Europe » Italy » Trentino Alto Adige » Trento May 24th 2009

We woke up with the sun rising over Dolomites. Our hostess had our breakfast ready and her two beautiful kids were running in and out just talking and playing. We took off toward Trento knowing we wanted to find wineries to taste the area wines and cheeses. The first one we came to was the Family Winery of the B&B we stayed at, Mazarado. It was huge and as we expected, very nice. From there we continued on SS12 heading up into the mountains. We quickly found a second winery and wellness hotel. We stopped and had a glass wine and olives. Very tasty, after finishing, we then continued to go up, up, up into the mountains. Kirsten was hoping to find a farm that would have a cheese tasting or some samples. Well that didn’t ... read more

Europe » Italy » Trentino Alto Adige » Trento May 22nd 2009

We had breakfast at the hotel and reviewed our plans for today. We decided to hop on the Autostrada and make good time going to Verona. We drove through the Po Valley and it was flat and lots of fields of stuff growing. No Roman ruins that I could see. We made it to Verona before lunch parked the car and headed off to the arena. Verona’s Arena is the third largest and is the only one that is still being used today. It was very impressive. We walked through the tunnels where slaves and gladiators once stood, sat in the stands and once we conquered the lions, we were ready for lunch. I was hungry, so we set of to the Piazza Erbe (is named after the Herb market that was held there for over ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 22nd 2009

Due to Giro De Itali “Italy’s Tour De France” was ending in the town of Riggamore we were up and on the road by 7 AM. Oh bye the way Lance Armstrong is riding in the Giro De Italy so Tour de France is looking good Lori!!!!!!!!. Spectators were already lining the road for the bike races. We drove pretty much up and over the mountain to the Autostrada and headed to Florence. We were in Florence by 10:30 AM and trying to find our way to the Centro, missed our turn, werer lost and the phone rang. It was Hedi and Bill they were in Karlsruhe with Sven and Eva. I ask them to call back in 30 minutes, were trying to find parking spot. Ok, Kirsten found the Centro and she found a parking ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre May 20th 2009

We wake up at 8 AM and we’re on the trail by 8:30 AM. We packed a few items food water and camera. As we left Corniglia we stopped and checked on the car. It was still there and enjoying the rest. We continued onto Vernazza. The route took an immediate uphill, oh yea. The estimated hiking time is 2hours, the day had not heated up and we were early enough that not many people were walking. If you ever walk the Cinque Terra do it early in the morning much easier when you don’t have to share the path. It took every bit of the two hours to get to Vernazza. We stopped for 30 minutes and had a snack. The last stretch laid ahead of us and I was so happy. The walk between ... read more

Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre May 20th 2009

We had a very enjoyable breakfast at La Marguerite, eating homemade jam, onion foccicta and breakfast rolls. It was delightful and we’ll always remember La Marguerite. While we were sitting there we decided to head up into the mountains as we made our way toward the Cinque Terra. The drive was very scenic and we stopped at Sestri Levante and purchased bread and sweet rolls for lunch. They opened our bottle of wine and we drove to the water and sat on the coast and had lunch. After lunch we continued on to the Cinque Terra and drove into Corniglia. This is the center town of the five towns “Cinque Terra”, we decided that we would stay in the center and walk the first half one day and the second half the next. We dropped the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Alba May 20th 2009

It’s 7 AM I’m sitting on the end of the bed, the doors are open and I’m looking out over the valley of Piedmont. Birds are singing, church bells are ringing and slight breeze is blowing. I’m writing this to ensure that I never forget this moment of closeness to god and everything around me. We ate breakfast at the B&B, and while sitting we observed an older picture. After studying we decided it represented the 7 deadly sins. We weren’t sure but we thought it was. We started where we left off on the Strada Romantica, as we visited station number nine we saw the same picture of the 7 people in different situations. Yes they represented the 7 deadly sins. It is a fresco painted at the chapel St Roco. We completed the last ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont May 20th 2009

After we had a hearty breakfast and planned out our day, we were checking out and Kirsten picked up a different map of the area. Well, those well made plans went out the window as we headed down the road. The map was of the Strada Romantica, this has 11 stopping points through the Piedmont area too numerous to mention. However there was one that deserves to be mention, stop 5, “On the road between the Alps and Hills”. We took the wrong turn and after 5K we came to a dead end. There was a beautiful chapel and small restaurant. After viewing the chapel, we were drawn to the restaurant by voices of laughter and singing. We entered the restaurant and saw 6 older men we all sitting around a table singing and laughing. We ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Alba May 20th 2009

Kirsten has mastered the clutch. We were coming up through a castle gate at an incline of 90 degrees and she was in second gear and was starting to stall and she immediately switched into first gear without any hesitation and successfully brought the Audi into parking area. We walked around the market in Asti this morning and found a nice restaurant; we had a cappuccino and sweet roll. Pierre was our server and of course we thought of our friend Pierre a manager of Olive Garden in Orlando. From Asti we drove south toward Alba we stopped at a small town of Govone. We took a few pictures of the sites and locals and then continued onto Alba. Ok, let me just tell you Alba was one busy city, it took us 1 hour to ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Alba May 15th 2009

We’re still struggling with the clutch. We only stalled 4 times today, one was on the boarder of Switzerland and Italy. Yeah, right when the Poliza was watching. It has rained all day, we drove around Lago Maggorio. We stopped at Orto and viewed a park (at the very tippy top of the mountain) that has 20 chapels for St Francis of Assisi. It was very impressive all built around 1650 -1700. We then drove to Novara, had a cup of coffee during a down pour, we visited the Doumo the Romanesque and Baroque architecture is the best I’ve ever seen. (LOL), As we were leaving Novara we started heading toward Genoa, Kirsten decided in the middle of a roundabout that she remembered the book Carl gave us. It recommended Asti as a stopping point. So ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich May 14th 2009

After leaving Atlanta, we were servered a delcious meal on the plane, with plenty of wine. Kirsten received her annverisary cards. She was very happy. We watched the movie Defiance, good movie but way to long. We finally fell alseep and landed 4 hours later. Once in the airport, e made our way to the car rental counter and picked up our car. They didn't have the super compact we ordered so they upgraded us to an Audi A4 at no cost, SWEET. We were off, well as soon as Kirsten got comfortable with the clutch. We drove to Luzern where we stopped and had a sandwich and sweet roll. We then headed south around the Lake that Luzern sits on. It was very beautiful, overcast but still great views. We continued south toward the Goddard ... read more
