There is no worse way to wake up in the morning than having Brush Turkeys falling out of the sky. I kid you not. The resident Brush Turkeys of Alligator Creek sleep in the trees. In a co-ordinated morning wake up mission, they return to earth on mass. It’s most disturbing and I, still reeling from an ignominious defeat at the hands of ‘sly hand Whittle’ in round 2 of the scrabble challenge the previous evening, was not in the best of humour to start with. Things started to improve when we mounted the ‘save the frog from the drain’ expedition. Chris personally dismantled the plumbing system of one of the sinks and was left holding the length of pipe with the frog in it. It appeared that the frog didn’t want to be rescued after ... read more

Adam and I are up early for a spot of fishing. Unfortunately one of Adam’s rods is snapped and he immediately goes in to a terminal (almost) decline. The beach is very flat and the low tide is 100 meters out. Adam and I walk out and cast into the small surf. Adam loses interest quickly and walks over to a “ local” who fishing and weari ng a yellow fluoro shirt. He offers some advice for finding whiting at the creek entrance which we try with no success. I pop in to the office on the way out and say goodbye to the owner. Being unaware of our fishing capabilities she seems genuinely surprised that we haven’t caught any whiting. We make excellent time and come across various examples of big things, a big mango, ... read more

Having had a solid nights’ sleep we were up early to get on the road as we had lost some time at Fraser Island. With 420km ahead we were packed up and ready to go just after 9.00am. Today we are heading to Cape Palmerston, which lies about 50km south of Mackay. As we leave Bargara we agree that this place was a pleasant surprise. We picked up some supplies from the ubiquitous Woolworths and we replaced our gas bottle at the local servo. Bundaberg first stop. No trip to Bundaberg would be complete without a pilgrimage to the Bundaberg rum distillery. Given that we were under a bit of time pressure we made do with a photo of the giant Bundy bottle outside the distillery. I could see Chris thinking that if only someone made ... read more

Today we are heading from Fraser Island. We are running a day behind as we can’t get a ferry until midday. We need to wait until about 10 to leave the campsite due to high tide plus it is a full moon. I had a restless sleep worrying about the torn ten dollar that I found in my wallet. I’m pretty sure the kid at the IGA gave it to me. The woman (4’9” (tall and wide) and black tights) at the bakery in Eurong wouldn’t take it. I spent most of the night worrying about how I’d get rid of it. We got the campsite packed up and decided to head a little early so we had to avoid a few waves as we headed in. Unfortunately it was the same woman behind the counter ... read more

I was lulled to sleep last night by the sound of the roaring surf, the cyclonic wind and the rain as it heavily massaged the outside of our tent. There was a lot of lulling time. We are of course at Fraser Island, the home of the, free to roam, Dingo. And roam they do, right into our campsite. There are signs up everywhere about what to do if confronted by this wild dog. What you shouldn’t do is run away waving your arms in the air. Every part of your brain tells you that is exactly what you should do. No, you stand your ground, look it in the eye and fold your arms. That is what I did. I wasn’t going to let this baby snatcher intimidate me. The beast in question completely ignored ... read more

We were a little slow to pack up this morning as we had to spend quite a bit of time locating the various tools that Adam had littered around the campsite. I did point out that generally things are easier when you put things back in a logical place. For instance it is easier to find the spanner in the tool box rather than 10 feet from the campsite in the grass (especially if you’ve moved to another campsite). Also we had to wait for Adam to put the finishing touches on his blog entry. In fact he is doing more blog writing (chuckling to himself) than holidaying. I had a quick beer as the sun rose waiting for him to finish. As we were just tying down the stuff on the roof a fellow camper ... read more

Day 4. I am back in familiar and familial territory this morning as I awake in sunny Ballina at my brothers’ home, having spent the night there. I managed to offload my partner in crime at Wardell which is 15km south of the home of the Big Prawn. He spent the night with a family member there. We reconvened at a café in the main street this morning. It was clear from the outset that I would be driving as it appears that last night Chris had met all the locals at the Wardell Recreational Club over a beer or two. He seemed to have been very taken with a big hairy sugarcane farmer called Jim. At this stage I am beginning to think my night wasn’t that bad after all, sitting around a radio listening ... read more

,As the result of a dramatic loss at Scissors/Paper/Rock I woke up on the bottom bunk in the kitchen at the Woolgoolga Holiday Park. Adam was actually awake so we were able to have a quick fish before departing. Like everything on the north coast Woolgoolga is a beautiful seaside town with a long beach to the north which we checked out. We decided it was a bit messy for fishing off the beach so opted for the lagoon. Plenty of small whiting but too small to really hook. We had a bit of fun feeding them. Checked out the Anzac Day ceremony at the Diggers Club with a rendition of the national anthem which only compared favourably with Roseanne’s rendition of the US anthem at the Super Bowl. It did seem that most of the ... read more

Day 2. Having made it abundantly clear to all in the vicinity the previous evening, when we checked in, that I wasn’t in a same sex marriage with Chris by confirming loudly that “the room has two beds right!”. We settled down to a night which ironically would resemble an old married couple. Chris constantly complaining that I hadn’t turned the fan on in the bathroom after I had rid myself of the last remnants of my Thailand trip. After some further bickering we finally settled down to a nights’ sleep. I was in trouble again on awakening as I had slept in and had missed an opportunity for an early morning fish in the pouring rain. Anyway, we soon put the Rockpool Motel behind us as we continued our intrepid adventure. An adventure that had ... read more

Here we are on day 1 of our epic trip from Sydney to Townsville to Darwin to Broome to Alice Springs to Sydney. The vehicle has been well prepared with a snorkel added (flippers when I can afford them) and new tyres. I left home at 5.30 to pick up Mr Lax enroute. Getting up at that time of the morning I always wonder what jobs all these people up at 5.30 do and more importantly what time do they go to bed. Traffic out of Sydney was great and before we know it we are on the M1, however it is with a heavy heart that I have to admit that I was overtaking a semi and missed Leyland Brothers World at Karuah. The Big Ayers Rock was a bit smaller than I remember (possibly ... read more
