Since we sorted out the laundry situation (is there a pun in that?), we were comfortable heading out for the day. After breakfast in the hotel lounge (same thing every day - scrambled eggs, hash browns, chicken sausage, and baked beans), we hopped the tube to the Tower of London. We walked the whole upper perimeter going up and down narrow spiral staircases in many of the external towers. We read about the murdered princes and other famous prisoners. Of course, there was a lot about Anne Bolelyn, Jane Grey and Catherine Howard. One thing that surprised me, though, was that the last execution there was in 1942 - a German spy in WWII. They make a big deal about the ravens but to me, they look like the noisy crows we get in the yard. ... read more

Now that I'm better rested my spelling and ability to make coherent sentences is higher so I'll try this again! We did another 10K of walking yesterday so my tiredness is definitely earned! Yesterday the weather report indicated that we had the lowest chance of rain of all the days we are here so we decided to make it our HoHo (Hop on/Hop off) bus tour day so we could sit in the open air section of the double decker bus. The bus stop for the tour is literally at the front of the hotel so after the obligatory stop at Starbucks (there is one at the tube stop just underneath our hotel), we hopped on the bus. The first stop that caught our attention was the Natural History Museum. We got off there and wandered ... read more

So Don has started to make fun of my late night spelling so I’m just going to say tonight that we had a good day that ended with a lovely dinner with Hannah. I’ll fill in the details in the morning…on my laptop with spell check. ... read more

The weather was a bit sketchy today so we shifted plans and went to The British Museum to see all of the plundered treasures collected from around the world. The Egyptian artifacts and the remains of the Parthenon were particularly interesting to see. Don wasn’t as impressed by this museum as The Louvre as it was more artifacts of life than art. We are ready for the Trivial Pursuit category of ancient history thought for the brief time we will retain it. After the museum, we made it to our first British pub. We had a lovely snack platter and our first pint before strolling around the neighborhood for a bit as it wasn’t raining. We walked back to the hotel - another 9.5 km of walking today - and put our feet up a bit. ... read more

Today we planned to do many of the touristy things. We started out with a changing of the guards tour. While it’s definitely an option to just go watch the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, we did a tour which took us to several different perspectives. First we started at St James Palace. This is the senior royal palace where key events, like the pronouncement of the queen’s passing, takes place. The old guard came out and this time, they were a regiment from Nepal, the Gurkhas, they rarely have the opportunity to be the palace guards so it was a bit unique. From there, we marched with the military band to the Wellington barracks where the new guard came out. These were the traditional bear skin hatted grenadiers. We didn’t see much of ... read more

After a relatively uneventful flight, we’ve arrived! As we came in for a landing, we had a spectacular view of central London as you can see from our photo. Really helped make being here a reality. Customs was a breeze - used the e scanner and our bags were among the first off the plane. Between the tailwinds and the ease of travel, we met up with our driver almost an hour early. We got to our hotel and took care of the things we needed to. Went to the lounge for a small snack before f going for a walk around the neighborhood. There was a big Muslim festival in the park right across the road from our room. They even did a bit of a parade. Hannah and Felix got to the hotel about ... read more

So when you look at all of our bags, it really looks like we're either travelling for years or moving houses. So much for being able to pack efficiently! While two of them are for Hannah, we've probably still packed way too much! We'll also see if our packing trend holds up - whatever the last minute article of clothing we throw in the end is usually turns out to be the thing we wear the most. We leave for the airport in a few hours as we're on the red eye to London. I always struggle with flights that are late in the day. It feels like the whole day is just anticipation of the trip. Of course, there are all the little things that need to be done - cleaning out the fridge, petting ... read more

This is it! We leave tomorrow for our UK adventure. We've spend the last year planning and we leave tomorrow. I'm spending the day today doing things like getting my hair done, pedicure, etc. while Don has one last day at work. Tonight we'll celebrate Don's birthday and get our packing done! Between the two large bags we're bringing for Hannah and our own bags, it's going to look like we're planning to move there. We've been watching the London weather for the past week or two and it was supposed to be sunny and warm. As of today, though, they're predicting rain and cool most of the first few days. I'm feeling quite pleased with myself for buying a good raincoat. Don hasn't done any of his packing yet. I think that he's finally decided ... read more

Africa June 25th 2019

Our last morning in Africa was unforgettable. We had booked to go on a caracel walk so we got up and had a quick bite before heading out with our guide. We driver our into the reserve where the caracel, Misty, was waiting for us in a crate. How it was supposed to work was, after fitting her with a tracking collar in case she ran off, Misty would be let out of the crate to hunt naturally on the reserve and we’d follow her. Misty had other ideas. She came out of the crate and rubbed up against our legs - they told us to expect that so we weren’t surprised. But then she ran and jumped into the backseat of the open air Jeep where we had been sitting. Don had left his backpack ... read more
