Way back in 1963 my mum brought home a postcard showing the Spanish Steps in Rome and since that time I have always wanted to visit Rome. What frenetic city - a city which seems to have been formed by a thousand jigsaws being thrown up in the air and the contents all jumbled up when they hit the ground again. One piece of advice Sion would give would be to buy a Roma Pass for use whilst in the city. It costs around 25 euros and can be used over three days on the MetroRo and for entrance into a large number of sites in the city. The first two sites are free and the remainder charged at half price which add up to quite a saving. Our first visit was to the Baths of ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Cognac September 30th 2011

Thursday 15th – Cognac – France always seems a country of big skies. Everywhere you look whether it’s at night or during the day the sky seems to go on forever. Today we decided to spend the day at Cognac which was an interesting town with a big history of Cognac production. Sions tip free parking on the Hennessey Quai by the river. The river area felt much more interesting than the one at Saintes. We had made the decision to visit a cognac distillery and chose Hennessey. We picked the English tour in the afternoon and were taken across the river in a barge to the warehouses on the other side of the river. The visit included seeing the barrels being made, the distilling process and the ageing of the cognac. Not a drink either ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Rochefort September 21st 2011

Wednesday 14th September – Rochefort, Royan and Talmont. A bit of change in the weather again today with the sun shining. Headed for Rochefort to visit the Corderie Royale and the reconstruction of the 18th century ship of La Fayette – the Hermione. Good parking outside the Corderie which was free between 12 and 2pm. 14 euros each to go into both the rope factory and to see the ship. Certainly worth a visit. Nice atmosphere to Rochefort. Our next stop was Royan a seaside town just a little way down the coast with views across the Gironde estuary. Free parking on the seafront and loads of beach cafes with an excellent choice of menus. Our crepes tasted so much better with the sun on our backs and a view of the sea in front of ... read more

Oh when the Saintes go marching in – Tuesday 13th September Well when I started to first read blogs I decided that I wouldn’t fall into the trap of writing song titles for headings but just look at me – nearly every one seems to ending up as some kind of pun or song title. It's strange how easy it is to fall into the trap although I am not as good at it as some of the bloggers. The weather is still pretty unseasonal for France and we cannot believe our bad luck. The lack of the good weather has made us think very much about televisions in motor homes, satellite dishes to get UK TV and solar panels. I have always said I think it expensive to put a satellite on the motorhome but ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » La Rochelle September 19th 2011

Monday 12th Roaming en Rey, the Three towers , kite surfers Cannot believe just how awful the weather has turned out to be. Have been to France before in September and it has always felt like Summer but this time it has the feel of Autumn with leaves falling off the trees and today drizzle and blustery rain. Unusual weather that did make us wonder if we getting the tail end of the hurricane which was hitting Britain. Felt lost without the internet to find out what was happening in the world. The plan for the day was to go to La Rochelle. This is a place I have always wanted to visit and Glenn and I had decided last year on our way back from the Catalunya MotoGP that we would have a few days ... read more

Europe » France » Poitou-Charentes » Angouleme September 19th 2011

Saturday – Angouleme, stuck in car parks and new gite for the week. Woke early Saturday morning and did our last packing and said our goodbyes to our Dutch hosts before heading on our journey to Angouleme. The countryside changed dramatically with less trees, more rolling countryside and vineyards as far as the eye could see. A very different landscape to the rest of the Dordogne. Noticed loads of motorhomes en route but no British so the plan of speaking to British motorhomers had gone out the window. Most motorhomers seemed to be French with the odd Dutch mingled in between. Stopped at Angouleme to break the journey as back aching sitting in the car seat. We were not too impressed with the city – first of all had an interesting conversation in the Post Office ... read more

Well readers you know how it is – you get to the end of a week at one place and are starting to struggle to find things to do and see. Well that’s what it was like this morning. Woke up after having a bad night tossing and turning and aching after my fall yesterday. Large bruise come up on ankle which has puffed up beautifully. Aching rear end which could have been worse if my padding had not been so good. Walking and sitting difficult but not going to spoil our holiday. A friend on Facebook did say that if I had our motorhome I wouldn’t fall in it but not entirely sure that is true. Weather started off not good again with low mist. However over breakfast happened to look at the brochure that ... read more

Europe » France » Aquitaine » Périgueux September 8th 2011

Tuesday decided to visit Perigueux a city that held out horrors for us as the last time we visited we took in a rather poorly BMW to the local BMW garage. They seemed incapable of sorting the problem out and we came away rather annoyed with them. We hoped that this visit would prove rather better. Parking should have been easy as we found a good site close to the river however it was full and had to resort to the underground car park. Rode round for ages trying to find a spot and eventually when we did find one a nice frenchman came the wrong way down the lane and knicked it. Sion was not happy with him at all. The city was quite compact, we had lunch in a nice little italian bistro up ... read more

Arrived in France using the Channel tunnel after a five hour drive from North Wales we found ourselves in a Campanile in Rouen , Not the best of locations – in fact wished we had the motorhome already. Hotel was extremely noisy as the Tour de France aka Nogent Cycling Club arrived with two vans and a back up car and proceeded to service their bikes in the car parks. The noise from the adjacent road never stopped all night. Interesting meal of sausage which I later found out comprised of tripe!!!! Woke up next morning to heavy fog and headed south. Thankyou to nice French man who kindly used his credit card to buy us diesel when we found the garage only used French credit cards and of course we didn’t have one. As we ... read more
