Had a pretty reasonable sleep in the caravan park. Woke to a beautiful morning in Condobolin. There was a guy in the shower dressed as Frida which was a bit weird. Had a coffee at Happy Daze and was served by a fat girl with tatts wearing black tights. After a 2 hour training session with Becs last weekend I was pretty confident that that her navigation was going to be superb. First stop was Lake Cargellico and it is a beautiful town with (you wouldn't believe it) a lake. But not just a lake, a huge lake. Chatted to an ashen faced couple who had just driven the dirt road from Ivanhoe to Menindee. They didn't seem all that impressed. The road from Lake Cargellico to Ivanhoe was great, although a bit embarrassing to be in a 4 wheel drive. Cyril just hung out the back looking like a fifth wheel. He was in fact a sixth wheel. I lot of people are quite negative about Ivanhoe but when we got there I was surprised. They are absolutely right. Most of the stores have closed down, the lady at the servo was disappointed that all we bought was a bottle
of water and whilst it looked interesting we passed on the guided tour of the correctional centre. Even though it had only been 6 hours I agreed to stop so that we could have lunch. The road from Ivanhoe to Menindee was everything I'd wished for. 210ks of red dirt and a little mud which had only re-opened a couple of days ago. I let the tyres down a tad because I'd read that on google and off we went. We saw 3 cars and a tow truck with a car and a caravan. We got to Menindee at around 4. What a great little town. The last digit on the population sign is removable so they can reflect when someone dies. It's on 1 at the moment which must be a concern. I guess they'd have to make the last two digits removable. Anyway we headed for the Kinchega NP. We found the best campsite right on the Darling River with an awesome view and I think we were the only people in the whole park. We set up camp and I'd just cracked an Asahi (it's all they had in the pub) when this 4 wheel drive pulls
up beside us and this old guy gets out and says "this looks like as good a place as any". As you know I don't like to be difficult but I did suggest he must have been joking and there were 31 other campsites on the river. Seems they'd just watched Wolf Creek to get in the mood for their trip and his wife wanted the company. I successfully convinced them to move on.
Lessons learnt:
- don't watch Wolf Creek and then camp in a secluded national park
- Ivanhoe is not that great
- Becs is a great navigator
- don't die in Menindee until they've fixed that population sign
