Tuesday decided to visit Perigueux a city that held out horrors for us as the last time we visited we took in a rather poorly BMW to the local BMW garage. They seemed incapable of sorting the problem out and we came away rather annoyed with them. We hoped that this visit would prove rather better. Parking should have been easy as we found a good site close to the river however it was full and had to resort to the underground car park. Rode round for ages trying to find a spot and eventually when we did find one a nice frenchman came the wrong way down the lane and knicked it. Sion was not happy with him at all. The city was quite compact, we had lunch in a nice little italian bistro up a side street. After which Roman Vesunna in the olde cite. This comprised of the foundations of a roman villa housed in a purpose built modern glass museum. There was also a tower and the remnants of the Arena. Afterwards we decided to visit the Military Museum that is reputed to be the largest in France. From the outside it looked quite small but Dr Who would have been impressed by the Tardis like quality of the building. A large array of militaria badly displayed and in need of conservation and a bit of TLC. Worth a visit though as it is an incredible collection worthy of a decent setting.
Didnt think much of the cathedral , interesting from the outside but dark and dingy inside.
Did a bit of aire spotting and found the local one which was set close to the river, newly built near to the cities flats. A good site within easy walking distance of the cathedral.
Dinner that night was spent in the company of the Dutch guests who were also staying at Domaine Le Bost. An interesting evening despite us having no knowledge of Dutch helped by the fact that they spoke perfect English.
Wednesday was a total washout as the weather has turned rainy. We felt that we had travelled over 800 miles to catch the sun and it had outrun us. We decided to go to Chalus to visit the Castle where Richard the Lionheart was killed. A bit of a disappointment as very little remained except a tower and a bit of a later abbey.
Rain again today but managed to get out to St Jean de Cole a very picturesque village, two streets with honey coloured houses and blue shutters, a mill, a river, a chateau unfortunately not open to the public and a church. Nice to walk around and to have lunch people watching something I really enjoy doing.
Finished the day off at Puyguilhem Chateau a typically Renaissance chateau totally empty and similar to most of the ones you can see in the Loire Valley. Once you have seen one or two you have seen the lot! . Not a lot there and I managed to fall down the slippery wet wooden steps in the garden .............and I wasnt even drunk!.
Am now sitting here typing this blog in total agony but the glass of rose wine is helping.
