North America » United States » Louisiana » New Orleans June 17th 2007

Greetings from New Orleans, Louisiana! Less than 48 hours from our mission travel to Liberia in West Africa, I headed down to New Orleans with Halef. We flew into Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi, within 40 minutes driving from the New Orleans city center, and stayed over Hilton Riverside in the French Quarter. We spent most of our Saturday in the French Quarter, checking out the St. Louis cathedral (the oldest, continuous operating cathedral in North America), St. Louis cemetery number One where Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau was buried, and Café du Monde for its famous beignet. It was a fun time, as usual, knowing that the city will thrive after the devastating Hurricane Katrina two years ago. We closed out the night with some Mardi Gras celebration, as everyday is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We flew out ... read more

Africa » Liberia June 14th 2007

All, Logan and Adrienne have invited me for an eventful church mission to Liberia in West Africa. The long journey included several layovers in Washington, D.C. (USA), Brussels (Belgium), and Dafar (Senegal) before finally arriving in Capital of Monrovia, Liberia. After spending two days in a barb-wired compound in Liberia’s Baptist Church, we continued on to the village of Balama, through series of muddy dirt roads. Balama consists of five smaller villages, and we had great time learning from each other. Approximately two hundred kids living in a poor condition, and our presence were valued as a life-time gift from the above. It really humbles you. Logan mentioned that he wasn’t particularly enjoying cold shower, but hey, we can’t have everything here. But I am glad to have such opportunity to visit a West African nation. ... read more

Hey all - This time, I’m heading down into Central America with Keith and Carla, to attend Jackie and David’s wedding. Many of Jackie’s relatives are from Guatemala, and she wanted to honor her Guatemalan family by having a wedding ceremonial in her native country (although she was born and raised in the States). Thus, a lot of friends were getting together in Guatemala for the aforementioned event. We started off in Guatemala City, and proceeded to towns of Antigua and Panajachel. There were many beautiful landscape sightings along the way, dominated by many volcanoes. It was both my and Carla’s first time for seeing an active volcano, so we were very excited. Quaint colonial towns, friendly locals, and traveling with good friends contributed into an excellent relaxing vacation. That’s it for now, until next time. ... read more

North America » United States » Texas » Dallas May 20th 2007

Greetings from Dallas! Grant was graduating from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas with a Business Administrative degree, so it was a Groher reunion time once again. This was the second time I hung out with the Grohers (after our first meeting in Redland, California), and they always welcomed me. We managed to attend Grant’s commencement over the SMU campus, so I had a chance to get acquainted with SMU Mustangs. The subsequent celebration over the French Marketplace was enjoyable, notably for its Mojitos. After this week, Grant is planning on moving to Houston, Texas to start with his new job, dealing with Texas oil industries. Good luck for Grant, and I am signing off for now. -Cy ... read more

Oceania » French Polynesia » Tahiti May 13th 2007

Hey all, This time Rebecca and her new husband Daniel had invited me to tag along to Tahiti in the French Polynesian. From what I've heard, it is in the middle of the Pacific - this is my first time visiting the famous ocean. We started out in Los Angeles, then landed in Tahitian capital Papeete, then ended up for a couple of days in famous Bora bora. Although I've seen the Caribbean turquois water, nothing can be compared with Tahiti's water - it's a paradise on earth. We had a wonderful time, and saw many beautiful scenery. Signing off for now, -Cy ... read more

Hey all, Robyn was hosting me to come along with her for a week trip to Chicago. The Windy City wasn't bad at all, in fact, we managed to do some typical tourism activities, such as eating Chicago famous deep dish pizza and climbing up the John Hancock Observatory Deck. Robyn is a very good host, she introduced me to a lot of new friends, and everybody seems to enjoying my presence. I can't wait to join Robyn again later this year to visit upper Michigan. Till next time, -Cy... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico January 23rd 2007

Hey all, my first time in the Caribbean is definitely a rewarding one. Starting off in the capital of Puerto Rico, Halef and I ventured the narrow street of Viejo San Juan to check out the typical touristy stuff, such as El Morro and San Cristobál fort, both are protected by the UNESCO. Our visit happened to be the best time of the year according to sanjuaneros, due to its biggest celebration of the year of Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, a drinking festival comparable to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, I’ve heard. Then continuing on to the Spanish Virgin Island of Culebra, a 17 miles off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. Now this was a relaxing one, as we spent most of our time on tropical beaches across the island. Quite a fancy ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Vail January 12th 2007

Hey, what's up all. This time I’m with Jon, who is going to a ski trip in Beaver Creek, Colorado. As you’ve heard, Denver was hit by three major snow storms in the past three weeks, leaving Denver (and most of Colorado) with a thick blanket of this white and cold stuff called snow. Frankly, growing up in Iowa then moved to the Deep South, I’m ready for the snow moment like this for a while. So without a hesitation, I pack my bag and head out to the Rockies to have some fun. We fly directly from ATL to Vail airport, which is about ten miles from Beaver Creek, Colorado, where we have a ski cabin reserved for us. On the second day, we go out for a skiing event, where we manage to check ... read more

North America » United States » California January 1st 2007

Hey all, Logan invited me to join him and his family in Redlands, California - a suburb of Los Angeles, if you want to be politically correct. I was so excited on snowbirding idea to California, having the festive Christmas holiday by seeing palm trees swaying. Ah, that's a typical Californian dream. We spent most of our visit around and about the Groher residence, enjoying our companions. Our Christmas spirit was high. I was thrilled to attend the Christmas dinner, and to check out many Christmas ornamentations. Whiew. I was well behaved during my stay - no chirping in the middle of the night, no flying around the room, and no going to bathroom everywhere. We managed to visit the Getty Center in City of Los Angeles vicinity, where a lot of French antiques and furnitures ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Cancun December 21st 2006

This time, I'm traveling with Insun and her husband to Cancun, Mexico. This is my first time seeing the Gulf of Mexico, and it feels more authentic by seeing it directly from Mexico! So I get acquinted with Insun before we left the States, and she made me a backpack, complete with a mini sombrero for my Mexican adventure. Now I'm ready. Well, a layover in Miami is inevitable on this trip, so I waited patiently at the airport before finally boarding to Cancun in the Yucatan Peninsula, almost directly south from Atlanta. White sand beach, turquois water and warm weather. What else can you ask for? We stay at a resort here, complete with mini golf course and private beach. We all have fun in Cancun for a couple of days. Signing off for now. ... read more
