Yes it us raining again! Took another couple of hr walk by Lake Te Anua befire I left this morning and drove straight to Queenstown. Took a couple of coffee stops as I was finding it difficult to concentrate. As I got closer to Queenstown I realised that I was starting to get a migraine. So found a campsite so I could take a nap. Paid my money, pulled on to my pitch then spotted a very low flying plane. I had decided to nap under the flightpath at an international airport. DON'T LAUGH, IT IS NOT FUNNY!! Any way slept for about 3hrs and feeling much better now. Migraine is probably due to all the coffee I have been drinking on the trip. I am addicted to the flat whites they serve, I have not ... read more

I had planned to go to Stewart Island today but weather was wet and windy so I would not have been able to make the most of it. As in the south of the South Island decided to go to most southerly point as I had been to the most northerly point on the North Island. What a contrast! I had to put o my waterproofs as there was horizontal sleet. It was cold enough for me to be wearing gloves. Staying at Te Anau tonight it rained the whole journey but lovely sunshine here. It is very commercial with lots of boat trips and scenic flights. I walked for a couple of hours after I had a bite to eat. The lake is beautiful. I was in two minds as to whether to drive to ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Invercargill December 4th 2012

Just started raining again, but I am in the Scottish sounding Invercargill so I suppose it is quiet apt! Just had a very cheeky Song Thrush come into the van and rummage for crumbs on the floor. Unfortunately, it left a little present just before it flew out! Seems ages since I updated the blog. Enjoyed my time helping out at the Mahoe Reserve, I had been in touch with Sue Jarvis about this and it was liking meeting up with an old friend. Sunday night I stayed at a really quaint site at Geraldine, I had the place all to myself, which was a little spoky! It was a really nice site called The Farmyard aimed at families with young children, had a adventure and a petting zoo. I made a fuss of the donkeys ... read more

1st of December is officially the first day of summer in New Zealand. Was awoken by a very loud siren going off, bit concerned as to what is was to start off but when I asked a local when I heard a similar s iren a couple of weeks ago she said it was to call in fire brigade volunteers. Late getting away from campsite this morning originally planned to find a walk but to be fair it took about 30 mins to get to the information centre in Akaroa so did not get around to doing another walk. Akaroa was settled by the French so all the road names are in French. I spent the afternon on a boat but I forgot to put sunscreen on so my face is a bit red now. Saw ... read more

Had a fanastic drive through Arthur's Pass yesterday from west coast to east coast of the South Island As usual the drive was not for the faint hearted, it included going over a bridge one vehicle wide with a railway line running down the middle, a rock shelter built over the road to prevent vehicles being hit by falling rocks, a waterfall diverted to avoid the road. The road was so steep at one point even with my foot to floor only just managed 35km/hr. Almost forgot road was so high up my ears popped whilst I was driving. I had planned to do a walk at Aurthur's Pass Village but was put off by the fact that local info centre hired out location beaons. Thought I would be out of depth, but asked if there ... read more

Made the most of the fact that I did not have to be packed and away by 10am today. Slept in 'til after 8, had a wander to beach in my pjs and dressing gown. Made tea and toast and read a book in my pjs until about 9.30 decided I really needed to get dressed as not sure that it would have been quite right to spend the whole day in my pjs! Got dressed, did my laundry, fed popcorn to the birds and finally managed to psych myself up for a walk at 12:30 just as I was ready to go it started to rain. So I went to Shanty Town instead a replica of a town during the gold rush. Got to ride steam train and saw a holgraphic threatre show. Finally started ... read more

It had to happen sooner or later!! Just checked emails and there was one from rental company saying I had been caught on camera speeding. Only surprise is that it did not happen sooner, found keeping to low speed limits guite difficult during the 1st couple of wks, much better now. Lets hope I don't get anymore, all speed cameras in New Zealand are hidden; very sneaky. Managed to get to the seal colony at Westport earlier today and then headed south along the west coast. Given up using satnav as distances are so huge she is not needed, occasionally she reminds me to carry straight on for another 20k. Got talking to a guy who has just lost his job working on a dairy farm; he thought it was funny when I said there are ... read more

Had a great walk yesterday just souhth of Bleinheim, walked for about 2 hrs through the grazing land of aworking farm so very different to my previous walks the bush. Very hot abouth 28C. It was quiet all I could hear was the sound of seed pos bursting open in the heat. Then drove through mile up on mile of grapevines. SatNav told me to turn left in 123km which seemed to take forever. Thought I would start counting cars only saw 60 in 100km, and that included the ones that overtook me. Stayed at great site near Murchison last night lovely log fire in the kitchen. Took an walk nr old power station before I left Murchoson, took about an hr. Drove toward Westport and stopped at the longest swing bridge in New Zealand. Not ... read more

Travelled to the South Island today. Checked in early for the ferry in Wellington so mananaged to spend an hour or so walking along the harbour. The ferry terminal is right in the centre of the city and the harbour is full of restaraunts etc. They had a market held in an underground carpark right in the city centre. The ferry journey took about 3hrs. You guys all thought I was brave but not as adventurous as a German couple I met; they were on a cycling/hiking holiday with a 6mth old baby. Completely mad is what I thought!! The ferry terminal in Picton was a bit of a contrast to Wellington, Picton is about the same size as Bardney. Staying at Bleinhiem tonight, completely surrounded by vineyards. Not sure where I am going tomorrow, that ... read more

Managed to get a few walks in yesterday and today. I have started asking at the Information sites for short walks in the area. Yesterday I drove by an erupting volcano (Tongariro) picked up a hitchhiker, I was so worried for her safety when I saw her on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Anyway she was keen on doing the walk I was planning near Whakapapa, so we did it together and had a bite of lunch. It was quite nice to have a bit of company for the day. Stayed at Palmerston North last night and walked along the river for about a mile and walked back through a very large park with a lovely rose garden an aviary and not forgetting the minature railway. Had a great walk later ... read more
