Today we got the train from KL Sentral to Butterworth for Penang, another new experience. I had booked the tickets online and chosen seats behind each other so we could both be next to a window. The cost was £15.50 each, as it was only a tiny bit more for Business Class, and this was so worth it! We got to the station early and went in the food court upstairs. I think it’s quite new, I remember going downstairs before. Only a few places were open and it was cheap but very average. We had teh tarik and he did the pouring it from a great height thing, which makes quite a head on it. My roti telur (eggs on toast) were cold as she had said they weren’t mine and then realised they were. ... read more

Tuesday, 25 February, 2020 cont'd After a quiet afternoon we went for a walk at 6.30 pm to get something to eat and drink. Pat hadn't had an alcoholic drink for days. We had spotted a hotel on our travels, that included a sign - “Stags head pub”, so we thought to try for a sundowner this evening. It was actually already dark, but you get the point. The hotel Casamara was near to the lake, we went in and asked about drinks and were taken to a table poolside. A lion beer and a coke. Pat was happy. Not sure about the pub, but Pat got a drink, so who cares. Our next stop was a Pizza Hut, spotted above other shops, vary near to the lake. From a distance it looked busy. We found ... read more

Dive photographers are something of a rare breed. As you’ll discover if you ever give it a go yourself, it takes a certain degree of perverse perseverance. And in our modern world of instant gratification, perseverance is something of a dying trait. Truth is, once upon a time all photography was this hard. Back when it all began you forked out a fortune for all manner of unwieldy equipment with which to practice your art: cameras, tripods, film, flashlights, developers & darkrooms. All this to create hazy sepia images of wealthy repressed side-burned gentlemen who all looked like they'd previously placed some unwieldy equipment of their own up their nether regions. It seemed to take an age for folk to discover that foreign objects were not strictly de rigueur, and that photos looked much better if ... read more

After three and a half weeks of very basic accommodation (our deliberate choice and which we have loved), we decided to end this fabulous special month with a little more luxury, here on Long Beach (Hat Yao) on the island of Phi Phi Don. By luxury we simply mean the things that one expects in most standard hotels, but not in bamboo huts. So, we have a safe, a fridge, a T.V. (which we haven’t actually bothered to turn on) air conditioning and best of all, HOT water in the shower! Thanks goodness we have air con because the weather has changed and it is much hotter now than it was at the beginning of the month. The air con is especially welcomed at night and we don’t have to sleep under a mosquito net either, ... read more

The last few days of our Borneo holiday we wanted to spend on Pulau Mantanani, an island 45 minutes off the west coast of Borneo. Our guides dropped us off at Rampayam Jetty north of the town of Kota Belud, and from there we caught a boat to the island. It was only a 45-minute trip, but it was a hell of a ride. There were a lot of waves, and our captain was keen on racing the boat through them, so more often than not the boat would jump off one wave and hit the bottom of a wave valley hard. I tried to sit as upright as possible in order to prevent my discs from any damage. Luckily neither Mizzi nor I got seasick. But the staff passed plastic bags to several passengers who ... read more

Sunday 23rd February 2020 Today was a “highlight” day. We boarded our long-tail boat on Koh Muk pier, just close to Coco Lodge, to sail around the island, snorkelling in key spots as we went along. We expected to be part of a group, but it was just the two of us and our cheery boatman, Tan. Great for us to have the boat and snorkelling all to ourselves, but the lack of tourists is not good for business for the Thai people here. When we set off it was a bit cloudy and windy, so when we got to our first snorkelling spot on a coral reef on the rugged North West point of the island, with sheer limestone cliffs undercut with caves, I didn’t fancy it at all; dark deep water, a wildly swaying ... read more

Crossing the border from Singapore to Malaysia by bus is a breeze. We got a Grab to the bus station and were far too early but I was relieved to see that our easybook booking had gone through so we were OK for the 2 front seats. You have to go up to the 707 window and show your booking, then he ticks you off and he writes the bus reg number on it so you know which one. There is nowhere to sit at the bus station so we sat on our bags in the shade and used the loos at the last minute. Everywhere was very clean and being hired down and wiped constantly. There were posters up giving health advice about the virus. The 707 service bus pulls in across the road in ... read more

Jaipur So having walked about a mile along the platform, we eventually found our carriage and settled in for the 5hr.journey to Jaipur. The Pink City. The train took off exactly on time but some how we ended up being 45 minutes late arriving at Jaipur. The first hour was mostly traveling alongside various rubbish dumps and shantytowns which was really very surreal and unbelievable that people lived in those conditions. We shared our compartment with an other couple, who where doing an organised tour....their luggage was following the train with their driver, who then met them on the station platform!!...why?!! Anyway we are now in Jaipur for a full week and even though there’s still lots of traffic and horns blowing, it feels very different to Delhi. Met up with Kevin and Elaine at the ... read more

Well we got away on time from Phnom Penh 9.45am. for six and a half bus ride giving us an arrival time of 4.15pm Ho Chi Minh City, ended up being close to 5pm. Overall it was a great bus trip, Giant Ibis Bus company, they were brilliant. We had two drivers and a jockey....the jockey informed us and rounded us up when needed for a couple of toilet stops and also took great care of us at the border crossing, taking all our passports and visas to immigration and getting them all stamped whilst we had coffee and some had a bite to eat....all went very smoothly. Lovely airconditioned bus with free water and even a breaky croissant to start off the trip. Were very lucky the bus terminal in Ho Chi Minh was quite ... read more

Saturday, 22 February, 2020 Move from Ella to Kandy today by train. Heavy rain during the night. Woke at 7.00 am, stirred at 7.45 am and down to breakfast. Eggs, toast, roti, plenty of fruit and cups of tea. Our train is 2.15 pm and check out is 12.00 pm. So when we paid our bill USD 39.12 (GBP 30.09) we asked about keeping the room for a little while. She said she had no booking for tonight, so no problem. We also asked them to book us a Tuktuk to the station. We packed and showered and left the room at 9.30 am, for a last potter round Ella. Pat had seen a “Starbeans” she wanted to try. We found it and had a coffee and a coke. Then a meander looking in various shops. ... read more
