In the summer I will be travelling around Europe for 6 weeks, this is a blog for my friends and family to see what I'm up to. I will try and update it weekly in Europe depending on internet connection.

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » Barcelona August 9th 2011

This blog will cover the first week of our time in Spain, in Barcelona and Benicarlo. We arrived in Barcelona after managing somehow to wake up at 3.30. As we arrived so early in the day we had a whole day to do things. First we walked up Las Ramblas (the main pedestrian street) and bought smoothies and empanadas in La Boqueria, it is one of my favourite places in Barcelona, it´s just a big market but they all make the food look really good. Then we spent the afternoon on the beach, the sand is quite dirty and you have to be very careful about thieves, but it's nice to have a beach so close to a city. That evening we had a stroll around and an ice cream in the port. The next day ... read more

Europe » Italy » Emilia-Romagna » Rimini August 2nd 2011

This part of the trip was one of my favourites. Rimini is a party town but full of Germans, a bit like their version of Magaluf or somewhere British young people go. Our hostel called the Jammin party hostel lived up to it's name. When we arrived we went down to the beach and just sat looking out to the sea as this was our first time at a beach resort. That night we decided to go to bed early, the German girls in our room were going out and their male friends were there. A while after they left the boys burst back into the room and demanded that Ally kiss them!!! She didn´t luckily and since then we have tried to stay away from groups of German boys. The next day we hired sun ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice July 29th 2011

I finally have a computer, Well all this happened over a week ago now so the details aren't very clear. The train journey to Milan was so amazing we went through the Alps then past the Italian lakes, everytime I tried to get a picture a tree would get in the way! It took ages to get to the hostel as Italians don't really prioritise fast customer service, Our hostel in Milan was odd it felt more like a room in an Indians man's house. For dinner we had pizza in the pizza place downstairs, it was just as good as any Bottelino's pizza. Afterwards I had a lemon granita which is lemon juice, ice and sugar all crushed up, I love having these when I go to Sicily. The next day we went to the ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Geneva July 24th 2011

Me and Ally arrived in Geneva via Lyon after a long train journey through some picturesque countryside. We decided to go straight to the main attraction of the city: The Jet De L'eau, which is in Lake Geneva and is an impressive jet of water that reaches 140ft. However, it wasn't switched on due to the bad weather that seemed to be following us about. We had a look in the tourist shops and I was shocked out how pricey everything was though I did purchase a Swiss Army knife which has come in pretty handy with controlling Ally. A sandwhich was about 10 francs (~£8!!!) We had cheap noodles for dinner, and even they were 10x the cost of British cheap noodles! In the evening we watched the film 300 in the common room and ... read more

Europe » France » Lorraine » Nancy July 22nd 2011

I apologise for my lack of blogging recently, but the internet situation is pretty bad. It's either too expensive for my budget or I've only had 15 minutes! I'll upload the photos when I get home. We arrived in Nancy and took a long bus ride to our hotel, which was situated in a lovely industrial estate that wasn't actually in Nancy. As we didn't have a kitchen we went and ate a croque monsieur in a small café in a supermarket. The next day we travelled into town and we went shopping as it was raining. I bought a bit too much, mostly clothes, and then we went to the botanical garden and followed the tourist train because it was slow enough for us to get a free tour :D In the evening we watched ... read more

Europe July 18th 2011

Sorry it's been a while the Internet situation has been pretty bad, the last blogs weren't very detailed because it's hard to write everything in 15 minutes. On the 14th we arrived in Liege in Belgium, the station looked like the set of a futuristic space movie. Ally used her french for the first time to buy a bus ticket and I just went 'what she said'. Our hostel was really nice though it did feel like a prison as the walls and ceilings were concrete blocks. We went exploring and found ourselves in the main square but it started raining so we took refuge in new look, where I bought warmer clothes. That evening we decided on pizza for dinner but when we got to the kitchen we realized that there were no ovens, microwaved ... read more

Europe » Germany July 13th 2011

We got up early and said goodbye to Amsterdam, 2 and a half hours later we were in Cologne, Germany. The change in the weather hit us, it's just like England, cold and rainy! Our hostel is above a McDonalds and is a 45 minute walk to the centre. But it is our first taste of a proper hostel. We are sharing our room with 6 others. We had a wander around our area and when we got back we got chatting to people from, Mexico, Spain, Sweden and Korea. The next day we walked to the Lindt chocolate museum which is next to the Rhine and got free chocolate and saw it all being made. Then tried to find a place that sold currywurst, it took a long time eventually we found it and though ... read more

Europe » Netherlands July 11th 2011

This trip got off to a good start, as we were checking in a T mobile flash mob advert started to be filmed in the airport. Also thanks to Ally's dad we got fast tracked through security. After a quick flight we landed, our first task was to get to the centre of Amsterdam. Getting lost seems to be a main theme for us at the moment but we always get there in the end. We also realised just how heavy backbacks are, so operation use up as much stuff as possible to make it weigh less has begun! We got to our hostel, it's in a really nice posh area. Though our room consists of a bunk bed and a desk there isn't enough room to swing a cat! But we are on the top ... read more
