Today we head to Dubai. Dubai is an interesting place. Basically it’s Chatswood Chase with a bunch of blokes wandering around in dresses. Over the next day we don’t get any further than about 50 metres from our hotel, we are treated to a slap up Arabic meal by the O’Connors, Becs and Constance put the final nail in the finances and even Gus has a go and my wife gives me a cold that nearly kills me. So what may be last the fully funded family holiday has drawn to a close. I am now on the 13thflight (Austrian Airlines getting out of the picture saved two flights). Gus and Constance are on the long route home via Bangkok while I’m in Business finishing the blog. I will share my strategy for getting decent wine ... read more

Salzburg is a beautiful town with an old centre with a massive cliff which was obviously useful for defence. Our BnB is literally just outside the old town. We visit the Modern Art Museum which was a dud. Nice building set on the cliff (the stairs test your fitness). We meet Jac and Red for lunch at the Sternbrau and Becs buys even more decorations at the Christmas Market. We agree to meet Jac and Red at dinner and head off to the fortress. After climbing up to the Fortress I do start to wish that I had found the funicular. Salzburg (and Hallstat) are famous for salt, hence the name. Salt was mined at places like Hallstat and brought down the river. Taxes were extracted. The fortress at Salzburg was extended over the centuries and ... read more

On arrival at Hallstat it is teaming with Chinese tourists. It is almost impossible to visualise how many Chinese tourists are there and remember they are just the ones that make it to the real Hallstat. Gus who is not the most patient wants to hit the ski fields immediately. A quick check with reception and some amazing German bus timetable reading and we are on the 5 minute bus ride to Obertraun. Red and I decide to drink while Gus goes up the gondola and skis. On the way back his review of Obertraun is mixed. When we get back to Hallstat it is deserted. The buses are gone and we have the town to ourselves. We do discover the issue with Hallstat though. The place shuts down at about 7pm. We are lucky to ... read more

Toda we head from Fez to Casablanca. Our taxi arrives on time and our driver speaks English so all is looking good. We first head to Volubius which is a Roman city outside of Mekness. Becs wants to get a guide but Constance is convinced we can self guide using Lonely Planet. Inevitably this leads to an argument, to settle the peace Gus runs off to find a guide. I would probably say that even though he was difficult to understand sometimes the guide was worth the DHM150 (the Chief Negotiator wanted to have a crack at him but we convinced here that Gus had already negotiated very hard). Although Constance did follow us around with the Lonely Planet trying to prove that it could have been done just as easily. After Volubius we head for ... read more

We arrive safely in Salzburg at midnight after taking flights 8,9 and 10. Unfortunately there is nothing memorable other than a very pleasant dinner at Vienna Airport in Jamies’ (that bloke gets everywhere). The Austrian Airlines flight from Vienna to Salzburg is staffed entirely by elves. As well as being complete bastards it seems they also have the world’s worst cabin crew uniforms consisting of red hats, white blouses with red vests, red skirts, red tights and red shoes. Serves them right. The next day we meet our great friends the O’Connors (Jac and Red) and drive to Hallstat. Despite meticulous planning (and the bastards at Austrian Airlines) Hallstat is a potential weak link in my itinerary. I had selected it after a Google search of cute Austrian towns. The pictures showed plenty of snow so ... read more

Europe » Finland » Lapland » Ivalo December 22nd 2017

Some of you may have realised that the Travel Blog is lagging real time. I'm sure that many of you will realise that being a tour organiser is a difficult and busy job. In order to catch up I've decided to combine Lapland into one blog post. So today is the day we head to Ivalo and the Nellim Resort in Lapland. It's another early start for the Whittle crew and it is bloody dark and bloody cold in Helsinki when we get the taxi to the airport. Apparently Helsinki airport has never been closed due to snow, which I know is not correct because it was closed a couple of weeks ago! They have a special machine for de-icing the planes wings (which seems a limited market), but I am wondering why they didn't need ... read more

Finally we are back to first world airlines that aren't owned by the King. As you'd expect Copenhagen has a smicko airport (which you'd expect given it costs $200 just to see it). Taking dogs on the plane (or maybe just walking them at the airport is a thing. There is a nice Jack Russel on our flight. Just before we board he has to go in his little soft crate. We arrive in Helsinki (taxi fare not quite as bad as Copenhagen), but it is very cold. Helsinki seems really small compared to Copenhagen (and very cold). Our hotel is right in the centre and there is an ice skating rick across the road in the square. First up we have lunch at a burger joint. I know its cheating but I feel justified as ... read more

This morning we set out on the 1 day packed itinerary on our App. First up is a canal boat tour. The boat only just squeezes through and under the bridges. In fact we can't go under one bridge because the tide is too high. The tour guide is quite humorous (not as good as me but close). Even though the boat is about 50% Asian he has some beauties. Apparently the Government of China and the Danish government agreed that given the Chinese like the Little Mermaid statue so much they should have it in China for a while......but then they worked out that half the population of China was in Copenhagen anyway so they sent it back!! Boom boom. Copenhagen is beautiful with all the buildings about 4 stories high. After the canal tour ... read more

I have to apologise to my public for being a bit sporadic. It has been gruelling over the last couple of weeks, but now I make a sincere promise to update the blog daily. Today we fly from Casablanca to Copenhagen which is certainly a day of extremes. $10 for a taxi to Casablanca airport, $200 for a taxi to our hotel. $100 for dinner including wine and $2000 for dinner including wine. The day commences without a hitch. We fly Finnair to Copenhagen without an incident and very little turbulence. We arrive late at our hotel which is on the Nyham canal which is one of the prettiest. They have set up Christmas markets along the canal and I'm not sure if it's for tourists or the locals, as there are plenty of both. Finally ... read more

It is another glorious day in Fes and our taxi turns up bang on time. Coinstance has got me addicted to an app called Hayday. Overnight we had some kind of power failure/surge which fried our charger, as result I can’t get in to Hayday and I’m very concerned about my cows which are probably ready to be milked. Also I’ve been running a side business arbitraging some of my friend’s farms and selling their produce via Tor. Becs is insistent that we shouldn’t keep the taxi waiting so I have to leave my cows. The taxi driver doesn’t speak any English so he has his own itinerary worked out for us. He takes us up to Borj Sud (you guessed it), the palace, the tannery and a pottery place. The last two are of course ... read more
