Today we had two options, one was to stay at William Creek the smallest town in South Australia with 14 people or head out to Halligan Bay on Lake Eyre. I was keen to go to Halligan Bay but I wasn’t sure about the road I spoke to my mate Tim, who suggested we speak to Ian and Sue. Ian felt it was a bit rough and asked if I had a satellite phone and two jacks. We both agreed that a satellite phone was probably good enough, when Becs came over we started to talk about the weather. Along the way to William Creek we stopped at the Strangeways Telegraph Repeater. This was built when they constructed the overland telegraph and they built a police station, stock yards, graveyard and an AFL stadium. We also ... read more

We headed out of the Finders Ranges NP, along a fantastic track which was along a mostly dry creek bed and onto the sealed road up past Leigh Creek, Lyndhurst and Maree. We stopped in at Leigh Creek, but it was completely deserted. This was a mining town which was re-located about 30 years ago so it is pristine but we couldn’t see any people. It was a Sunday so I guess everyone was at Mass. At Lyndhurst we stopped for coffee and a macadamia and white chocolate cookie. The guy behind the counter was obviously in need of company and he sat down with us. The mobile coverage was so marginal I couldn’t write the blog anyway. We had a good chat about the various ins and outs of Lyndhurst and after about 30 seconds we ... read more

We woke to another perfect day in the Flinders Ranges. It was freezing until the sun peaked over the hill and then it was glorious. We walked the Bunyeroo Gorge which is an interesting geological trail showing the different rock strata through the gorge. Some of the trails in the NP are great although possibly not well advised as we were going through water and some reasonably heavy duty rocks which were fine for us. We let a lady pass in a small white SUV and she looked quite ashen. After the gorge we headed to Wilpena Pound to check out the facilities. And what a tragedy it is. I’ve always struggled with caravan parks after Jac O’Connor told me you have to wear thongs in the showers so you don’t get tinea. One couple were ... read more

We left Broken Hill via the Barrier Highway which is the main road through to Adelaide, after 200k we reached Yunta, which is really the start of the adventure. We stopped to fill up at the 7-11 and the Indian guy behind the counter wanted to know if I’d like two mineral waters for $4. This reminded me of one of the greatest injustices we came across on the way. There were road works on the Barrier Highway and a stop/go man (funnily enough not a female Irish backpacker). There were a few vehicles and a caravan in front. He gave us the go sign and we trundled along through the roadworks. As we came past the heavy machinery there was a police car parked on the other side. This is 100ks from anywhere. Were they ... read more

Woke up to a glorious day on the Darling River. We did hear our grey nomad mates trundle off at about six so I’m glad we got rid of them. Was a bit of a bummer that the rear tyre was completely flat, especially after that google tip. But we were only a few ks out of Menindee and this seemed like a good opportunity to check to see if anyone had died over night, so I rang the local servo. The lady asked me “wheres youse at”. Which was a great question as I hadn’t seen my hat since we started out. With the help of the car manual I changed tyres, noting that I didn’t use Cyril due to the close bond that we are developing, took the spare into town. Told the story ... read more

Had a pretty reasonable sleep in the caravan park. Woke to a beautiful morning in Condobolin. There was a guy in the shower dressed as Frida which was a bit weird. Had a coffee at Happy Daze and was served by a fat girl with tatts wearing black tights. After a 2 hour training session with Becs last weekend I was pretty confident that that her navigation was going to be superb. First stop was Lake Cargellico and it is a beautiful town with (you wouldn't believe it) a lake. But not just a lake, a huge lake. Chatted to an ashen faced couple who had just driven the dirt road from Ivanhoe to Menindee. They didn't seem all that impressed. The road from Lake Cargellico to Ivanhoe was great, although a bit embarrassing to be ... read more

Set out at 8.00 am Tuesday morning. Got up at 5.30am and completely re-packed the car because I had nightmares all night about getting the spare, spare tyre (Cyril) on the roof. Pretty uneventful really. Had the greatest pie ever at the Canobolas Tea House in Orange. Got half way to Parkes and then Becs realised she'd left her handbag in the tea house, drove back and just got there before it closed. Had to miss "the dish" in Parkes. Got to Condobolin just as it was getting dark. No accommodation (including cabins at the caravan park) due to the Abba Festival in Trundle and had to set up the tent in the dark. Had a great meal at the Railway Hotel, actually anything would have been great. Highlight was that in typical Sydney fashion I ... read more
