Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Philip Island March 29th 2014

Hi blog followers. Yesterday was another great day. Both weather wise and event wise. First up we headed to the Phillip Island GP Circuit for a tour of the circuit, timers box, pit lane, hot lap car and the "winners Podium". A great tour as you get to see things not normally available to the general public. Then it was up to Cowes (main town on Phillip Island) for fish and chips for lunch just sitting on the grass in the sun overlooking the bay. Perfect. Just before night fall we then headed to the Penguin Sanctuary for a VIP tour of the Little Penguin Parade. Again, another tour well worth the money as you get to spend time in the "sky tower" with the National Parks officers helping to count the penguins coming ashore and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Philip Island March 28th 2014

Hi all. We are on Phillip Island now and will be here for 5 or 6 days as there are quite a few things we want to see and do. We started off by doing our usual familiarisation trip including Nobbies Headland and then headed to Wonthaggi to check out the Historical State Coal Mine and do a mine tour. What a great experience just to get an idea how hard it was back in the early 1900's working in a coal mine. Yesterday we visited the Heritage Farm, the chocolate factory (yum) and then did the Seal Rocks Cruise in the afternoon. All great experiences. Especially Seal Rocks. It's a hard life being a Seal. Given the Island is reasonably flat, it has given us a chance to get the pushbikes down and go for ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Foster March 25th 2014

Hi blog followers. Yesterday we headed off on the short trip from Sale to Forster via the coast road, calling in for a quick look at places like Port Albert, Port Welshpool and Toora on the way. As usual, we arrived early, set up camp and headed out to explore the local township and surrounding area. After a quick familiarisation of Forster, we headed for Agnes Falls and the Toora Wind Farm. Both were pretty spectacular in their own right and glad we made the effort. On the way back we stumbled across a great place to free camp at Franklin River Reserve. Very nice indeed and a must stop for the future. Today we decided to spend the full day exploring Wilsons Promontory including places like Yanakie and the camp ground, Tidal River and the ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Sale March 22nd 2014

Hi blog followers. We are now at Sale, Victoria and spent yesterday exploring around Sale. First up we headed for Maffra (just North) and were lucky enough to have the Vintage car show and museum open on the day. It was great to see the history of cars from the very beginning to modern day. It was a bonus to see Peter Brocks cars from his early days. See Photos. From there we did the triangle from Sale to Paradise Beach/Golden Beach (on the 90 Mile Beach) to Seaspray and then back to Sale. It was great to see a storm building over the beach and get some photos. On the way back to Sale we stopped off at the historic swing bridge which is Australia's oldest and largest swing bridge still in operation. Today we ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Bairnsdale March 19th 2014

Well our exploring of the Bairnsdale area was well worth it yesterday. First up we headed for Buchan and the Buchan Caves and reserve. I must say they have done an excellent job setting the area up including an excellent camping area right beside the caves. Very nice indeed and cause for a possible re-visit and stay in the future. The caves themselves are excellent and one of the best we have seen around the world. Very much unspoiled and they go to a lot of trouble to keep them this way. See photos. On the return trip we stopped off at Bruthen and the "Bullant Brewery" for lunch and to sample a couple of their local ales. An excellent choice it was. Mmmmmm. After Bruthen we headed for the Nicholson River Winery to sample some ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Bairnsdale March 18th 2014

Yesterday we moved to Bairnsdale and after setting up and doing the mundane things like cleaning and grocery shopping we set out in the afternoon to explore the town and surrounding area. Eagle Point was the first stop for a quick look and then onto Paynesville and Wattyl Point. I must say, there was a huge contrast of scenery. One minute we were in open sheep country and then the sleepy little lake and fishing area of Eagle Point and then onto Paynesville which I would call millionaires row. I.e. Just about every house has a boat of some sort with the majority I would have to guess to be well over $100k each and then all the newish/large houses. Etc. It definitely looks like the boom area. Heading down to Wattyl Point was then another ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Lakes Entrance March 17th 2014

We are now in Lakes Entrance, but only staying a day or so as it appears to be too commercialised for our liking. Not that it isn't nice here, but we would rather the small towns that are more personal. The van parks here are very small and the sites are on top of each other and the noise from the road is a bit much. Not a good choice of parks for us, but we had to take what we could get as they seem to be very busy here. All 8 or 9 parks in town are almost full:( We won't be moving far however, just over to Bairnsdale (40km approx.) as we have been told of a very nice park there we can stay at. If it is OK, we will spend a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mallacoota March 14th 2014

Today we crossed the border into Victoria and have now set up camp in Mallacoota. (On the coast 20 odd kms from Genoa). A very nice little holiday and fishing town that I just happened to pick off the map:) Mallacoota is only a small town, but has "four" van parks. We are staying at the A'wangralea Caravan Park, which is a small but very nice and friendly spot right beside the shopping area. Not like the Foreshore Holiday Park which is huge and would populate one or two kms of the town foreshore. We much prefer ours:) On our first day of exploring, we visited the tourist areas and beaches etc. on the south of the town. I must say, they have done a lot of work to set up excellent walk and bike paths ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Eden March 14th 2014

Hi blog followers. Today I have done two blogs as a catch up again. This one is from Eden on the south coast of NSW and our last stop before we cross over into Victoria. We have visited Eden once before when we had our bus/motorhome, but then the weather was terrible and we had nothing but heavy rain and therefore we had not seen Eden in the greatest light. I must say it was much better this time and very enjoyable. We did the usual thing and arrived in the van park early and set up camp (only takes us a few minutes now that we are seasoned caravaners) and then headed out to explore the town and surrounding area. The Killer Whale museum was excellent and it is unbelievable to read how the Killer ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Merimbula March 11th 2014

OK. Sorry but this is the second blog for today just to catch up. As you may have guessed, we are now in Merimbula and have just come back from a fishing trip. We didn't catch a lot, but I caught the biggest and that is what counts:) It will be eaten for dinner tonight. At first glance, Merimbula appears to be another nice town and has a couple of very nice clubs and the Sapphire Valley park we are in is also very nice, along with the people that run it. They have free fresh pancakes with Strawberry jam and tea and coffee Monday to Thursday between 10:00 and 11:00 and a free sausage sizzle for dinner on Fridays which is a nice touch. We intend to explore more of the town this afternoon and ... read more
