Day 1

So today was our first full day in Africa and it went somewhat as expected.

We got up early and went on a pre-dawn game drive out into Kruger. We didn’t have much luck though as we only saw one lone giraffe on top of a termite mound, some small antelope and, you guessed it, impala.

It was a particularly cool day, cloudy and overcast. Even though we didn’t see many animals, it was lovely to be out on the savanna driving in the open air Jeep. It made us both be present- no wifi or other distractions. We stopped for coffee at a site where the former landowner, once he learned he had cancer, set up a campsite that overlooked his land. He spent the last bit of his life there enjoying the natural area.

This led us to ask questions. We learned that where we’re at is actually privately owned. It’s adjacent to the federal Kruger park but private. All of the fences have been removed so animals can move freely through the entire area

After the game drive we came back to the resort for a lovely breakfast. Then Don and I, bring us, plugged in and did some work for a bit. At the reset we saw more hornbills (like zazu from lion king), small monkeys and more warthog and impala.

After lunch we headed out for our next game drive. It was much more productive. We immediately saw elephants followed by mongoose, zebra, rhinos, a jackel, a hyena, a white backed vulture. It was a lovely day which followed a lovely evening of s nice dinner, wine and an early bedtime!

Elephant
We drove right up to this elephant and startled him. This was after he settled down a bit and crossed the road but still wasn’t happy with us.

We tracked these guys for almost an hour before finding them right before dark.
