Europe » Italy » Campania » Caserta June 26th 2011

Caserta was one of those place always on your tick list that you never manage to get to. You go past it but never have time to stop or you are on the way to somewhere else. However before going on holiday having watched Monty Dons Gardens of Italy we decided that the box this year had to be ticked. As we were passing on our way further south to Amalfi and again on our way home to Rome it seemed the ideal opportunity to stop off and enjoy what was described as the Versailles of Italy. Built in the 18th Century it looked a cross between Versailles, Buckingham Palace and Chatsworth and had impressive gardens mainly set out in the parkland style. The gardens comprised of 2 miles of formal avenues, fountains, cascades, bedding and ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome June 1st 2011

Ostia Antica is one of those rare places on the outskirts of a city that no-one knows about. Ostia was the port of ancient Rome on a large and sprawling site. Silting of the river Tiber ended the role and function of the harbour. The ruins are beautifully preserved with a main street of over a mile long. Hours can be spent wandering from ruin to ruin, amongst the houses, the warehouses, the grocery shops and the taverns. On the day we visited the place was quiet with few visitors. A real suprise and although Pompeii is on a grander scale , Ostia Antica has a charm that Pompeii lacks. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Mount Vesuvius May 25th 2011

Vesuvius sits there like a sleeping giant or dragon waiting to erupt and belch out fire way above the Bay of Naples and the city itself. A malignant neighbour that you both worry about but need. We drove up to the base of the volcano passing buses on their way down full of tourists who had made their way to the top and were now on the return journey. Many people had been encouraged to move off the volcano since the last eruption and had left empty shells of houses. Other remaining families still eeked a living from the land or from running restaurants catering for the tourists who flocked to see the volcano. Half way up there was a car park with a small charge to park and a number of tacky outlets selling anything ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei May 24th 2011

This blog covers three days , one at Sorrento where we met sister in law Sandra, Jill who I used to work with at the Jobcentre in Clay Cross and two friends who were cruising from Palma to Sorrento, from Sorrento to Rome, from Rome to Barcelona and from Barcelona back to Palma. We drove in to the town over what can only be described as the most frightening roads in the country. It took some considerable time to travel between Amalfi and Sorrento via small mountain towns, the roads hairpinning all the way between one town and the next. Fast travel seemed impossible . When we arrived we parked close to the harbour in what seemed like the most expensive car parking we had ever used. It cost 20 euros for a couple of hours. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Paestum May 23rd 2011

Paestum - the best kept secret in Italy. 3 Greek temples set in acres of wild grasses, wild geraniums and inhabited by lizards. Fabulously quiet with few visitors apart from the odd school trip. The whole site had an air of the 1960's when few tourists ventured to the area. It was hard to believe just how isolated the place felt. No hoards of tourists or children just peace and quiet to experience a complex of greek buildings. Sometimes I think it would be better to keep quiet about such a place and keep it for myself. Tourists would spoil it. Our visit was on one of those days when the sun blazed down. We started by visiting the aree di sosta at the end of the road which served as a car park for the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Amalfi May 22nd 2011

What a fabulous place to wake up in the morning. The sounds of the sea, the small boats plying their trade on the water and the sun twinkling like silver on the sea. Lemons hanging from the trees like christmas decorations on the christmas tree. Lemon granitas refreshing in the hot sultry weather. Amalfi town small but perfectly formed. A fabulous sea front, gelato counters and young Italians strutting their stuff . Felt a little like the song about the girls watching the boys watching the girls go by. The weather was mixed a touch of fog in the morning but bright sunshine in the afternoon. Woke up most mornings listening to the birds in the climbing plants which surrounded our small house which overlooked the bay. What could be better - a view of the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 4th 2011

Morning broke gently over Venice, the mist rolling in over the lagoon whilst we ate breakfast , bacon and eggs, full English, continental hams and cheeses, fruit and coffee. What a view - you couldnt imagine one better. As the sun rose over the horizon it began to burn off the haze and with it the tourists arrived on boats, trains and in cars. Our first port of call for the day was to the Academia. We had bought tickets on the internet before we left home and started out early for an 8.15 opening time. Wandering down the streets we stumbled upon Harrys Bar which turned out to be a small insignificant doorway into an equally unimpressive space. Green is a colour you dont see much of in Venice nor do you see trees but ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Walloon Brabant » Waterloo November 1st 2010

We felt pretty Abba'd out as we sang Waterloo over and over again our visit to Waterloo. This is a second attempt at putting this blog on. I put it on way back in October 2011 but managed tonight to delete it as I added photographs to the blog. What a mess as I have no way of really remembering what happened on that day. Parking was pretty easy as we were in the car and managed to find plenty of empty spaces in and around the memorial to the Battle of Waterloo. We paid our money and walked on to the site. From what I can remember there was a restaurant cafe on site but it was not particularly good and we decided to give it a miss. I cannot remember how much it cost ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona June 6th 2010

We left Montfort with a heavy heart as we had enjoyed a relaxed week there in pleasant company. We had our last meal at La Peche Mallet and it was indeed fine again. We worried that our car would act up again and that perhaps we should head home early. We decided though not to do this as we had pre-booked tickets for the MotoGP race at Barcelona. We planned to stop half way at Perpignan the former capital of the kingdom of Majorca. We had a certain symphathy with the Catalans, part French, part Spanish with a language and culture of their own much like the Welsh. We had intended to stay at a Campanile just off the motorway and spend the afternoon sightseeing the Palais de Rois de Majorque. Having read up a lot ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Sarlat-la-Caneda June 5th 2010

The day started off well. Breakfast as usual was served by Steve and we sat around the big table with today a Mexican family. Not much conversation was to be had as they spoke only Spanish and we had none so sign language, gestures and smiles were the only language we had in common. We had planned to visit a chateau locally but the day went rapidly downhill when we went to start the car. Nothing - Silence - it wouldnt start. No problem we thought. BMW would come to our rescue. We had their extended warranty cover with roadside assistance and France wouldnt be a problem. How wrong can you be? Their glossy brochure showed a brand new BMW liveried with Assistance written all over it. They boasted that would send a fully trained mechanic ... read more
