What a day! We started off from our (very chilly) camp on the Zambezi river early this morning through Zambia’s smallest national park. We were treated to a great show from giraffes, elephants, some wart hogs, s wildebeest, water buffalo and, of course, impala. There are no big cats in this park so the animals were quite relaxed. At the end of this drive, which was basically in a mini van taxi, we got out and got to walk up to Zambia’s only white rhino population. We got about 20 meters away and were able to take pictures of the group which included a 2 week old calf. From there, we went to the Elephant Cafe, an elephant sanctuary, for lunch. We saw hippos sunning themselves on the far bank. We got to feed peanuts to ... read more

We had a lovely final dinner with all of the guides last night. We have to say the the good at Senalala was great the whole time. After what was for me a restless sleep, we got up at 5:30 and our ride picked us up for the 3 hour drive to Nelspruit airport. On the way out of the reserve we were treated to more game sightings including a big bull elephant, and old Cape buffalo who couldn’t keep up with the herd anymore, and a giraffe in the distance. And more impala. We also were fortunate to see 3 female lions stalking a herd of zebras and a wildebeest. Fortunately we didn’t see an attack or kill - but it was fascinating to see the herd behave in a protective way. The drive through ... read more

After we got back to camp at 4:00 we were a bit too wired to sleep much so we sort of dozed until the alarm went off at 5:30. We headed out for the morning game drive when it was still dark. We headed back towards where the lion was but he was gone. We did see a large elephant though just waking up. We headed out in search of wild dogs that had been spotted in one area but no luck. We did see some kudu and a few more impala. There was a call on the radio about two lionesses so we headed that way at high speed. It was sort of like you’d see in the livings - charging down twisty paths in a speeding Jeep dust flying. We passed some zebra, really ... read more

Our guide was determined to show us a big cat so at 2:00 am he heard two of them roaring. He dashed out in the Jeep with the camp manager and they tracked one down not too far from camp. They woke us up and we, along with the other couple here, jumped in the other Jeep and raced out of camp. It was quite exciting to race down the dark, dirt road in pursuit of a lion in the middle of the night. We got there and it was a young male who wasn’t too fussed by our being there. He was busy trying to find the other male that he’d been calling. He got curious about us and came right up to our Jeep - maybe 5 meters away. Then he got startled and ... read more

So today was our first full day in Africa and it went somewhat as expected. We got up early and went on a pre-dawn game drive out into Kruger. We didn’t have much luck though as we only saw one lone giraffe on top of a termite mound, some small antelope and, you guessed it, impala. It was a particularly cool day, cloudy and overcast. Even though we didn’t see many animals, it was lovely to be out on the savanna driving in the open air Jeep. It made us both be present- no wifi or other distractions. We stopped for coffee at a site where the former landowner, once he learned he had cancer, set up a campsite that overlooked his land. He spent the last bit of his life there enjoying the natural area. ... read more

After a pretty uneventful red eye (Note: the food on South African Airlines was outstanding), we landed in Johannesburg, changed planes and found ourselves at the Heodspruit airport which was very homey for an airport. More like a log cabin than what you’d traditionally think of. But the staff was very efficient and helpful and we were on our way with our driver within 10 minutes of landing. On our drive to the camp, our drivers kept an eye out for wild life and we were fortunate to see on the 45 minute drive to our camp giraffes, elephants, zebra, mongoose, eagles and impala (referred to by our driver as “McDonalds” because they’re everywhere and everyone eats them. Arrived at the camp in a bit of a daze. Camp is a simplified term for it as ... read more

On our way! Only about 1/2 hour behind schedule. Incredibly hectic morning trying to get out despite getting up before 5:00. Left Samantha with a huge to do list.....sorry, Samantha! Took the red eye to Frankfurt and both of got a bit of sleep so we felt okay after landing. Decided to head out into the city as we had a 8 hour layover. Took the train to the old section of town and ended up in this quaint, very German square. There was lots going on there - two weddings, school trips, musicians, mimes. We wandered around a bit until we found a cafe on the river where we had a German lunch - schnitzel, sausages, potato salad....and, of course, beer. Next we took a leisurely cruise down the river for an hour and a ... read more

We're in the final days of preparation before we head out and I think we're overthinking the whole thing. And we keep flip-flopping on what to pack....and what bags to bring....and shoes? Is 3 pairs too many? Don is thinking 4 so I'm feeling a bit virtuous with 3. And I think I can get down to 4 pairs of glasses..... We leave on Thursday so our next post will be en route - just wanted to kick of this new series before we go!... read more

After 3 relatively uneventful flights, we're home at last. :-) I say relatively uneventful because I did learn some things - never transfer flights in Vietnam. Its really an odd experience. They had us sit in a corner and wait until the staff could come to us rather than go to them. Nobody would tell us what was going on and no one smiled other than one of the China Airlines officials. I also learned that flying with Athena requires medication - both for her (she gets so horribly anxious its amazing) and for me to deal with it! :-) I've posted some pictures with the former blogs that I copied from Athena. After I have my camera fixed, I'll see if I can get mine posted too. :-) Its wonderful to be home back with ... read more

The overnight traing from Chaing Mai to Bangkok last night was reallky quite luxurious - we didn't have to provide our own toilet paper or anything! We did drink all of the Thai wine that we had purchased, several beers, a liter of vodka and some rum.....And all of that before the night club (Yes - the train had a night club car!) opened at 9:00 p.m. We then went and danced - and Athena made new French friends. :-) We all slept relatively well - it was a much nicer train really. :-) Although squat toilets on a moving train make life very interesting. We got to Bangkok about 7:00 a.m. this morning to find our rooms weren't ready yet. No surprise there. So several of us went out to the weekend market and to ... read more
