It is Oct 24th and so I have about 16 more days until I leave for Singapore via Hong Kong.I plan to go early via Singapore and then take the train through Malaysia, Thailand and Laos before flying the last part from Ventiane to Ho Chi Min City.Team this time is 14 with 12 from Canada and 2 from Germany. Long trip to get to Asia. Left Saltspring on Saturday Nov 10 at 0630 with Ryan. ( he is off to Hawaii). I finally arrived in Singapore at Backpackers Hostel at 0030 Monday. The cab ride was about $20 SGD. BPH has a few things to be modest about but price is ok for Singapore.I slept a bit then had shower-back in the land of showers ... read more

OCTOBER 20, 2012: Good-bye Cambodia, Hello Vietnam… 10:15 AM– Kahn family checks out of the Veranda Natural Resort and waits for the minivan that is suppose to pick them up at 10:30am to take them to Vietnam for their 1pm ferry to Phu Quoc. 11:10 AM– Minivan packed to the gills shows up with only two spare seats in which our family of 4 squeeze into, despite having purchased 4 tickets. Our luggage gets tied to the back of the van with some questionable rope and we just cross our fingers that no pieces will fall loose on the bumpy ride ahead. 11:20 AM– The minivan stops at another guesthouse with the intention to pick up two more travellers and their two immense back-backs. The driver disappears for 20 minutes to figure out how to resolve ... read more

Well this is my last blog of the trip and I must say it is all been fab! Since I last reported I have visited many places – all so different and unique in their own way and I will write a little about each one below. However, before that, since my work assignment has now finished I should really tell you a little bit about how it has allowed me to get a brief snapshot of autism here in Vietnam. My job spec was quite clear and the academic side of things at the University has been as expected – lots of attentive professors and students being highly respectful. What has been more insightful has been my work with the children and their families at the clinic where many are diagnosed with autism but I ... read more

I seem to be writing this blog at a rediculous belated post pace, so apologies are extended. I will make an attempt to catch you up on how my winter woes were nearly absolutely avoided - making an excellent beginning to this year of 2012. As I have come to be all too familiar with the winter in Beijing settled in with a fury and the typical "joys" of government controlled heating (set by date: November 15 - March 15) no matter how cold or mild, fierce Siberan winds, colds/flus which never quit, and knock-off UGGS falling apart mere days after purchase. (I have repaired mine by sewing them together again with dental floss so many times they look like some freaky frankenstien footwear). Needless to say, this level of uncomfortability is something I had come ... read more

It was great to be back in Saigon, especially when the plane hit the ground after flying through thunder and lightening from Malaysia. You could look from one side of the plane to the other and both windows were full of fluorescent white flashing lightening. We spent a couple of days in Saigon practicing crossing the road amongst the millions of motorbikes. It was a relief to see they have installed some traffic lights with about 80% of the traffic actually stopping on a red light! Great to see that Saigon had cleaned up their streets, last time we visited the streets were lined with rubbish, but now it is very clean in comparison, with the exception of the river, stunk like Rotorua, was stagnant and looked like black tar – yuk. It is very hot ... read more

Heading south the landscape has change to flat dried rice field, less population and cattle (Brahmans) are used as a means of transporting goods Over the past 5 weeks we have seen the humble scooter and small 110cc motorbike carry the most incredible assortment of things. eg another motorbike, piled high and wide with chickens, bags of bottles, bananas, cow, pigs and so much more. Our mini bus has had to make a detour to collect some other travelers who's bus has broken down, we are now running a bit behind time, what was to be 4 hrs has taken 5hrs. On arrival at the Prek Chak - Cua Khau Quoc international border between Cambodia and Vietnam, we are asked to walk through no man's land from one country to another, on the way a sign ... read more

We were sad to leave this beautiful island. It is an amazing place, and we could easily spend a month there if we had time. See photos titles for helpful info if you are planning on going, and when we get home we will fill in more details.... read more
Diego had 4 scallops, 1 huge clam, 2 tiger prawns, and 1 squid for less than $4. These are served with the traditional Vietnamese seasoning of salt and pepper with lime.
At 3 months old, these bungalows are still not well known, but that will not last long. You will be lucky to get a room here as they only have 2 rooms, and both are right on the water.
Beautiful, colorful fishing boats.

Like we said, when we get home we will fill in the "blog" details, but for now we will at least write detailed descriptions of the photos. This island is beautiful and so far relatively undeveloped, very inexpensive, and the people are extremely friendly. We could definitely stay here a LOT longer - - wish we had more time!... read more
A couple of the main roads are paved, but most of the island's roads are still dirt. This may change soon as more development moves in.
Almost everything we have eaten here has been different and very good. Front plate was veggies & tofu, & back plate was scallops. Both were tossed in a chili-lemongrass sauce and served with steamed rice.
Close-up of Diego's scallops with chili-lemongrass sauce, $3 for the plate.
