Spent my final week checking out the Cu Chi Tunnels (Viet Cong guerrilla stronghold) and chilling out on the idyllic Phu Quoc Island, which is located off the southern coast of Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand. I've felt really buggered the last 6 weeks, so it was nice not having to do much other than roll out of my bungalow (lots of ZZZ's) to the beach (relax, swim, read) to the cafe (a girl's gotta keep up her strength). But I did manage to rouse myself enough to do a snorkelling trip to the nearby An Thoi Islands and Bai Sao beach. I have really enjoyed my stay in Vietnam, in particular the divine food. The only thing I was disappointed to see was that Vietnam has followed the mantra of mass consumerism with all ... read more

After a few recommendations we decided to head to the South Western Island of Phu Quoc (Pronounced Foo Qua) not like you can probably imagine how we had been saying it to some funny looks! On enquiry the bus took 7 hours to a harbor town an overnight stay and then a 3-hour ferry the next morning at a cost of 25 US dollars, for 36 dollars we could fly and it take 45 mins, we opted for the flight! Got one of those lovely 20 row propeller planes, was a relief to land safely at an airport no bigger than an average sized 4 bed English house. Greeted by the usual welcoming committee of taxi drivers and set off for a hotel, fell for the old trick off the guesthouse we wanted to stay at ... read more

Tuesday 20th February today we board the plain to Phu Quoc Island for a “break” from city life bless us we’ve been working so hard. We arrive at the airport which was surprisingly larger than I first thought, tidy and well organized, we stood around looking lost in the international flight area, waiting for our flight to come up on the screen and then got shown to the domestic flight area. We checked in and had some breakfast I went for the shrimp and sugar cane dish, as it was cheap when it arrived I could see why a tic tac would have been more filling than this. So with stomach grumbling we boarded the…..umm airplane the smallest I’ve been on, it had propellers and only 17 rows of 4 seats despite this it was a ... read more

Greetings Fellow Bioinformaticians, I am writing to you from the Peoples Committee for the Accurate reportage of Travel and Ice Skating here in the depths of Communist Party HQ in Saigon. Today's blog will be about our ill-fated attempt to reach the supposed Island paradise of Phu Quoc. What follows is a tale in the tradition of National Lampoons Vacation and Speed (mostly National Lampoons). Saigon: January 4th 2007. A meeting at a cafe in a darkened Hemway takes place between two Swiss and two Australians Ueli: You must come, you simply must, we can't complete our mission we two only (slams fist on table takes a bite from an imported block of Swiss cheese) Dominator: Ueli's right, we need your expertise and your sexy times skills. We just can't carry on without you. Please you ... read more

Today we rented 2 motorbikes to tour the island some more. We headed south along the dusty red clay roads. Our first stop was at the Phu Quoc Pearl farm where we got to see how they farmed pearls then we perused their lovely pearl jewelry that is offered for sale. They are even growing these pearls on the inside of the shell in heart and Buddha shapes. Not really my thing as I prefer the round ones but still sort of interesting nontheless. We then drove for many km's along the coastline. Miles after miles of empty sand beaches fringed with palm and coconut trees and the occasional shack-like home. Some homes nicer than others but most made of fronds and tarps. We arrived in the busy town of An thoi. There were alot of ... read more

Business first :) Anyone is welcome to share my blog - it is a public one and you can pass on the link and they can check it from their own computers. Back to the current programming.... Started the day off with Ty farting and soiling his pj's and Reegan complaining of a sore tummy, then proceeding to vomit a few times. So we decided that staying at the resort was a good idea - no trekking today. About 1 1/2 hours later they were both fine and playing at the beach. Had the Vietnamese woman come over to check the progress of the hair growth on my legs again LOL. It was "very good, very good" but once again I told her to wait until friday. The travelling "estheticians" seemed to have a quiet day ... read more

Up at 4:30 to catch the 5:15 taxi to the airport. Killer getting up that early. The flight to Phu Quoc was 1 hour long. I met a lady on the flight who moved away from PQ to New Zealand 16 years ago and was going back to visit for the first time. She gave me her business card and cel phone # to call if we had any problems. How nice of her. We had booked our first night in Phu Quoc at the Hiep Hoa resort based on the recomendations of one of Madam Cucs girls. We arrived and check out our room. Yes it was indeed large as they said, but had only 2 double beds in it and no other furniture in the huge box of a room. To boot, the end ... read more

So the last time I blogged, I was in Phnom Penh. I was a simpler man, naive, and believed that basically all men are good. But already I'm sort of getting ahead of myself. So in Phnom Penh, we rented a motorbike again, mainly because Amit wanted to practice before coming to Phu Quoc Island. We biked around the city a little, and I transferred my photos onto a DVD at an internet cafe run by some Chinese Cambodians, and made a few friends. At night, we went out to have dinner at the river front, and I burned my leg. How did I burn my leg you ask? Well I was on the ground, and my right leg was resting on the exhaust pipe of the motorbike. Why was my leg resting on the exhaust ... read more
