13th - 16th November 2016 This was my first trip overseas alone with YP and we picked a location that we were most familiar with - Bangkok, a popular weekend destination for many Singaporeans. Since my first trip in December 2003, this was perhaps my 5th time in the Thai capital as I recalled. The last time I was here was in late 2014 after covering Penang and Hua Hin on my week-long vacation. Bangkok was perhaps a convenient place for me to get cheap flight tickets home. We took Singapore Airlines for our trip with an early departure time from Changi Airport. Our fried carrot cake onboard was quite delicious and given that this was a short flight we arrived there in no time. We decided to use the airport train to travel to our ... read more

Saturday, 24th October 2015 I started my day early following a hearty buffet breakfast at the hotel. With a good selection of quality items coupled with tip-top Japanese service standards, this was worth my 1,200 yen. I planned to do some outlet shopping today at the Marinoa City but since it was quite early, I visited the Ohori Park first instead. Exiting from the subway station, I entered the park grounds through the Northern Gate which was already teeming with morning joggers. The centre piece of the park is a huge lake connected by a long bridge to both sides of the expansive park space. When it was time to start my shopping day, I continued my journey towards the end of the subway line to Meinohama Station where I caught another bus to the Marinoa ... read more

Friday, 23rd October 2015 Following my 3 nights excursion in Kagoshima with a brief stopover at Kumamoto, I was back at Hakata this afternoon. It was the same JR Station that greeted me when I arrived at 2pm - choke full of people, suffocating at times and yet full of energy and convenience as I made my way to my hotel. Hakata Green Hotel was where I was going to stay following the not-so-inspiring stay at Hotel Nikko a couple of days ago. This was a good hotel with newly refurbished rooms and a very welcoming lobby and staffs. I was given a room on the highest possible floor which commanded a nice view of the city through the somewhat smallish windows. I was going out again, making full use of my Kyushu Railway Pass for ... read more

Friday, 23rd October 2015 Today is the final day where I could travel for free on my 5-Day Kyushu Pass. And without deviating too much from my itinerary, I decided to make a quick stopover at the city of Kumamoto before continuing my journey to Hakata on the Shinkansen. My main reason for stopping by at the city was to visit the famed castle as well as having a slurp at the original Ajisen Ramen Store located at the heart of the city. After parking my luggage at the JR station, I boarded the city tram and alighted at the Castle Station some 8 stops later. Following Wikitravel's recommendation, I took a lift up the City Hall Building to enjoy a free bird's eye view of the castle buildings before venturing into the compounds later. Like ... read more

Thursday, 22nd October 2015 I jumped into one of the sushi restaurants within JR Kagoshima Station for dinner. My sushi experience was however a mixed affair. The Tamago Sushi and Chawanmushi tasted great. However, the Kagoshima Special sushi was just so-so. The salmon tasted fresh even though it was nothing to rave about. After dinner, I wandered around the city and headed to the riverside to enjoy the cool breeze at night. This was my final evening in the city and I was determined to end my trip on a sweet note. With the giant ferris wheel right behind me, I hurried to one of the restaurants that served the Shirokuma. This was a shaved ice dessert topped with various fruits and condensed milk and made to shape like a bear. Very kawaii and certainly a ... read more

Thursday, 22nd October 2015 After travelling about an hour on the iconic Ibusuki-no-Tamatebako train with a stopover at Kiire Station, I finally reached the seaside town of Ibusuki. I liked that we were given a warm welcome by the local people as soon as our train pulled into the platform. The train journey was eventful with the stewardess going around the cabin taking pictures for us. From the station, I hopped onto a local bus which brought me straight to the gates of Saraku Sand Bath. This was the reason why I was here today - to experience the sensation of bathing under the heat of volcanic ash by the sea. As touristy as it sounds, this was a well-managed place where English signage was prevalent to orientate users around the place. After changing to my ... read more

Thursday, 22nd October 2015 For my day trip from Kagoshima to Ibusuki city today, I booked my train seat on the Ibusuki No Tamatebako Express. The train plies the hourly journey between the two cities three times daily. This is a really popular sight-seeing train which I soon realised as it was filled with excited passengers who were busy snapping pictures. The interior of the train is made up of premium teak material (which created a really warm atmosphere) coupled with unique swivel chairs that resemble that of a hair salon. I made my seat reservation for the 9.58am train the day before at the ticket office with my Kyushu Pass. This was easily done and as the train started making its way towards Ibusuki, I was pretty sure that the journey was as interesting as ... read more

Wednesday, 21st October 2015 I have a full day in Kagoshima today to explore the city proper. With sights scattered along the major public transportation points, this was an easy journey that allowed plenty of time for me to reflect in between places of interest. Starting from the JR Kagoshima Station, my first stop for the day was a visit to the Museum of the Meiji Restoration. Located along the Kotsuki River, this was a mere 5 minutes from where I started. Other noteworthy sites around the vicinity included the birthplace of Saigo Takamori as well as a replica of the Samurai House which was a common sight during the pre-Meiji Restoration era. After immersing myself on some Japanese history, I took to the Shiroyama Observatory which commanded a great view of downtown Kagoshima and Sakurajima ... read more

Tuesday, 20th October 2015 After breakfast at Royal Host in Fukuoka this morning, I travelled south to the city of Kagoshima today. This was as far as the Shinkansen could bring me. I grabbed a lunch box that was too beautiful to eat from the train station. It was delicious and filling on my pleasant train ride as I arrived at Kagoshima sometime after 2pm today. I chose to stay at the APA Hotel which was just next to the train station. This was affordable and the ramen shop next to the hotel was really good. After leaving my baggage with the reception, I was off to the Sakurajima Island for the afternoon. Getting to the island was rather straight forward with a combination of pleasant tram and boat rides. Kagoshima had an excellent network of ... read more

Asia » Japan » Fukuoka » Kitakyushu October 19th 2015

Monday, 19th October 2015 Day two of my Japan trip. I decided to get out Fukuoka and visit the Kitakyushu district this morning. This was made convenient with my handy Kyushu Rail Pass. My express train ride from Hakata to Kokura was rather smooth as it passed through most of the minor stations along the way. Alighting at Kokura station some 40 minutes later, I continued my journey to Mojiko Retro Town where the Kyushu Railway Museum was located. This was about 15 minutes of local train ride from Kokura. As soon as I got off from my train, I was greeted by a retro station building. Some upgrading works were on-going and the façade was concealed by the hoardings. There were signs pointing to the Railway Museum. I stood outside for a while and gathered ... read more
