Our return flight to Canada from Bali was originally booked for April 28th, but we moved it ahead to March 21st in light of our Canadian Government’s calls for its citizens to return home, combined with those of our son and his partner - both highly trained nurses - strongly encouraging us to get on a flight home while we still had that option. But let’s backup a bit, to convey a sense of how quickly things were changing in our world, just as they were everywhere else. Wednesday, March 11th: Conversation with my niece and her husband in Vancouver. Me: “Bali is so chill. If you didn’t listen to the news or other tourists talking about the news, you would not even be aware that anything was wrong. It is totally calm here. No one ... read more

Gaumukh glacier is the source of river Bhagirathi – which ultimately merges with river Alakananda at Dev Prayag to form the holy river Ganga. The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a Must-do for every trekker due to its unpredictable challenging conditions and stunning beauty. To top it, for spiritual people, it is of incredible significance as it is the source of River Ganga; and Tapovan is the abode for several yogis and rishis till date. Being a Yogini myself, these were huge reasons enough to get me excited for this trek, but as every moment during the trek passed, I realised I was in a place with astonishing history and could just feel it. It starts with a 10-hour drive from Dehradun to Dharali – a small town close to Gangotri. Dharali is one of the places ... read more

Kerela Wow, what a shock! It’s as if we’ve been put in a time machine and fast forwarded about 60years. Apart from the heat that greeted us at 10pm. our taxi driver was the only one waiting for passengers! The drive to Fort Kochi was on good roads, hardly any tooting, passed numerous large car showrooms, plenty of neon lights, not a single cow and from what we could see in the dark, no obvious piles of rubbish. Usually Fort Kochi is a very popular tourist visit, however all the attractions have been closed due to the Corona virus. There are a few White people around, very few! Consequently plenty of tuk tuk drivers trying to get a job. One guy we were talking to, asked if we could do him a favour, he didn’t want ... read more

Come to think of it, I and my friends were glad that we made a decision to visit Ladakh last year in August. It had been a long awaited trip and on my to-go-list of destination for quite some time. Excited, we flew from Jakarta to Delhi via Singapore and took connecting flight to Leh from Delhi. Landed safely in Leh in the morning, we immediately bought oxygen cans at the airport. We were greeted by our driver, Sonam, and also by the blue sky. What a perfect weather! At 3,524 meter above sea level, Leh is the joint capital city of Ladakh, formerly part of the union territory along with Jammu and Kashmir. Our accommodation, Sangaylay Palace, a full-board two-star hotel, was clean and homey. In the afternoon, we could sit at the courtyard sipping ... read more

Varanasi After our exciting journey from the train journey, we unfortunately had to wait rather s long time to check into our hotel as they were full and nobody was checking out until 11am. But they did give us an upgrade with our room, which was very nice. We also had a guide for the afternoon, which we didn’t realize and he took us around . We visited the University. One of the biggest in the Area especially for the medical department. A couple of Temples...a weaving village..and shop of course! Having never had a guide before we’ve missed out on the hard sell of these types of places. We then walked along the riverbank and watched all the goings on. He explained the ritual of the cremation . It did seem very odd sitting on ... read more

About 2 weeks ago, I began writing about our time in Goa and the odd transition to the nunnery, as India began it’s decent into Corona Hell. I imaged I could provide a short escape for you from the daily stress of getting sick, running out of supplies or losing your job/money during this horrific time. I’ll leave those initial thoughts here before I join the rest of you in grief and worry… Upon arriving in India, I realized it turns out taylor is a completely normal, average person…when we left the airport in Mumbai and jumped into a taxi (driven by a woman…both inspiring in India and terrifying, she was a horrible driver!) he said “whats that smell?” Has there ever been a person, ever, to react differently?!!! Social Distancing is easy in a Nunnery ... read more

I started the dog rescue story with hope. A happy ending uncertain. But there was hope. So the following is the final chapter I will write while still in India. Hope is still alive. I rescued Buddy from death by tick fever, but found he has a chronic condition called mega esophagus. I could not return him to the streets as I had planned. I cared for him and sang to him and walked him and loved him, ever since he got back from the pet clinic and a temporary caretaker on January 24. Buddy was my companion and best friend. During that time I just knew there would be lots of Indian homes wanting this loving boy. But my knowing turned to despair the closer I got to my exit date with no permanent home ... read more
