Saturday, 1st August 2015 Majulah Singapura, our Golden Jubilee. This year marks our 50th Anniversary since independence and we were really happy to be given tickets to attend the parade at the Padang this evening. We arrived at Raffles Place at 3 in the afternoon for an early dinner at Coffee Club Glasshouse before proceeding to the Padang at 4.30pm. Crowds were streaming in from all corners of Singapore by then. After going through the security screening and collecting our fun-packs, we were seated at the stand at around 5pm. Our seats were located at the East Sector - great for the views over City Hall but bad for viewing the fire-works. The fun-pack had some useful stuffs this year including a food container and a scarf for me to bring overseas when the weather is ... read more

Sunday, 26th July 2015 Our SG50 Weekend countdown continued with a visit to the Istana grounds today. The skies were generally clear even though we welcomed the slight drizzle in the afternoon to bring down the scorching heat to a much bearable portion. It was helpful in that the roads leading to the Istana Building were lined with huge rain-trees that provided a welcome respite from the sunny weather. The State Rooms were also opened today and we had a rare glimpse into the elaborate interiors. This was a great Sunday to be out and about as we relived our NS memories where we were posted here during our Active Service.... read more

Saturday, 25th July 2015 There were simply too many "freebies" to partake as we approached closer to the SG50 Weekend proper in August 2015. In fact, the inaugural SIA Open House was also held this weekend and I would probably have registered for it should I had known it earlier. Anyway, we decided to pop by at the National Orchid Garden located within our very first UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The usual $5 admission was waived for all Singaporeans from now till end of August 2015. Mum and dad were pretty bored looking at the animals when we visited the zoo two weekends ago. The situation was quite different when we visited the orchid garden as they were happily snapping shots of the beautiful orchids of varying colours. To minimise walking ... read more

Friday, 17th July 2015 We wouldn't coin it as a perfect staycation as we believed that the Carlton could do much better. The deluxe rooms that we stayed in were refurbished recently even though the separate shower stalls leave much room to be desired. The smallish design does not allow you to leave your clothes inside the shower as they would get wet easily. The smallish size extended to the outdoor pool which was inadequately designed to cope with the 900 odd guestrooms. Coffee sachets were from "Super" which did not enhance the overall stay experience. As far as staycation is concerned, I would probably avoid this 4 star property in future. The highlight of our stay was probably a nice congee lunch at Imperial and a great shopping experience at Raffles City Marketplace. Our dinner ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Zoo July 11th 2015

Saturday, 13th July 2015 We were supposed to utilise daddy's and mummy's complimentary admission to the Singapore Zoo as part of their Senior Citizen's Package. In the end, I managed to obtain the corporate pass from the company where I worked with for our free admission to the Singapore Zoo (UP: $32 per person). The entire journey was relatively fuss free. After our mee siam breakfast at AMK, we were soon on our way to the zoo via bus 138 from AMK Bus Interchange. The whole commute took about 30 minutes as the bus was travelling in good speed. We arrived at the zoo at 11 plus in the morning. A short walk from the gantries was the Frozen Tundra where Inuka, the last survivor of the polar bear family greeted us. He had the huge ... read more

Saturday, 13th June 2015 As part of the SG50 celebrations, my folks at home were given complimentary tickets while I was entitled to a 50% discount off the admission fees to the Gardens By the Bay. This was an impromptu weekend outing as my folks have up till 31st August to utilised their free entries. Having only been to the outer rims of the gardens in the past, I was delighted to be able to make full use of my discounted entry into the 2 domes this morning. Upon arrival at the Cloud Forest enclosure, we were greeted with much excitement by the 7 storeys high waterfall. This was one big green wall project that required plenty of efforts and costly regime to maintain in a controlled environment. Walking through the mist-covered forest canopy at the ... read more

Saturday, 22nd November 2014 I always wanted to do a blog of this wonderful place at the heart of Orchard Road. Having visited Ion Sky since last November, this entry came half a year late. I remembered vividly when the observatory was first opened, it charged a fee of $15 for the admission to Level 55. This was however waived and I was able to get in for free when I visited. I chit-chatted with the friendly concierge who informed me that the observatory is opened to the public everyday except when it is closed for private events. Getting to the top of Ion Sky is straight forward. Access is provided via a pair of fast moving elevators at level 4 of the shopping mall where the Ion Art Gallery is located. Once at level 55, ... read more

Saturday, 16th May 2015 A visit to the Punggol Settlement followed by a hearty dinner at the House of Seafood. This was our belated Mother's Day gift for we refused to pay for the hi-jacked prices last weekend. Ever since daddy retired from his work, he had not been to Punggol Point for the last 10 years. I could see that he was very excited about this trip including the bus service 84 journey from the interchange. Memories surfaced as he was quick to point out the various spots that evoked his deep memories of this place. Punggol Point is popular with families and it is not difficult to see why. It is virtually next to the sea with stunning sunset views overlooking the state of Johor. We arrived early and had some picture-taking time at ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Changi May 2nd 2015

Saturday, 2nd May 2015 I was happy to land myself on the Agoda Mystery Deal for a nice weekend staycation at Changi Cove Hotel. What we really liked about Changi Cove was the peaceful and leafy surroundings which was a premium in urban Singapore. The bright and welcoming lobby was very nicely done up considering the high ceilings and spacious interiors. About 5 minutes from where we stayed were the 2.2km Changi Boardwalk which we took that evening on our way for dinner at Changi Village. We settled for western cuisine at Jacob's Café, a homely place at the heart of town. Frankly speaking, I was seeking for some design inspirations for my new house. And I really liked the simplicity of the bedrooms at Changi Cove. It was nothing closed to luxurious but comfortable for ... read more

Easter Friday, 3rd April 2015 A hearty buffet lunch followed by a nice weekend stay at one of their lovely rooms. For the great prices we paid, we couldn't ask for more. ParkRoyal on Beach Road had been one of my preferred hotels when it comes to weekend staycations. Their room rates are not overly-expensive and the modern room condition is a nice touch considering that the hotel had been around for quite sometime. While the immediate neighbourhood might not have a lot to offer, this hotel is a comfortable stroll from Bugis Station where numerous malls dotted the landscape. Of course, if you are like us who aspire to spend more time in the hotel, the spacious swimming pool is sure to delight. Forget about the room service menu as similar local offerings could be ... read more
