne came to join me at Busselton Beach Resort and we had lots of fun. After another drive and look around Margaret River- more wine ,cheese, cakes and chocolate we returned and went swimming in the pool...Having previously thought I might be an axe-murderer Julie now thinks I am just a madwoman - just because I went swimming in the pool... I thought it was warm enough - she thinks I am mad. I think 9 years in Oz has turned her into a wimp!!! And I believe she was once a champion butterfly stroke swimmer. Sorry Julie - haha. Leanne and I did ... read more

Well yes as the title suggests there was a foodie challenge today... and yes I did eat a witchety grub... it was in a nice sauce so I didn't mind it....but it does look a bit horrible. ...but if you think about it no more horrible than winkles and mussels. Out today on a great trip with Bushtucker tours. I was tempted by the brochure which mentioned 40 tastings and since it meant I would not have to drive I hopped on the tour bus this morning. What a lovely lot of people and very friendly driver Bryan who made sure we all had a great time. So we have visited 4 wineries , a brewery, a cheese factory and chocolate maker too. And you know me - I usually just pick wines by the if ... read more

A lovely drive south from Mandurah yesterday with a few little side trips - even managaing to find an Australian National Trust house - Wonnerup- so I could use my UK card here. One of the first settlers here in this area cleared land started a farm and then got speared by an aborigine - but his widow carried on ( as we do !!!) with her 5 children. ...and i think founded a dynasty. A nice little one-teacher schoolhouse had me thinking of times gone by. I was driving through a beautiful forest of Tuart trees (another kind of eucalyptus) the Ludlow National park and the forest floor was covered in white lillies. I was stunned to see so many - and there I am at home with a couple in a pot struggling. But ... read more
