Aigues Mortes is a jewel in the Petite Camargue. Less touristy than Carcassone usually missed by the tourists which is a shame because it is such an interesting place. Totally enclosed by medieval walls it along which you can walk. Founded in 1240 to provide direct access to the Mediterranean it is an area of marsh, sand, sea and salt. The city is heavily fortified and entered via La Tour Carbonniere an ancient watchtower which defended access to the city. Lovers of history and castles should visit . The city was founded by King Louis IX and fortified by Philip the Bold and Philip the Fair . After parking and there is loads of it under the walls the first thing you see is the Tour de Constance a great hulk of a building. There is ... read more

Halfway through the week - where has the week gone to? Why is it when you are young the summer holidays seem to last a lifetime but when you get older time seems to fly? The hoopoe seems elusive. This morning I thought I saw one strutting his stuff in the garden but I couldnt be sure. By the time I looked properly for him he had flown away. In the end we decided to head off south in the search of pink flamingos, black bulls and white horses of the Camargue. Left after breakfast in the direction of the beautiful but touristy city of Carcassonne. With its well maintained medieval complex of walls it looks fascinating from a distance. It has been repaired in the past but this has been done tastefully and the new ... read more

Sundays are lazy days for us. After driving for two days we always look forward to rising and eating late and spend the day just looking around the house and gardens. Our investigations began by looking at the swimming pool attached to our property. We had been assured it was nice and I looked forward to using it during the fortnight as it was still hot enough to swim. It was empty of water but instead full of leaves and mud. The owners assured me that it had only just broken down and would be repaired shortly however it didnt take a genius to work out it had been out of order for some time. I held out no hope of it being repaired whilst we were there. The gardens though were pretty full of lavender ... read more

September arrived and it was time again to board the train for France. Our plan this trip was to spend two weeks in a gite near to the Camargue. Not an area that I had been to before so it left us with a huge shopping list of things to do and places to see. It was too far to drive straight down to our accomodation so on leaving the train we headed in the direction of Troyes - a city I had never seen before and one I felt was worth a visit. We arrived late afternoon and stayed at a Kyriad hotel on the outskirts of the city. It wasnt too far to drive in and we parked up on a convenient car park within walking distance of the main sights. A clean and ... read more

Our last trip and in fact our farewell to Italy came as headed for Colonnata. Not quite culture but definitely it was in the broadest sense because ofits proximity to Carrera and the marble quarries which produced the materials for Italys sculptors. Large rocks were strewn along the roadside as it wound its way up the hill. Not beautiful place, in fact the scarred landscape was quite ugly in parts. Shops lined the roadsides selling marble products ranging from full scale large sculptures the type of which you would struggle to get on a plane to tiny perfectly formed owls. We bought Ozzie to join another marble owl purchased years before. Now he wouldn’t be so lonely with Ozzie to join him. For lunch we headed to the small town of Lerici close to La Spezia ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Lucca June 19th 2009

Yesterday we needed the brolly to shelter us from the rain. Today it was needed to provide some welcome shade from the sweltering sun. Lucca is a graceful city set within its own walls. We had intended to walk the walls but there was little shade from the sun and we soon gave up heading for the Duomo San Michele in Foro. We were disappointed to find all the guides had gone for lunch and left the church closed. I did wonder if God had a siesta too. As we needed some shade we walked through the narrow streets to the Piazza Antiteatro a square surrounded by a ramshackle assortment of shops and cafes built on the foundations of the Roman ampitheatre. My last climb of the day, on my own was to the top of ... read more

Spring in Italy - what does it conjure up? Warm weather, sunshine, light showers and wild flowers everywhere. What did we get today - heavy rain as the Heavens opened. Rain falling like stair rods splashing in the deep puddles. There is a welsh saying about heavy rain - it sounds like old ladies with their sticks and this summed up the noise of the rain falling. Thunder claps filled the air and forks of lightening lightened up the sky. We knew that this part of the Garfagnana was dominated by hills and lush vegetation - none of which we saw due to the thick mist which enveloped everywhere. Barga was described as a pretty hilltop village. We saw very little of it as we ran from the car park to the small restaurant on the ... read more

Our second visit of the week was to Florence. We both had been before but as always there is more to see if you return to a city. We parked on the Piazalla Michelangelo above the city - an excellent place to park with plenty of room and a fantastic view over the cityscape - the Duomo roof, the Ponte Vecchio, the path and steps down to the river. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the car park to the banks of the Arno - joggers making their way to work, shopkeepers opened up all their shops. We crossed the Ponte Vecchio an interesting medieval bridge with goldsmiths shops selling their wares along the bridge. We sat in the campo in front of the Palazzio Vecchio a fortress like town hall sandwiched between medieval ... read more

One of our last visits of our holiday were to a castle, a deserted town on a Sunday afternoon and to see modern sculptures in a town square. Colle Di Val d’Elsa is a quiet little place a bit off the beaten track for visitors. As it was a late Sunday afternoon the town was exceptionally quiet. In the streets we saw weatherbeaten grandfathers smoking or playing cards, grey haired grandmothers knitting or crocheting and children and toddlers playing in the streets. A scene that must have been prevalent in England in the 19th century but lost now. If there was a downside to Colle it was that it was impossible to get food on a Sunday. All restaurants seemed closed and even if we found one that looked vaguely open there seemed no-one interested in ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Pisa May 18th 2009

There are few sights that please the eye when looking from an airplane window than Venice and its lagoons and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We stayed near the small town of Collodi made famous through the adventures of Pinocchio writing by Carlo Collodi. Our home for the next two weeks was a small farmhouse high above the town reached by a long, narrow, winded and rutted limestone grey road. The views from the house were spectacular over woods, the valley and up to the village set high in the hillside. A walk that we undertook one quiet Sunday morning. In the large gardens spring flowers grew, butterflies and moths flew from plant to plant and bees buzzed. The weather was good with non stop sunshine - always a bonus on holiday. Our first planned trip ... read more
