Today was the first day of our real motorhoming experience. We had booked Suzy in to have her tracker system and alarm fitted at a company in Warrington. We woke early and took to the road. Why is it that the world and his dog seem to be on the road the same time as we are? It seemed that all the parents in the world were taking their children to school and the remaining drivers were making their way to work in Liverpool or Manchester. Surely there must be a time in this country of ours when the roads are empty? Wishful thinking !!! The journey seemed to take a long time; firstly we came up against the overhead gantries telling us that we should drop our speed to 60 mph, followed by a request ... read more

A whole week has gone by and finally I am working part time. The decision has been made to try to get up early, do something and make the most of the extra days without work. A walk to the swimming baths, 50 lengths and a walk back on two days. A trip to the local garden centre to buy vegetable seeds ready to plant up for the summer. The car received its much needed wash before its trip to the garage for new wheel bearings and to have its handbrake cable sorted. Life is much more pleasant now with more time on our hands and more importantly Spring seems on its way. The mornings are pleasant, the sun shining, gardens full of the colours of Spring; the yellow opening buds on the forsythia, daffodils waving ... read more

I haven't written a blog for a week or so and there seems as if there has been nothing to write about. We have lost a whole selection of photographs taken in the beautiful cities of York and Durham, some from our visit to Portsmouth and a few from the pretty Rhug Chapel, near Corwen and Portmeirion - home of the The Prisoner. I can recommend both York and Durham, both being pretty cities. York with its Shambles and wonderful Gothic cathedral and Durham with its cathedral. There is so much to do in both locations and with the need to retake photographs we will have to visit again. Portsmouth even on a grey windy day was an interesting place to visit for a weekend. The roman remains of Portchester Castle, the Spinaker Tower and the naval ... read more

Sometimes it is easy to overlook the area around which you live. Take it for granted even. We travel all round the world and yet what is just round the corner from us is strange and sometimes unknown. The Clwydian Hills which surround the vale of Clwyd being a case in point. Less high than Snowdon, less rugged but yet just as majestic in their own way. We walk locally sometimes just round the block- a flat 3/4 hour walk with views to die for of the hills brooding in the weak winter sun. Lanes full of brambles, holly, ivy and beneath them the green and black spotted leaves of the Cuckoo Pint just springing to life. Lambs frisking in the fields, snuggling up to their mothers. The waggling of their tails echoed in the shaking ... read more

Our capital city is down South. Exactly the same as in England where the capital is far away from a huge proportion of the population. Cardiff always feels even now remote. The north feels less served with the wheels of industry and government in the 21st Century. It takes longer to travel by road from the north to the south. The journey pleasant but long either through the mountains or out into England and back. The train journeys fare no better. A drive of at least 45 minutes to the nearest station and then a three hour train trip to Cardiff Central. The cost prohibitive unless the passenger is lucky enough to access the Over 55 Club deals which run at some times in the year. From this part of North Wales the cities of Chester ... read more

What can you say about Chirk Castle? Set in the pretty countryside near to the town of Chirk in the Ceiriog valley it is the classic heavily built squat Marcher style castle Built in the 13th century it lies low in the landscape and is pretty imposing. It is though a homely castle with a lived in feel. This is explained by the fact that although the house is owned and maintained by the National Trust it is still lived in by the "family". This shows through the furniture and fittings. The castle is approached via a long drive through the quintessential English or Welsh landscaped park. Oaks, Beeches, Chestnut and native trees fill the parkland. It is though a long walk from the main gate to the castle and a car is useful to make ... read more

Are you looking for somewhere picture postcard perfect to visit . Look no further than the pretty Stokesay Castle near to Church Stretton in Shropshire . Described as the finest English castle of its kind its hard to disagree with that statement . Stokesay is set in the rolling Shropshire countryside and it looks charming. They call this part of the world Little Switzerland . Not the best of places for a motorhome as the lane leading to the castle is relatively narrow and very muddy in the rain. Parking is ample but is on the grass which could make it difficult to drive off if muddy. Another purchase yesterday was a pack of bright yellow plastic treads which are put on the grass to help move a motorhome if it becomes muddy and stuck. The ... read more

And now to something different . We had visited a few castles and felt like something with a twist to it. "How about a Spitfire or a Vulcan or a Hurricane?" Himself said. The biggest problem was distance as we didnt want to go too far and needed a day trip to satisfy our desire for airplanes. Google came to the rescue and we found what we were looking for at the RAF Museum at Cosford in Shropshire. Not to far to travel we set off setting our sat nav to one of the two postcodes given. The first postcode TF denoted the Telford area and the other one WV Wolverhampton. Arriving at the TF postcode we found ourselves in a cul de sac on a local estate without any sign of the airfield nor the museum ... read more

Although not adventures round the world sometimes it is right to look at what we have close at hand . It seems we get obsessed with travelling to far off lands without looking at what is just round the corner. Gap years here and there , long distance travel becoming the norm. In our twenties you were lucky to get a holiday in this country . Now it seems everyone must have a gap year and they overlook some of the interesting and beautiful things here. Give us the good weather and we can give as good as we get . Over the winter months the opportunity does come around to look at the lay of the land and make the decision to stop wandering far afield and visit what is on the doorstep. There are ... read more

North Wales is both blessed and cursed by its string of castles stretching from Harlech in the west to Ewloe and Flint in the east. It's said that you only need to travel 20 miles between one castle and the next. We decided to put the theory to the test starting in the East with the ruined castles of Ewloe, Denbigh and Flint before moving to the much larger Rhuddlan Castle near Rhyl. There are two styles of castle of which Ewloe and Caergwrle fall into the earlier category. They were built in the 12th century by Llewellyn ap Gruffydd as a defence against the English. Ewloe castle is set in Wepre Park. The park and open land rambles for some miles following the river which makes a pleasant place to walk when the weather is ... read more
