One of the major events in my Bali trip was enjoying the local food. From the not-to-be-missed (as stated in some travel books) Ibu Oka babi guling, the Murni's Warung, Wayan Batu, Cafe Wayan, Bebek Bengkel, Bali Buddha, Cafe Lotus, Lotus Lane etc. to the less known Biah Biah, Bridge Cafe, Padi to the local food stall without a name on the road sides selling nasi campur, bakso, or dessert. A meal can be as expensive as 20USD or as cheap as less than 1USD per peson. I didnt try the French cuisine here (some said Bali has some of the best French cuisinier here) coz I believe in Malaysia we can have some good ones too. After trying most of the so called recommended restaurants, the only taste I can still remember right now is ... read more

The first time I crashed my motorbike I had to check and see if my right foot was still attached to my leg. The second time I crashed my motorbike I had to check and see if I still had all ten fingers. The third time I crashed my motorbike, well I didn’t actually crash it, but that dog still has three good legs… It’s been an interesting last few days cruising the Ho Chi Minh Trail with my vespa posse. To start, its real hard to not feel like a total badass when you’re roaming the countryside on board a cherry red moped that tops out at around 35 kph. Actually I’m only guessing that’s how fast it went because the speedometer was broken as well as the odometer. Come to think of it, of ... read more

Only 125km away from Hampi and more than 6 hours ( and a couple of buses later)on the way to reach this little town in the middle of Karnataka. Pigs searching for some nice garbage, horses, donkeys, chicken, beggars, oh oh what a chaos! I like this town, although it ireally dirty and easily a source of diseases. The room that we rent was so hot that even my sheet was warmed up! sleeping was horrible! Badami was once the capital of the Chalukya empire, which covered much of the central Deccan between the 4th and 8th centuries. The area around Badami is dripping with temples and there are over 150 in the three main centres alone ( Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal) Badami is best known for its beautiful cave temples, although I enjoyed the forts ... read more

Asia » Cambodia May 7th 2006

After around six weeks in Southern Thailand I said a temporary fairwell and made the long bus journey to Cambodia, and specifically Siam Reap. The Thai side of the journey was shorter than expected, and things looked good when we found out that we were travelling on a half-full air-con coach meaning that we could stretch out over two seats. Getting visas proved straight-forward as we were taken to a place just before the border where they sorted them out in about 45 minutes as we ate lunch. Slightly more problematic was crossing the border itself. We were kicked off the bus with next to nothing in the way of instructions or directions. There followed some confusion about exchanging money, as the exchange wouldn't give me American dollars for my American dollar travellers cheques so I ... read more

Sorry no pics as yet, I just want to get some entries up in but I will have to wait to post pics until I get access to my bro's laptop. The last places I visited before leaving Thailand were Khorat and Phimai about and hour outside of Khorat. Phimai was the main reason I went east in Thailand, as it is some of the oldest ruins in good shape from when the Khmer from Cambodia reigned. It was also suppose to look like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, a place I really want to visit but needed a visa I wasn't able to arrange while in Thailand. Ah next time. My trip to Phimai was on a packed bus, but really, from my few experiences, I don't think there is nothing but packed buses in Thailand. ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Mountain Province May 7th 2006

The Philippines is such an amazing country because it has so much to offer. We went from lounging on incredible beaches to hiking among lush green mountains. Next stops on our trip: Cebu, Manila, Banaue, and then out of Manila. Like the first half of our trip, the adventure never stops. Cebu We left Bohol early to get into Cebu at a decent hour so we could sightsee around town. We found Magellan's cross. On Magellan's trek around the world he was stopped dead in his tracks (literally) in the Philippines so he himself did not make it all the way around the world (let's hope that Ryan and Misha's world adventure doesn't end the same way). He got in a brawl with some of the locals. Magellan thought he was all high and mighty coming ... read more

Vang Vieng - what a place! Unlike anywhere I have ever been before but for once the hype was to be believed. Laos had been a slow-burner for us up to this point but we really started to enjoy it last Monday when we rolled into town after a sweaty 5-hr bus journey from Vientiane. Arriving in the evening, priorities first, let's get a hostel where the action is - as a guy I once knew used to say "GooseCentral"!! It proved to be a wise decision. Now others may have shuddered at the thought of a cockroach infested room with a building site on one side and the towns only late night bar on the other but for us it was perfect, and all for $2 each a night. The licencing laws in Laos are ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Khao Yai NP May 7th 2006

In accordance with trying to keep my resolution of trying to clear the backlog of entries, I'll post more blogs today. Our plan was to spend a night camping at the world famous Khao Yai National park where (according to Brian) you might be privileged to see man wild elephants amongst other species. We never made to the town but never made it to the park itself. If you are wondering why I'm going to Pak Chong, it is because it is the closest town to Khao Yai. Before I divulge into details of why I never made it there, I should first describe the train ride to Pak Chong. Train-ride to Pak Chong The ride itself was about 2+1/2 hrs but unlike the train to Ayruthaya it only contained 3rd class cabins. This means that ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya May 7th 2006

Today was a long day. We started off taking the train at Bangkok Hualampong station to Ayuthaya and spent the afternoon cycling in Ayuthaya. Our plan was to go on to Kao Yai National Park in the evening and the spend a night camping there. This blog The train ride to Ayuthaya was pleseant and comfortable (1st clast reclining air-conditioned seats) as it costed a substential chunk of change (160Bht each). It was poring when we arrived at Ayuthaya and we waited 15min for the rain to slow down to a drizzle. We reached headed for the Chao Phrom River and crossed it by the public ferry (2Bht each). We proceeded towards the ruins w/ our full packs and it was only a matter of minutes before we start to feel the heat, humidity and the ... read more
