We boarded a speed boat in Rach Gia, a small town in Vietnam, and headed on a three hour journey to the Vietnamese Island Phu Quoc. Over the years, Cambodia and Vietnam have battled for control of this island several times. It is kinda strange that this island is part of Vietnam, because it is directly under Cambodia. Anyhow, as we boarded the speed boat we were lead upstairs to a plush upper deck that definitely felt first class. We thought we were in for a great ride. As it turns out, the sea was unforgiving and extremely rocky. People were vomitting the entire time, and a Canadian even spewed all over Mike's leg. Luckily, he didn't seem too disgusted or vomit in reaction, because for all of you that don't know, Mike has quite the ... read more

This place is absolutely stunning. Beaches after beautiful beaches. I didn't think anything will be much better than Thai beaches off Ko Samui and Ko Pagnan but this is absoultely amazing. The other half of the charm is the the lack of development (at least for now) of most of the island. Best way to get around the island; motorbiking on the red dirt roads that link the island's several small hamlets. I did a tour of the northen part of the island (130km approx 7hrs incl. swimming and lunch) on a motorbike. There are not much roads so once you get on to the proper one, you don't really get lost. Ofcourse finding the proper road requires some inquiries from the friendly locals along the way. ... read more

After leaving the beaches of Thailand, we breezed rather quickly through Cambodia. Siem Reap was wonderful- the temples of Angkor were as incredible as we had heard. We'll post some pictures when we get back to the states. After Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Penh, the capitol of Cambodia, where we only stayed for a couple of days before taking a bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Vietnam was just amazing- the prices of everything are less than Thailand (which is already inexpensive), and it's not nearly as frequented by tourists, though this is steadily changing. There is much less English spoken and written, and the pace of life in the cities, particularly Saigon and Hanoi, almost makes Bangkok feel quaint. There are literally no traffic laws- millions of scooters fill the streets, and ... read more

Getting to Phu Quoc was a challenge, I was transferred from one bus to another and another and really had no idea.... I had to once again trust that I would arrive at my destination as no one spoke english and I was the only tourist on the bus...I had a little guardian angel, a local man who sat next to me and attempted to communicate with gestures that I couldn't understand...one of them was sniffing my hand.....umm yeah I eventually figured it out and all he wanted was to help me. After an exhausting bus ride I was dropped off near the port to get the boat to the island which was another experience to say the least, the "super Dong" which was the fast boat (umm not) wasn't so bad, finally I arrived on ... read more

Welcome back to Phu Quoc Island. We have been here for some time now and have had some fun and some not so fun. I will talk about the fun since we can always regail people with not so fun stories if they desire. I am now officially an open water scuba diver after 4 dives aboard the SS. Rainbow Divers boat. Got to see all kinds of neat critters under the water like blue speckled moray eels and nudibranches. Caroline got to join me on my last dive and since my instructor and I felt she was missing out from all my skill testing and lessons we decided we would leave the 50 m surface swim with compass skill until the end so she could enjoy it as well. Well when we popped up around ... read more

Hey, me again. Got some really fast internet here on Phu Quoc - surprising since it is a small island, maybe less computers to compete with bandwith. Got to Phu Quoc yesterday. Staying at a fancy resort (Saigon Phu-Quoc), which is quite nice but we could have gotten way cheaper. Oh well, we can't be bothered with the touts anymore choosing a place. It is so different than Mexico because it is so quiet, there are usually only 5-6 people around the pool at a time. The beach is nice, the water is ok, not like Phuket which is crystal clear, but it is okay (hope I don't sound spoiled...) Ken and I are trying to find the positives to this country in general. Maybe we have just run into the wrong circumstances but we find ... read more
