Farewell Penom Penh So I had to tempt fate and get a moto again cause I love riding that thing around. I had some arguments for it being cost effective but this was just an excuse. So shugi and I are headed to dinner at night and I T-boned two guys on another moto at a busy intersection. I remember heading straight for them having dodged some others, braking and then finding myself on my back on the street amazed that I was fine other than a pain in my knee. Shugi was fine too sustaining a superficial burn to his calf. The other guys seemed to get the worst of it from the trail of gasoline dripping from their bike as they dragged it away. So I figured it was time to peace out and ... read more

Week 5. Hello from the beautiful shores of Phu Quoc Island. While you guys are working extremely hard in the office sheltering from the grey, wet and murky UK weather, I've been having a very stressful time lounging around on white sandy beaches, riding mopeds and drinking cocktails by the sea... On Monday last week I joined a two-day organised tour from Saigon to visti the Mekong Delta, which was basically just a convenient way to reach Phu Quoc for some serious relaxation before heading to Cambodia. Monday was spent boating around various tributaries in the river delta with the tour group and visiting various 'tourist' attractions such as a coconut candy factory, a honey wine factory (more like small workshops) before being bussed to the town of Cantho. Even though these short trips pack a ... read more

Our last few days have been very busy. In Saigon we decided to visit the zoo and ended feeling like we were the main attraction. Never have felt so unwelcome before, usually everyone over here is so friendly but I guess when it comes to their animals westerners aren’t meant to be there. We were also quite shocked by the way they treated their animals, by the alligator cage they had a basket of rocks so I’m thinking your meant to throw one in to make them move but ooo no these people were taking handfuls and throwing them as hard as they could and right into there faces. The poor things. As well with the lions they were poking them in the face with a stick and throwing things at him. We decided to leave ... read more

My exit from Phu Quoc Island was an adventure all by itself. My boat to the mainland was suppose to leave at 1:20 PM and I was to catch a motorbike ride of approximately 30 kms at 12:15 in order to have a nice liesurely ride along the dusty road with safety being uppermost in mind. Well, I made the mistake of taking in a two hour massage at 10 AM thinking that would leave me 15 minutes to get my stuff together. Guess what happened !!!!! I fell asleep and next thing i knew the motorbike driver was tapping me on the shoulder saying lets go, we are late, maybe we no catch boat in time. Well, talk about moving from serenity and perfect peace to panic stations in the matter of 5 seconds. We ... read more

Well its been several days since my last entry and I have a lot of stuff to share with you guys. It feels great to be out of the big city Saigon and into what can be described as relative country side but never really leaving a built up area. I left Saigon on Tues. Nove 7th and headed for Rach Gia on the south coast of vietnam to catch the fast boat to Phu Quoc Island and a week of beach bliss. The bus trip was another 8 hour adventure of mostly under repair roads, lots of dirt and gravel , dusty conditions with more bumps and pot holes than you would believe. The Alaska Highway in comparison was a four lane, paved super highway. The bus was packed shoulder to shoulder which seems to ... read more

After a while in the city with lots of traffic and the humidity, and the noise ...it was time for me truly to have a vacation from a vacation, a rest and relaxation, and a quietness. So, again, without much discussing with friends, or advanced planning , I headed out to the Tan son Nhat airport, and asked for a roundtrip ticket to Phu Quoc Island myself. Arrived in Duong Dong airport at noon. While other passengers were waiting for their luggage, I looked around for a desk to book my accommodation. No one was at the desk. I was approached by a guy asking me if I were looking for a hotel. Yes, I told him. and He started the sale pitch. He wanted me to stay in his "assigned" resort so to get ... read more

Country number 4...Vietnam; new country, new language and most importantly new beer. First of all apologies for the length of this blog entry....lots to say! We decided after much discussion, reading and talking to other travellers to bypass the over trekked Saigon to Hanoi route of Vietnam (up the spine of the country) in favour of touring around the south (The Mekong Delta & Saigon) and the north (Hanoi, Halong Bay & Sapa). Time is limited and this is one long country, so with this in mind we left Phnom Penh to travel by slow boat to Chau Doc in Vietnam. Step one was a comfortable if snug minibus from our hotel to the bus company. We waited a while there and chatted with a tuktuk driver who spoke better Irish than most leaving certs, after ... read more

My stomach is fucked up and the shit is pouring through me like water in ... read more
