Tour Day 111, Cruise Day 9 – Nha Trang, Vietnam – Tour Name: Nha Trang by Rickshaw & Shopping Explore Nha Trang by rickshaw -- a fun and interesting way to get around in Vietnam. You will ride through Nha Trang's city center to view the fishing boats moored in the shallow harbor. The boats are brightly painted in blue and red. At the Po Nagar Cham Towers, you will discover that these towers are evidence of the ancient Cham civilization and were built between the 7th and 12th centuries on a site used for Hindu worship. Today, both ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese Buddhists come to Po Nagar to pray and make offerings according to their beliefs. Continue by coach to visit Long Son Pagoda, which was founded in the late 19th century and rebuilt several ... read more

The Vietnam adventure is really clicking in to top gear, as I commence a second week travelling in this diverse and fascinating country. Just a few hours out of Ho Chi Minh city is the coastal town of Vung Tau, and I thought it worth a visit as this destination hadn't figured in the previous trip to Vietnam. So it was time to climb aboard a coach for the morning and journey on down to the city. Granted It's been several years since my last visit to Southeast Asia (and I'm not sure if it's also a trend in other nearby countries) but the coaches I've been on feature a bizarre reclining seat set up as the only option. I can tell you, as a six foot tall foreigner the configuration is a total nightmare. Travellers ... read more

We arrived into a sunny Nha Trang after an eventful bus journey where we had to get off half way as the bus was filling with smoke! We went in search of an express laundrette as our entire bags were stinky from Cat Tien where everything got soaked. Unfortunately the address on their website did not correlate to a physical place - we stood outside the right street and number but it was a gift shop not a laundrette. Luckily when we arrived to Min Hostel they offered to do all our washing (even though it was about three times the price we were desperate!). So we stood in the doorway to the hostel and found one outfit each that didnt stink too badly of wet dog and gave everything else including rucksacks to them! The ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199So this makes two days in a row of nothing. And it felt great. No alarms and no schedules. And if the weather yesterday was perfect - today was even "perfect..er."Even without alarms we all managed to converge for our three square meals a day - think we are just referencing our Very Happy Buddha Clock! Finally making progress on the 6 islands of the breakfast menu. Certainly one of the biggest amd most expansive buffets of the trip (and that's saying something.) And Loraine and Mac have continued with their growing love affair with the iced coffee - the brew, condensed milk and ice - definitely a sharp heart starter.Enjoyed a light lunch overlooking the fresh water infinity pool while being entertained with a running commentary on the lady in the red bikini. ... read more

Geo: 12.2453, 109.199THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 - OUR ANNIVERSARYWe had a time change where the clocks moved back -got an extra hour of sleep. We woke up around 5am to get out on the top deck and watch the ship slowly move into the Nha Trang bay. Beautiful site. This port city is a tourist town. Off to the right is a theme park, much like Disneyland and a water park too. There is a gondola ride that goes across the bay. The NCL Star tenders in as there is no dock for the ship. We even saw the pilot boat pull up along the NCL Star. We had breakfast there in the cafeteria area out by the pool. Our excursion "Ancient Civilization" had a call time meeting in Stardust Theatre at 8:15am. Beacause there were over 200+ ... read more

My next stop ended up being the coastal city of Nha Trang. I had heard differing opinions of Nha Trang, but in my mind it was still worth giving it the benefit of the doubt. The positive reviews generally spoke to the natural beauty of the bay (consistently voted as one of the most beautiful in the world) as well as activities such as snorkelling and boat tours which are a draw. On the other hand, the drawbacks that I knew of included the Russian/British party scene and the Miami-like vibe I had heard about. I arrived via bus which unfortunately only had one departure from Mui Ne at 1:30pm and arrived at roughly 7pm. I walked about 25 minutes to my hotel (I decided to book a hotel as it was only $12 a night ... read more

Day seven - Sunday got off to a slow start due to the late night partying, we missed breakfast and ended up ordering some chips and bread to the room. The idea was to have chip butties however it turned out that the bread was sweet so that did not end up happening. I spent some time on the balcony looking down at the street, even though this hotel was on a side street there was still plenty to look at; scooters meandering through crowds of people and tiny vans beeping and weaving. People carrying boxes of all sorts of exotic fruits like dragon fruit, durian and lychees are a common sight. The street sellers always seem to be out in force, even coming in to restaurants to try and sell you anything from cigarettes and ... read more

The sixth day was all about the nighttime adventures. We got up and had breakfast in the hotel - I was given sweet and sour spicy spaghetti with green beans, interesting but definitely spicy enough to wake me up! We then took our bags downstairs and checked out. Despite not being the easiest of guests the staff were helpful and kind and allowed us to leave our bags there until we could check in to the next place. We hopped in a taxi to go and see Po Nagar Cham temples, the humidity was through the roof and I found myself glad I had a hat with me to use as a fan. The temples were very beautiful, the stonework was lovely and I loved the statues dotted everywhere amongst the foliage. We didn't spend long ... read more

Day five was an unexpected one! Finally managed a lie in and then headed down for breakfast, after the problems with the airport shuttle the staff were very eager to please and brought me plates of noodles and cabbage. Not exactly what I would choose as breakfast food but when in Rome.. Alice (my travelling companion) had a few words with the manager about some of the problems with the hotel - nothing serious but not quite what we were expecting. The manager offered us a few things to make up for it, such as free ride to the airport, but none fitted in with our plans until he suggested a trip to the I-resort mud bath and spa. The mud bath felt surprisingly good and it was hard not to just float the whole time ... read more

The fourth day was a travelling day, up early (again!) and headed to Cat Bi airport. The roads became markedly more orderly as we neared the airport and we were amazed by the scale of some of the huge houses we saw, the decadence in comparison to the other places I'd seen was unbelievable. I'd had my doubts about our ability to navigate a solely Vietnamese speaking airport but it all went very smoothly and I once more found myself being woken up by the plane as it landed. Unsure as to whether the hotel had received our emails asking for a shuttle bus we waited at a small cafe then eventually organised our own transport - it turns out our emails had gone into their spam folder! The drive to the hotel was about as ... read more
