I forgot the elephants ! How could that have happened ?? Two days ago we were staying near one of the National Parks . This one is refuge for wild elephants . There are between 7-10,000 of them . During the day they are quite placid but at night they roam . The highway leading to the park is closed at night because it is considered to dangerous . You can no longer build houses in the area around the park and those who have them sleep in tree houses. Actually they are just platforms . Each year there are a human deaths , I think the number was @150 , caused by the elephants and double that number for the elephants. They are protected and the deaths are in defence, old age or illness . ... read more

We arrived back from Libaran Island at around 9.30 in the morning, walked back to our car that we had parked in a parking garage in the nearby shopping mall, and headed off towards Sukau. We were got g to spend two nights in a lodge by the river Kinabatangan to see the wildlife in the area: different types of monkeys, birds, maybe even pygmy elephants or a clouded leopard. The distance is only around 100 km, but due to the road having only two lanes and being under construction in some parts it took us over 2.5 hours to get to Sukau, also partly due to heavy rain showers. The last part of the road had a lot of big potholes, but we made it to our destination alright. We parked the car next to ... read more

Thursday 20thFebruary 2020 On Tuesday, after yet another challenging journey, we arrived on the beautiful little island of Koh Muk. The idea of island-hopping was to enjoy the boat journeys as well as the destinations, however, these journeys haven’t all been idyllic (the first few were). The speedboat was overloaded when we started off from the pier in Koh Lanta, because another boat had a problem, so all of the passengers on that speedboat (heading for Koh Lipe) climbed over on to our boat, with their luggage, and with folk sitting on the floor once again, we headed off down the eastern side of Koh Lanta, under the bridge that connects to the mainland on the north east of the island, through mangrove channels then out to the open sea. The sky was heavy and overcast, ... read more

Yesterday in the lift going down to breakfast I met a buddy of Gill’s, who had been in this hotel for nearly 3 weeks. It was a lovely surprise and she introduced me to her her travel buddy, Bill, who was staying on after she left yesterday evening, so I was very pleased to have a new playmate for my few days here, especially one who loves the beach too! I wondered when I arrived if 5 days here with no transport would be too long, now I am super happy. We went for a pre-breakfast stroll all the way to the end of the beach and back. There were a couple of dustbin lid sized jellyfish washed up. No way would you miss those, even in the slightly murky water. Then we arranged to have ... read more

Sunday 16 February, 2020, cont'd. We had a quiet afternoon. I did a little packing, as we are leaving in the morning. Lights out 10.00 pm. Monday 17 February, 2020. Today we transfer from Mirissa to Tissamaharama (known as Tissa). A reasonable night's sleep, stirred at 7.20 am. Down to breakfast and we actually managed to get some eggs, sausages, toast and coffee quickly from the younger lad who doesn't have a clue. Spotted the better English speaking guy and paid the bill. Told him we have a taxi booked. Back to the room, to shower and finish packing. Brought the cases down at 10.20 am and waited for our driver. Two German girls arrived and we talked with them. Car turned up at 10.50 am, a Toyota Prius and we loaded up and left. The ... read more

Note: If reading the blog on your desktop, this website would give a better view/fonts https://nishayogitraveller.weebly.com/heritage-travel-blogs/category/hampi ............................... All I knew for several years about my country’s history was Mughals and British, as that is what our education system wanted to teach us. But after I started reading about the true history of our country to explain to my kids, I started realizing that our country has SO much to be proud of! We have stories of 10,000+ years being said in our Puranas but – and these are not just mere stories, but actual events that happened in this very country! I have been traveling the last 3 years to just heritage sites and can feel the aura of these places – one such gorgeous place is the pride of a... read more

We met the French couple, Paulo and Enora, at Varanasi station; they were also headed to Nepal via Gorukhpur and I wasted no time in informing them of the latter’s delights. Fortunately there were no substantive delays to the overnight train and on our arrival we were able to catch a bus straight out of Hades. Yes, I admitted, it did - by daylight transit - seem merely grim... No funny business this time at the Nepal border and, indeed, we were not subsequently robbed en route from it . We rolled into Pokhara at 10pm and, hats off, these youngsters were totally up for walking the three kilometres to lakeside. Which we duly did. However, it being low season, much was shut up early and we had to take what crumbs we could both in ... read more

How quickly plans change. Thanks to the threat of The Virus, particularly on cruise ships, we literally walked away from our 8 day cruise from Singapore up the Malaysian Peninsula to Phuket and back. There were just too many horror stories of quarantined ships breeding more sickness. Still, we managed 3 enjoyable days in Singapore. You will be spared the multitude of photos this time. We’re now at Changi Airport waiting on our flight to Sydney, Australia where we will spend the next month. Singapore is not a typical Asian bargain. Hotels are expensive. We paid $200 a night for a pretty ordinary room. When a beer costs $16 Canadian I flinch! Considered the safest city in Asia, there was not an obvious police presence. Plenty of electronic surveillance and strict enforcement though. Caning is a ... read more

After finishing my last blog and peering round my dark and dank mozzie-infested digs, killer spray in hand, I decided this was ridiculous and went to the main block to see if I could move. Luckily there were new reception staff. They showed me a room on the second floor looking over the road (but it’s quiet here after 11, so not much road noise) and it was fabulous, huge bed, nice bathroom, usb points next to the bed, bright and cheerful. I said I’d move, inwardly crying at the thought of packing and unpacking again, but for 5 nights it was worth it and I could do it straight away rather than wait until the morning. They tried to charge me an extra 150 ringgits, but I said no, that was the type of room ... read more
