While for about four months now I have often complained about India, for example the noise, the smells, or stepping in cow dung on my way to the bus everyday--now that I'm leaving I know I am going to miss being here. The last couple of weeks I have tried to see as much of Hyderabad as I could, and I toured Golconda Fort, the Birla Mandir Temple, the numerous palaces of the Old City, attended my first Hindu wedding, and much more. So, instead of me rambling on I will simply leave you with some cool photos. ... read more

On my first day in Muang Ngoi, a quiet picturesque backpacker place (almost a contradiction in terms) I met Ernie, who was keen to go hiking the following day and was looking for someone else to join to halve the price. I had breakfast with Ernie, Brian and Tania before setting off on the trek with them. Brian, a head ranger from Canada, and Tania, a doctor from Perth, decided during breakfast to join us. Of course, there was no chance of be getting injured or needing survival training - that would only happen when there isn't a doctor or ranger around. We set off at 0900 with our guide, Peng, and porter, Weu, for the 40 minute walk to the caves. They were caves. And like most caves in this part of Laos they had ... read more

4 May thurs ordered Aman's chicken for the final time. but this this ate it at silver bell's. we asked the manager beforehand if it was ok..but still felt a bit guilty. it was very good as usual though...being able to sit down properly and not have to worry about flies or dogs. 5 May Fri last day at surgery today. saw a splenectomy. initially the boy was thought to have hydatid cyst in the spleen. so in the OT they did all the precautions to avoid spillage. aspirating the contents out first...ended up aspirating 1.5L fluid out. and then injected some betadine back before the excision. but at the end of it all, when they cut the specimen open, there were no daughter cyst, so it wasn't a hydatid cyst afterall, but just a massive ... read more

Asia now blogger buddies! Singapore is a hustley bustley kinda town. Very clean, very clean. Lots of lights, lots of cameras, lots of action. Stayed in a cool little hostel in little India. Apparently voted the best hostel in Asia by lonely planet. That might be going a bit far. Best things we did were, eating lots of cheapy yummy asian food, checking out the botanic gardens and finding a spot up on Mt Faber, overlooking the whole place lit up at night. LOL (lots of love) Chris and Grace xxxxxxxxxx... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Mount Bromo May 5th 2006

Hi all, Emma & I have sneaked away from the boys for 10 min to have a go at saying a quick hello to you all and to say many thanks for your emails. It's wonderful to get feedback from you and to know you are enjoying our travel blogs. We are still in Hoi An and what a lovely place to be, especially for a 14 year old girl that loves fashion from fancy clothes to high heel shoes. Yes we are all following Emma around and constantly saying " that looks lovely on you Emma" (just buy the bloody thing). This arvo Adam & Emma teamed up on one bike and Sam & I on another (better known as the "Crusty Demons") Sam was very impressed with my motorbike skills. We headed down the ... read more

May 4th After spending about 30hours in airplanes and airports, I finally touched down in BKK last night at 11:30. Spent another hour in the airport trying to find my friend arriving from Hanoi. First impression of Bangkok, its hot! Once you step out of the cool comfort of BKK International, a wave of heat and humidity hit you right in your face. You could alomst grasp the humidity. Cabbed into the hotel and checked in around 1am local time. Dropped our stuff off and walked to Tha Khao San for a bite to eat. Along our walk, it started to pour which might make the average commuter miserable in Toronto but in BK, it is a blessing in disguise. The rain soaked and cool us off along our walk. We saw a baby elephant on ... read more

On the overnight train to Shenzen we pass the time by reading and playing backgammon. This has been one of the features of the trip as Don had brought a travel board with him. Those of us who hadn't played for years soon found ourselves hooked again and those who were new to the game were soon learning the benefits of double throws and setting up blocks. We arrive in Shenzen at 11:30am and after carrying our heavy bags for miles we make our way through customs and immigration into Hong Kong. After a 40 minute metro ride to the Kowloon peninsula and a brief taxi ride we check into our hotel and prepare for what will be the official last night of our Intrepid trip, even though most of the group are staying longer. First, I should apologise for the last blog and its length - it's interesting to see how a fifth of the readers dropped off before reading Part II; I don't blame them, especially when Part II had no photos. This time, I've deliberately made it refreshingly shorter. I feel much better now - stupidly, as soon as I got back I was already missing the clean air, tranquility, cooler (!) climate and views. I guess it's human nature that we always want what we don't have - or are simply fickle! One of the first things I had when I got back was a litre of fruit juice and a succulent, big steak! Simple pleasures. But these are often the best. I spent 2 more days in Kathmandu, which is a city now acting like nothing's ... read more

The week has flown by! Now it is time to see as much of the sights as I can this weekend. I spent the last few days working and did not really go out except to eat, which is the #1 Singaporean pastime from what I've seen. It's no wonder with variety of foods brought together by the mix of cultures here. I enjoyed a meal with Mei Yuen, a WDA staff person last night. She introduced me to more local food and I had a chance to have my first real conversation with a Singaporean. She mentioned that a person who visits Singapore will be asked "what have you eaten" as opposed to "where have you visited" because food is so important. I believe it, any place that sells food is always busy. It amazes ... read more
