Day 1 ~ We've Just Begun (2006) Sunday, 7th May 2006 “I’m going to HK & Macau for 10 days!” “10 days!” I had raised the eyebrow of another fellow being. “This is way too long a duration for this Asian capital!” However, as the itinerary was done up, 10 days was barely sufficient to cover the 2 places really. Clare and I were here 4 years ago before I started school in University. And yes, this 06’ graduation trip helped to bring everything to a complete closure. 9.50am - We took an early flight in the morning of 7th May 2006 from the new budget terminal to Macau. I had barely enough sleep from the General Elections syndrome having stayed up late to catch the broadcast. It’s my 3rd time flying with Tiger Airways and ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Bali » Seminyak May 7th 2006

Marilyn and friends sent me off in style with a lovely brunch on Sunday, wine, champagne, beautiful Italian meal in the garden. A last supper of sorts. Then off to Bali. I arrived in the dark and had no idea of the paradise that awaited. My hotel is in Seminyak on the beach. I was greeted with a smile and followed down a winding path lit with lights amongst tropical trees, small fish ponds... I fell asleep to the sound of tree frogs and awoke very early to the sound of song birds, the crashing waves in the distance and smell of incense. I took a walk on the beach as the sun was rising (~7:30 am everyday since we are at the equator) and watched some local fishermen on the beach and out in boats. ... read more

We had a rather civilised journey down to Phnom Penh from Siem Reap; the road was tarmacked all the way down, so it was smooth sailing. However, Phnom Penh was a whole different story. As soon as we were off the bus, we were jumped on by touts offering rides to guesthouses. We have learned to expect this from everywhere we have been, but in this case the bus company shuttled us into their office pronto. Luckily we had been recommended the Top Banana Guesthouse by a Geordie fella we had met in Siem Reap, so we headed straight there. It turned out the be the perfect location for us as we enjoy exploring cities by foot, and the GH was located close to the Independence Monument, and close to the Palace and Museum. After a ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island May 7th 2006

Got up late and went to eat wonton noodle soup...Felicia’s favorite. Had some coffee for extra energy and then we took the bus to Stanley. It was a nice ride to the south side of Hong Kong Island—windy roads through the hills with really scenic views of the island. Walked around Stanley market and had a beverage on Stanley Main Road on the waterfront. The weather was perfect and there were families out enjoying their Sunday afternoon, as well as dragon boat crews unwinding after practice. Took the bus back to the north side of the island, went to a mall, and then had dinner at East End Brewery. Apparently Formula One racing is very popular in HK and car races were on TV all over the place. Took a taxi back to Happy Valley and ... read more

The weeks have flown by and it's time for a well-earned break. We worked all the previous weekend, so as to have 7 consecutive days off. The students were very excited, as many of them had planned to go home to see their families and friends for the first time since Spring Festival Holidays in early February. The first week of May is known as one of China's "Golden Weeks", the others being in the first week of October, and, of course, the Spring Festival in January/February. It is a time when a large proportion of the 1.4 billion inhabitants is on the move. Something not to be taken lightly, I can assure you! Many people had warned me, "Don't even think about travelling during this time!" Consequently, I had not made any special plans. However, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui May 7th 2006

Not quite through with the beach aspect of Thailand and wanting deeper tans before heading North into the jungle, we decided to skip across (or South) to a few more beaches and islands. Krabi, or thereabouts, was our first port of call on our southern excursion. Having ventured on yet another VIP bus to the seaside village of Ao Nan, the last part of the effort to reach a bungalow on a beautiful beach was to lug our gear on to a longtail boat and speed off round the headland to Railay. We beached in a beautiful sandy cove (Railay West) surrounded by high limestone cliffs and hills covered in jungle. It was perfect! Soon after, we realised that our budget didn't quite stretch to this and would take us 500m across the peninsula to a ... read more

Day 1 - Day 2: Week 1: Clear, sunny day; Departing Perth on the 7th May we flew to Japan (drizzly day) arriving on 8th May 2006. We were met by Richard (Vera's son) and spent a quiet day chatting and planning the next couple of weeks. Day 3: Cool, overcast: Fortunate for that quiet day as the next morning we were up early to go to the Fish Market to see the tuna auction. There is a viewing area for vistors, though we arrived too late for the auction we could see the tuna being moved and some being sawn up before packing. There was a lot of movement around with fork lifts and motorised trollies whizzing everywhere. The area was quite dangerous with this traffic, wet and slippery floors and lots of people. As ... read more

Sally and I had such a good time yesterday I hired her again for today. I could probably have managed my route over the next few days, but it is nice to have someone along who knows all the little nooks and crannies, and the language. Plus I know she could use the fee. After our 8 hour bike ride yesterday, today was much easier. We took local buses to visit some local towns. Baisha is a little north of here and it was market day there. And I mean market day. IT takes place every 3 days and you can get absolutely anything your heart desires, from live birds to dead ones, from underwear to spices - you can even get your teeth cleaned at a stall right there! A little crazy. After that we ... read more
