We found out a few interesting things about Vietnamese and SE Asian life and culture in general during our games and dinner with Rote. Lets just say it can be very easy to offend the locals if you stick to doing things western-style! - The way we motion 'come here' with our fingers and palms pointing up is reserved for animals only in Asia, so if you want someone to come close without making them out to be a pig wave to them with the palm and fingers pointing down. - While a gentle pat on the head may be endearing and complimentary in the western world its traditionally only done to slaves in Asia. So avoid that head-top ruffling of someones else's hair - its very rude! - In Vietnam girls don't smoke. Only prostitutes ... read more

My last full day in Tokyo, and it just so happens to coincide with the opening day of the Grand Sumo Tournament in Ryogoku. This is the fifteen day, once a year, ultimate Sumo contest, where fat men wearing nappies slap and push each other until someone falls over. It was extremely entertaining. I sat there for a solid five hours and wasn't bored for a moment. You get a full days line up of fighting, from the lower ranked Sumo right up to the top fighters including the current Yokozuna (Grand Master). There are strange little rituals, lineups of the different groups of fighters, the Yokozuna dance and more. There was a good turnout, especially when the higher ranked Sumo came on, and the arena was excellent. Apparently the Japanese are a bit pissed off ... read more

A day out at Ko Phi Phi: We hired a long tail boat (+ driver=1200 baht) & headed for Ko Phi Phi Lea (national park) and Maya bay (the circular bay that the movie the beach" was filmed at). We snorkeled around & explored "the beach" then we cruised round the other side of the Is to another nice little bay for some more snorkeling & exploring. " Then back to Ko Phi Phi don (where we stayed) for some cliff jumping (climbing up jagged rocks, sharing a pair of flip flops between 3 to a overhanging tree then jumpin seaward, good fun) So after a few jumps we went to monkey beach. The beach was only accessible by boat with a colony of monkeys living there ( big angry males, cheeky young 1's & tiny ... read more

Today we started off the day with a walk towards Kowloon Park. On the way the Gabrielle bought herself a new camera from Woo Ping - he seemed like an honest fellow. Also, Grandpa bought himself a new Ipod. Woo Ping did very well out of us. The walk through Kowloon Park was pleasant - a nice little oasis in such a busy city - although all the bird flu warning signs were a bit disturbing. We ended up at the international ferry terminal for lunch which is nearby. Later, we caught the ferry to Hong Kong Island (only $2.20HKD) and then boarded the bus to take us to Stanley where some markets are. The bus trip was a fun one, winding through the hills in a double decker bus, very interesting. Got to go past ... read more

We spent the weekend of May 5-7 in Tokyo. Jim had business travel in Japan that week so on Friday the boys and I hopped on a plane and met him there. It was SO cold compared to Thailand....probably in the 50's and we have definitely acclimated to the tropical heat. It also rained most of the weekend. Brrrr. We saw some of the major sites: Sony Center (which did NOT have any video games to play with BTW), Pokemon Museum (much to the boys' delight), Ginza (the high end shopping district), the HUGE electronics stores, the Asakusa shrines (a must see and definitely my favorite part of the trip), and we spent lots of time on the subway getting from here to there. Here are some pics: ... read more

So we set off bright and early on our second Jeep mission across Tibet. This time our travel companions were much more hospitable; three crazy guys from the USA who made the next week one of the best of our trip so far. We left Lhasa and headed up to a pass of 4900m where I had the pleasure of riding a yak. Ok it only went a few steps and was totally cheesy, but I did get some awesomely dumb photos so it was totally worth the 50cents! Yamdrok Lake was stunning - blue and turquoise against the russet coloured hills of the Tibetan Plateau, very beautiful. We spent the afternoon and evening in Gyantse where we explored the Pelkor Chode Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum. There were a myriad of tiny, dark chapels filled with ... read more

Sunday, May 7: I went shopping by myself on Petaling Street and got lost many times. Everyone thinks I am either Malaysian or Chinese, so it works out that I don't look that foreign. But, the moment I open my mouth, the first thing they say is, "Where are you from?" Everything here is very fresh, cooked right in front of you. I ate some fresh tofu fa. Yummy...oh, and I tried this brown drink called Barumbak, or something like that, which had longans in it. It was very refreshing. They have a tendency to pack their drinks in plastic bags and tie up a little corner of the bag for your straw... I guess it would save money. There are a lot of stray, emancipated stray cats here, similar to Dubai. Poor little kitties; I ... read more

Phonm Penh - 1st May Hi Everyone, For Jim's bday we decided to go for a traditional Kymer meal with all our friends that we met on our travels. We all piled into a tuk tuk, seven of us to the amusement of the locals. Now we know what sardines in a tin feel like...As usual our driver said he knew where the resturant was but of course he didn't!! We all got out and walked up the main road trying to find the resturant asking anyone on the way with our limited language skills....20 mins later we come across it no foreigners in sight we knew we were at the right place as it was filled to the brim with locals and there family and friends...we had two hot plates on the table where we ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi May 7th 2006

So. The train to Varanassi (the "Ganga Express"... serious) was an interesting experience. It was a packed train, with a 600 person waiting list! Finding our bunks was a bit of an annoying experience... try walking through several packed train cars with giant backpacks and bags, with everyone else trying to get through, too... in the heaaaat. aaah! The ride was 16 hours, and we got the top bunks. Luckily, we shared an area with an Australian... she frequently visits India, and helped us out a bit. Almost everyone who visits India has some sort of train horror story... we were a bit afraid of getting robbed, as soooo many people do. Crafty theives, here! Anyways, the rise wasn't that bad... we had some Quebecer come sleep on our floorspace (he couldn't book a bed), and ... read more

Asia » Cambodia May 7th 2006

Our time in Cambodia was short and half was spent at Angkor (the other half was spent drinking fruit shakes). Cambodia was not a country that we expected to enjoy and it really only made the cut because of the ruins at Angkor. No matter how excited you are to see the country, entering at Poipet and taking the rocky three hour drive to Siem Reap will test your resolve (and the quality of your dental fillings). We left, however, with a very good impression of a country where there has been so much turmoil and where there remains great poverty and scar tissue from painful times. Cambodia showed us a new record for number of people on a moto - six - and a new way to move three large slaughtered pigs - across the ... read more
