The alarm goes off its 5 AM. Kirsten and I are taking Mandy and the Kids to the Bahnhof (train Station)in the next town over to catch the 6:20 AM train to Munich. Everyone is loaded into the car and we’re on our way by 5:30. I’m impressed, our drive was 30 minutes as we pulled into the parking let Mandy and the kids piled out of the car and were on the train in about 5 minutes. Kirsten and I then took a leisurely drive back to Berchtesgaden. We stopped at the little bakery shop next to the house to get breakfast, as we were getting out of the car Kirsten was smiling and getting all excited to purchase fresh brochens, deli meats and cheeses. This is the little bakery within walking distance to the ... read more

The flight was long and uncomfortable. Kirsten and I talked and enjoyed each other until we passed out from being tried and uncomfortable. Whose idea was this to go to Germany in the high season? We departed the plane along with the rest of the cattle and were herded into customs. We must have looked pretty tried because they just waved us through. We got to the rental car counter, I asked and explained that I had made reservations to Munich and then changed it Frankfurt and then last night changed it again to Stuttgart. Guess what they couldn’t find it, go figure. So the rental car person quickly called and found out that it was rebooked at Avis instead of Europcar. We walked to the next counter and Maria was smiling and ready to help ... read more

North America » United States » Georgia » Atlanta July 2nd 2011

We woke up around 5 AM, Bea arrived close to 6 we loaded up and were on our way to the airport. We booked ourselves on the 7:30 morning flight to Atlanta knowing that would be plenty of time and the flights were open and it would be easy to get on. We would be in Atlanta early but it’s always better to be ahead of the rush. As always, Kirsten and I have analyzed the flights trying to pick the correct time to leave to increase our chances to get first class seats using buddy passes going over to Germany. Going to Atlanta doesn’t really matter it’s a short flight, but when you’re going over the big pond First Class is nice. Well that work came to a screeching halt when we got to the ... read more

It’s early, Bea and I walked to the baker. She had heard about it and wanted to chat with the lady behind the counter. I think she just wanted to check out all the great pastries. I was right; I reminded her we were on a mission. We needed butter, rolls and eggs. Especially the eggs, whenever we travel to Europe we always get a boiled egg for breakfast. I don’t know why it’s special but it is. The fog seems to be getting thicker as we approached the secret path…. Woooo, Bea wasn’t that impressed until this nice looking German man came through and she had to squeeze by. We get to the bakery and we walk in and the lady looks at me then looks at Bea, her right eye brow pops up and ... read more

I’m up and it’s 6 AM. The sun is just peeking over the mountains. Kirsten is still asleep so I run for the bathroom and get cleaned up. As I’m finished Kirsten is up and ready to go to the bakery. Off we go out the door and WOOO it’s foggy. We feel our way to the bakery and I’m thinking we’re the only fools out here. I was wrong; as we approach the door you can see 6 or more inside just talking and getting their breakfast. Kirsten waves to the lady behind the counter; they exchange their cute German greetings. I’m standing there thinking…. can I just get an Egg McMuffin. When we get back everyone is up and moving around, Bea is all ready for her brotchen. The table was set and we ... read more

Well we finally had a late morning. Everyone slept in and got up late, Swen and Eva brought breakfast and it was delicious. Thanks Swen and Eva. Ok now with 7 folks in the same room and everyone either speaking German and or English it was quite over whelming. I think at one point there was 6 conversations going on at one time. We finally decided that we wanted to go to the Salt Mines of Berchtesgaden. They’ve been mining salt here before Morton knew how to spell salt. My sister Ann has even been here before me. So we all went except for Bill and Hedy they stayed behind. We drove over to the salt mine it was just down the road. However, we had some miscommunications and we proceeded to the wrong village. Well ... read more

It’s Friday morning and I thought we were going to sleep in, oh no….. we’re up and heading to the bakery. Today was supposed to be an easy day because we’re waiting or Bea, Swen and Eva. It’s not starting off like an easy day. We get to the bakery, Kirsten and her sprecken the Deutche and I standing there Ga-Gaing over the pastries. As we were leaving, Kirsten says we’re coming back before everyone arrives to purchase cake and pastries. We’re going to have cake and coffee when everyone arrives, WOO HOO. After breakfast Kirsten says let’s go to Berchtesgaden today is Market day. Cool, this is when all the merchants come to town and sell their stuff. You remember the chicken man and the guy that sells the roasted pork and all the stuff ... read more

Hey, wake up. Didn’t you say you want to go with me to the bakery? Huh, oh yea, I did mention that last night. Yea! I told you I was going first thing. Ok, Ok, I’m getting up. We left the house it was 7 AM and there is a heavy fog hanging over everything. It’s spooky out here, oh please just follow me and don’t lose sight of me. I was on Kirsten like bees on honey. We wound through the neighborhood and within 5 minutes we were standing in front of the bakery. You could smell the sweetness in the air. You don’t need to eat anything, just breathe it in. We go in and the lady behind the counter welcomes Kirsten like they went to school together. Kirsten turns and asks me “what ... read more

I woke up and rolled over. Kirsten was already up and gone, the lady who rented us the house told Kirsten that the baker was just a quick walk from the house. By the time I was dressed Kirsten was coming thought the door smiling and carrying a large bag. I’ve got breakfast she says as she rushes into the kitchen. We all set down and had fresh brotchens, with cheese, meats and jams. Just like if we were staying in a Zimmer. We even had eggs, Kirsten made soft boiled eggs and they were great. Since we’d been going fast for the previous days we all decided to take it easy today. So after breakfast we all piled into the car and headed to the Zentrum “downtown area” of Berchtesgaden. Kirsten quickly spotted the ‘I’ ... read more

We’re clean and packed in 30 minutes. We rush down stairs and have a quick breakfast didn’t get to even finish my coffee. We’re out the hotel and heading toward the Autobahn and I say why are in such a hurry? Kirsten says were not in a hurry we just have the GOGo.
