So after leaving Vattapaarathi at about midday, bit late, but when there's 11 of you to shift out of a place it takes a while. Got over to Trichur and sorted hotel out...room rates sky high, but didn't want to take advantage and stay in house again. Arrived and met up with a few more people from the Ashram and varkala...so now there were 15 of us....bloody hell from one extreme to another!! Travelling on your own is great as you get to do stuff really quickly, going to 15 is just rediculous...but wicked to share the experience with. the Pooram was awesome...I'd seen the pics in LP and fancied it...so to come back up made sense as I could easily get across to Munnar from hear before heading on to Madurai, which was my original ... read more

This past weekend I went on the DMZ Tour with the Korean Conflict class. Even though I had already been to North Korea, I thought taking advantage of this opportunity would be educational. We woke up bright and early and left on the 1-hour bus ride to the Joint Security Area (JSA). It was cold and rainy, but over 90 people still showed up to go. At the JSA, both North and South Korean armed forces co-exist in the same work environment. Though it is common to see troops from the North in the JSA, this by no means takes away from the seriousness and constant threat that exists between the two groups. There is no harmony, only the necessary respect that comes with wanting to keep peace and doing one's job. Both sides are allowed ... read more

After a quick overnight in Phnom Penh (enough time to know there's a whole lot more I need to see and do there!) Johanne and I headed for Kratie, which is a small town situated on the Mekong River. It's super mellow with not a whole lot to do but explore the outskirts and relax... fine by me! That afternoon we rented a couple of bikes and went for a ride around the area and were greeted by every single child in the area!! They all wave and yell hellooooo... They are incredibly cute, as I'm sure I've already mentioned. We got bombarded by a bunch of younger boys also on bikes and one in particular was SO keen to practice his english he just kept asking question after question. Johanne's an elementary school teacher back ... read more

Arrival: May 6 at 2:15pm. I arrive at the airport and drag my luggage into a taxi because no one picked me up. I go to the YMCA, where I find out that my host organization did not book me a room, so I call my contact, Ms. Juliana (her first name is Juliana, but they say Ms. in front). She told me that I was supposed to be at the YWCA. Great. . . okay, my taxi driver left and I had to get another taxi cab about 5 minutes away to another road. I shouldn't have packed so much, my luggage was so heavy! This guy, Raymond realized that I was struggling with finding a place and offered to give me a ride, oh and find me a SIM card for my cell phone. ... read more

The temperature here is now reaching a balmy high each day of 44-45 C. For some strange reason I am enjoying it (some of the time). Maybe it's the lack of humidity. Or maybe just the novelty of it. It's also interesting to see how Indians, and the city of Delhi, cope with it. You will be happy to know they complain about the heat as much as we Canadians complain about the cold. (Though mostly they complain about the daily power outages and water shortages. Last night the power was out fIn South Delhi or six hours ... ) I had some more gastrointestinal problems when I returned to Delhi, and several Indians told me it was the change to hot weather. Who knows? They seem to blame a lot of illness on the weather. ... read more

hey people i just got back from tibet and am now finally clean after taking a really long shower. the weather here seems so hot now compared to the frigid night at the everest base camp. so yes, i am super tired but i want to tell everybody about my trip, so i have decided to just describe one of the days because it was the most exciting and most important, being may 1st (my birthday). okay, so we woke up at about 5 am to catch breakfast in the restaurant inside our hotel. they had to open the restaurant early especially for us and they were not happy. we took off at 6 o'clock to start our fourteen hour drive to the mount everest base camp. the ride was really bumpy because we were traveling ... read more

So we have spent the last couple of days bumming around Lhasa, checking out the sights and feasting on 25cent chocolate and yak burgers. First up we saw the Jokhang, the most important and oldest temple in Tibet. It is full of pilgrims offering money, katag (white prayer scarves) and yak butter for the candles, and smells of the juniper smoke that is offered into the air. It is very dark and windy and filled also with chanting monks in burgundy robes - really atmospheric and like a whole different world. We followed the pilgrims round all of the tiny chapels where there were hundreds, even thousands of statues made from wood, gold, silver and precious stones - just jawdropping! We climbed to the roof and had great views over the city and across to the ... read more

On Monday, I took a trip with a group of expat women to one of the knife making villages, Aranyik. The village is right next to Ayuthaya. Our first visit was to the knife making shop. This small business is part of Thailands OTOP project. OTOP stands for "One Tambon, One Project" and is a government project based on the fact that many villages specialize in a certain type of handicraft, be it knives, porcelain, agricultural goods, etc....therefore to some degree they have some efficiency of production. The government assists in helping the villagers with their distribution and sales networks. At the knife making shop, the owners first served our group refreshments (chai yen and pork sate! yum!) and gave a us a quick presentation on the history of their shop and the area. They had ... read more

After two fantastic days in Bario we were back at the wee airport for our journey to Miri and then Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak. There are only two planes a day here so no need for things like boarding passes or seat allocations. There is however the need to be weighed.... I guess because the planes are soo small they have to know there exact weight.. and maybe cause they they can then caculate how much freight (read bags of rice!) they can also transport... but once your bags have been weighed you too have to hop on to the scales and be weighed!! The first time it happened we wondered if we might regret those extra spring rolls we'd had back in KK......but fortunately there's no charge for you being overweight ;0) In ... read more
