Arrived and was very happy to see a guy waiting with my name on a sign (love that!) - there was another person on it too, but they couldn't find him so left without him! New international airport here - huuuuuuge and deserted practically. Seastar resort - resort is quite a grand name for it, as there is no pool, but big rooms, enormous bathroom, mosquito net over the bed (although I haven't found one in the room yet), excellent food in the beach restaurant and my room, one of the furthest, is only 25m from the beach, so not too arduous! I have a semi-detached bungalow with interconnecting door, which can be a real pain as you hear every cough, sneeze and much, much worse, but luckily my neighbours are v quiet. At $50 a ... read more

After a lazy day reading and eating on the beach (30p for a delicious mango she cut up for me), I decided to venture out onto the main road for dinner. Early, so no-one was actually in the restaurants at the end of the track, so I walked along the road (black was not the best colour to wear for this particular activity - you really need the scooters to see you in the dark!) until I found one that wasn't deserted. V disappointing - the cheap spring rolls arrived on a plate with nothing else, so I went back to the resort and had dinner 2 in the restaurant there with the v nice elderly couple from Israel. Sadly, this meant having another 45p beer. Bright and early for my snorkelling trip, which I booked ... read more

14 to 16 February 2013 - This is Part 1 of my 6-day solo trip in the Mekong Delta from 14 to 19 February 2013. On this trip I traveled by local bus and motorbike. I have been to the Mekong Delta many times in the past, however there were some new places I wished to see. After I celebrated the New Year’s Eve (Tết) with my family in Sài Gòn and made a short trip to Phnom Penh, I took a bus to Hà Tiên. This town is located 342km southwest of Sài Gòn and only 7km from the Vietnam – Cambodia international border crossing. It is also famous for beaches and beautiful landscape. I left my passport in Sài Gòn, so it was pity I couldn’t make a trip to Kep, Kampot and Sihanoukville, ... read more

Geo: 10.3812, 104.486I leave for Ha Tien the next morning which isn't far away, it's a lovely cycle along the coast and I realise I'm going to miss Vietnam. Just before I get into Ha Tien there's a big billboard for the 'Superfast' ferry over to Phu Quoc so I decide to go down and try and get a refund on my ticket. I was pleasantly surprised when I did get a full refund although they never gave a reason for my boat being cancelled, but I had to be back on the mainland as my visa is due to expire tomorrow.Ha Tien looks a lovely place so instead of heading straight into Cambodia I spend my last night here as my refund paid for my room. Ha Tien has a lovely riverside and walkway which ... read more

Geo: 10.3041, 103.997I had a nice journey over to Phu Quoc Island on the superfast ferry which had us there in no time, the only downside is having no view, and you can't get outside and you sit too low to see out of the windows easily. Anyway on arrival I made my way to Duong Dong on the opposite side of the Island but it's only around 12km away and is fairly flat. On arrival I met Angela who I met in Saigon, and enjoyed hanging out for a few days.First stop after checking in was the beach, and I wasn't disappointed. The sun was just starting to set and it was just beautiful, colors of a red and orange sun, setting on a green, blue sea turning it purple on the waves, stunning. We ... read more

Greetings All This is the first blog from our two week trip around South Vietnam and Cambodia over the Christmas and new year’s period. We flew into HCMC late at night on the 22nd of January, we were both pretty tired from the long flight from the UK but the taxi ride to our hotel gave us our first glimpse of Ho Chi Minh and we were both pretty excited. There is something about Asian cities that I love, maybe it is all the flashing neon lights or the thousands of people that wizz around on scooters. Maybe it’s the fact that you often see families of 4 or 5 squeezed onto one scooter or the vast array of attachments that allows a scooter to be turned into a shop or a transit van that never ... read more

And so after one month in Vietnam, I finally arrived at my last stop in the country, before I cross the border into Cambodia. As previously mentioned, Ha Tien was a last minute decision, spurred by the realisation that I could cross into the southern coast of Cambodia from here, rather than having to head first to Phnom Penh. But border crossings aside, Ha Tien boasts sufficient reason in its own right for a visit. As the Mekong Delta melts away and gives way to the limestone karsts reminiscent of the Hai Phong/ Halong Bay area of the north, Ha Tien boasts of vivid landscape, and marks the mouth of the Mekong where it flows into the Gulf of Thailand. Its location right at the border is also reflected in the make-up of its more mixed ... read more

Step 1: Lift the faucet handle up. Step 2: Then turn the faucet handle to the left. Step 3: Wait for a few minutes. Step 4: Then enjoy hot water shower from a clean source of energy. At first I was baffled by steps 1 thru 3, but then i waited a few minutes and it all came together. I'm glad that something as trivial as taking a hot shower hasn't become more complicated here. Its funny, I was laughing all week at the phrasing of "enjoy hot water shower from a clean source of energy". Water comes from energy??? Very cool, i must seek out this energy source and find all its hot water. But just yesterday, i looked at the top of the sign and read the bit about about how the water is ... read more

So time for a bit of R and R....well not just yet. We arrived at the Sea Star Hotel in Phu Quoc, and instantly fell in love. Phu Quoc is supposed to be what Phuket was many years ago before it was built up. That is not the case here. The island is made up of beach bungalow resorts, one big town, and a very chill attitude. We were able to snag a beach cottage for most of the nights days before having to move to a garden view cottage. $80/night is a splurge so far but for being two steps from the ocean, free breakfast, free wifi, and just a good overall vibe we really can't complain. Plus the 50 cent beers make up for it. Just as we got settled in I discover I'm ... read more

Phu Quoc island has all sorts of interesting sights and activities to captivate you during a visit, including beautiful waterfalls to swim under, lush forests to hike through, and colorful coral reefs to snorkel across… We didn’t do any of it. For three straight days, we stayed put at our little seaside hotel, the Bo Resort, and simply enjoyed the postcard scenery from the comfort of our beachfront bungalow. It didn’t matter that it was grossly overpriced for a minimalist back-to-nature type of hotel, since the food was so damn good and the French-Vietnamese owners hilariously friendly. Furthermore, given how difficult it was to get there (see last blog entry), we weren’t about to chance leaving the place unless it was absolutely necessary. Sadly, that moment came soon enough, since we had pre-booked tickets on the ... read more
