Waiting for an appointment and I genuinely have butterflies in my stomach. I am so excited. Just going through the final checklist in my head. Insurance yes. Visa yes. Flight yes. Currency yes. Meds yes, though not sure how I am to cram it all in hand luggage. Transport to airport yes. First campsite booked yes. Although Kim had a look of panic on her face when I said I would play everything by ear when I got there and I did not plan to book anything else while still in the UK. Cats booked into the cattery, I think they know as they have been very affectionate this weekend. ... read more

Very bumpy flight, managed to get some sleep though. Going through security at LA they had to do a bag search after it went through xray. Then they had to do a swipe on the home made fudge that I had in my hand luggage. All ok though so you will still have your sugar rush at work on Monday! This after I said yes to an awful questions on immigration form; in fact almost all answers were yes! Do you have; Food Plant products Animal products Have you been on a farm? Have you touched livestock? Yes to them all!... read more

Had a great breakfast this morning at restaurant near the campsite. I order scrambled eggs with goats chees on toasted sourdough bread. I perhaps should not have ordered bacon with it, because it was very filling. Managed to finish packing my bag this morning; had to sacrifice my dressing gown in order to fit all my Christmas shopping. The bag is much heavier the when I left the UK; but not overweight as I feared. Last of my New Zealand dollars were spent on a taxi to the airport because I would not have been able to walk to the bus stop. I was told that the flight was running an hr late when I checked in. So time to find a coffee and a quiet corner to read my latest book.... read more

Had a really social day. Took agentle drive along the coast road as I on had about 80km to cover. Pulled over when I saw a nice beach and called across to a lady cleaning her windows to say how nice a view she had and she invited me in for tea. She and her husband are Dutch and moved to New Zealand 30yrs ago. The are very fit retirees, t he were telling me that they cycled from the very north of the North Island to the very south of the South Island and it took them 5wks. They had a gorgeous chocolate brown kitten who is normally a bit skittish with strangers, but as soon as I sat down he climbed on my lap and fell asleep. Stopped of and had a look around ... read more

Had a much more relaxed day today. Stopped at a place called Katikati where they very arty. It is called mural town because of all of the artwork on the buildings. I took a walk out of town along the river on The Bird Walk, which as sculptures of birds. In town the walk along the river has a number of poems carved into boulders along the route. Loads of great artwork in the shops too. I am tempted to buy another piece of art. I have already bought a wood block print of a Pukeko, it was created by artist who lives in the woods with no electricity, so everything he does is truly handmade. I would also like something to remind me of the Tui. The Tui has quite a complex call which means ... read more

I had a very long day yesterday. Caught the 8am ferry from Picton to Wellington. I have been trying to fit in a walk everyday, so when I got to Wellington I drove to Belmont Regional Park to fit in a walk. When I got there I was absolutely knackered so decided to have a nap. When I took my boots off my foot was quite red and swollen so I was a bit worried that the infection from my insect bites had spread. I decided that after my nap I would track down another doctor. When I woke up my foot looked a lot better so took a walk as originally planned. The brochure said the walk would take an hour, but it seemed to take a lot longer!! I had a bite to eat ... read more

Last night I stayed in Pohara, my intention being to drive to Nelson today. Whilst on the beach last night I thought that the coast to the west looked really pretty. So this morning I drove west (sorry that should be east!!) rather than going straight to Nelson. Wow! What a drive. The road went under a natural tunnel through the rock and from then on I was saying "Wow" out loud at every turn in the road for the next 20km. Every turn gave an amazing view of the ocean. The road clung onto the edge of the hill overlooking the sea. The 1st 10km was tarmac but it had been washed away in several places so was fairly hairy to drive on. About 5km into the drive there was no longer any sign of ... read more

Should I be worried about the young men in leiderhosen in the pitch next to me? They also yodel and play the accordion! Last time I blogged I had just got to Queenstown. Felt a bit better the next day. Had a walk around the shops. Queenstown is quite commercial, but it made nice change. Got a few supplies and left about lunchtime and drove for the rest of the day and stayed a Haast. Haast was lovely and sunny. Got speaking to an American couple who tour New Zealand for 3mths every yr on a motorcycle. Once I had a bite to eat I had quick walk and was lucky enough to spot 2 Keas in a tree. I managed to get away bright an early the next morning and went to Fox Glacier, it ... read more
