Sometimes you find yourself with a bit of time on your hands and are never quite sure what to do with it. Too far to go to France. By the time you drive 5 hours to the Tunnel and then to Calais the first day had disappeared and only two are left before the same 5 hour journey home. It is at this time if the weather permits that a short break in this country seems the only sensible option. The problem usually is where to go. Too far and the time is wasted - too close and you dont feel as if you have been away. We have a list of places to visit - The Lake District - the last time I went it poured with rain and memories of the area are not ... read more

There were two days left before we left for home and we had packed our bags in readiness for going home. We had left enough clothes out to last us the last few days. We decided to visit two places today – Perugia and LakeTrasimino. Perugia was rather uncharacteristic for a town in Umbria. It does have an historic centre but it is well hidden amongst the urban sprawl. It is easy to miss on your way to somewhere else. The town itself is quite vibrant due to the university. Students are everywhere. We had a drink on the Corso Vannucci a busy noisy square full of people. It is most definitely a people watching square and we enjoyed a bit of peace before the storm. Storm clouds were gathering and the sound of thunder claps ... read more

In our last must do, most important and most urgent visit there can be no better place to choose than Assisi following in the steps of St Francis. I had thought that it might a tacky place full of nuns and priests on pilgrimage and others coming for the sightseeing. Millions do attend the basilica as an act of faith but many like us for the views across the valley and the frescoes in the chapels. Parking is excellent. I guess because bus loads come in that they need good parking. It isn’t far to walk up the gates in to the town. There is a long street reaching from the town gates to the square in front of the basilica. The streets are lined with shops, churches and cafes. The street does though feel very ... read more

Night comes quickly to this part of Italy. Perhaps its something to do with the lack of light from houses in the towns or even the clear skies. Lights in the distance look like flyflies twinkling in the distance flitting from tree to tree. Thunder storms too feel more intense with the claps of thunder louder and the lightening looking like someone has switched a light on and then off returning us to darkness again for a few moments. It’s lovely to listen to the sound of the rain pounding on the terracotta roof tiles. By morning the storm had passed and we were left with a warm and sunny day in the pipeline. We ate breakfast watching the tiny green lizards which were basking in the warmth of the sun. Today was another urgent and ... read more

May is a lovely time to visit Italy, the sun is shining and the spring flowers coming out. Umbertide didnt prove a pleasant place. There was a medieval heart to the small town although this wasnt easy to find. The town had been obliterated by bombs during the 2nd World War. We sat over breakfast thinking about what we wanted to do during the week. Places to see and things to do were divided into what was important and urgent, what was important but not urgent and the rest which feel into the not urgent and not important. The last things would be visited the second week. Siena was our first destination and was our most urgent and most important destination. Parking was easy below the town but it left us a long walk uphill to the ... read more

This was only the second time I had flown - last time to the USA but this time the much shorter trip from Birmingham to Rome 2 and a half hours in the company of BMI Baby. We had booked our seats earlier paying extra for extra leg room and for a window set. It is so much easier travelling in the car than having to put up with all the hassle of an early drive to the airport, car parking and then waiting round for the flight. It's hard to find things to do for two hours, a bit of breakfast, a cup of coffee and customs and that's it. We can always guarentee tht we will be stopped and this was no exception to the rule as they confiscated my brand new shampoo and ... read more

one more day - woke up downhearted - in fact even more than yesterday. On our last leg home. We had given a little thought of what to do today and had come up with a visit to Jumieges an abbey founded in 654 by Saint Philibert. We had out chateauxed and out castled ourselves and had felt that the peace, quiet and tranquillity of Jumieges could be the antidote to going home. Abbeys have a certain quiet mystery and at home visits had been made to Tintern, Valle Crucis and Rievaulx all robbed out by Henry VIII. Jumieges too had been laid waste but this time not by a king but by the peasants of the French Revolution. We drove on quiet backroads with the sat nav guiding us away from the usual motorways. It ... read more

The M56, the M1, the M15 and the M6 what can you say about them - long, uninteresting and a means to an end. A way of getting from one place to another and that is about it. Traffic jams and the biggest car park you can imagine on the M25 at times. The A6 and A7 sound much nicer especially when you give them their french names L'Autoroute du Soleil (the route to the sun), L'Autoroute du Sud (to the south) and finally L'Autoroute du Maritime (to the sea). We left the sun on the Alps and headed north for a date with our friends in Dinan and a very large TV linked to the Astra D satellite in order to watch the England match. We hoped that we would arrive in time for the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Aosta Valley » Fenis June 8th 2006

We were reaching the end of our week in the south east of France and we had decided that there were two more trips we wanted to make before we left for northern France and home. One was to Annecy to spend a day wandering aimlessly around the town and the other to Northern Italy to the Aosta valley and Fenis Castle. A picture perfect castle. The journey there was pretty impressive in the mountains but this part of Northern Italy is rather an urban and industrial sprawl. Not the prettiest part of the country it has to be said. The castle though is something else. Pure medieval magic with watchtowers, inner staircases a keep and battlements. A quiet place on the day we went which meant we had time to meader and wander taking in ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Zermatt June 6th 2006

Breakfasted in Sion – felt rough – a bad nights sleep coughing and spluttering. My nose could give Rudolf a run for his money. Why is it you always feel far worse when you are away from home. Hankies in pocket, dosed up on Lemsip and Paracetamol went down for breakfast before leaving the French speaking side of Switzerland for Zermatt in the German speaking part. Zermatt is a famous skiing and mountaineering destination with chair lifts and cable cars climbing to the high mountains. It is also the terminus of the station from where the spectacular rack and pinion Gornergratbahn rises high above the town on its journey into the mountains. It is the highest open air railway in Europe. Everything in Switzerland runs like clockwork. The car park runs perfectly with perfectly parked cars ... read more
