After two long months of being apart, Guillaume and I had been planning a wonderful getaway to the southern island of Phu Quoc. We thought it would be the perfect setting for us to catch up and spend some much needed time together. Being quite popular with resort style tourism, and us being quite non-resort style tourists, we managed to find ourselves a small, brand new family run guesthouse. We got ourselves a really comfortable, clean room for a steal of a deal. The location was great too, a mere 5 minute walk from the beach and a 5 minute motorbike ride to the town. We were sure that our 10 days there would be relaxing and smooth. On our first day in Phu Quoc we rented a motorbike to drive around and explore the island ... read more

Our journey over the border to Phu Quoc Island was a long one. After a boring bus ride and time consuming border crossing, we bought what we thought was a "fast boat ticket", but ended up on some falling apart, old rickety thing that took 4 uncomfortable hours! It was all worth it though. Phu Quoc isn't your standard backpacker destination, with parts of the island dominated by upmarket resorts, however there are still many hidden gems left to be explored and enjoyed off the tourist trail. We were a little worried on arrival about the room prices; some were quoting up to $150 per night, so for us (who are used to paying around $5) this was extortionate. After many failed searches we managed to find a brand new hotel for $15, our most expensive ... read more

Time for a change of scenery, this time we opted for an un-developed Island very close to the coast of Cambodia but actually belonging to Vietnam; Phu Quoc is relatively new to tourism and is renowned for it's bad roads. Vietnams famously smelly fish sauce "Nuc Mom" is produced on the island, Pearls are farmed here and there's also a couple of pepper plantations. The flight to Phu Quoc was onboard a Vietnamese Airlines tiny prop plane.....fine once you're up in the air but the take off and landing are a bit of a nerve tester!! We stayed on Long Beach at "The Beach Club", excellent accomodation run by a Brit and for $30 a night we thought it was a bargain. The day we arrived there was a storm brewing and by 6pm the heavens ... read more

Chilling at Mai House Resort on Phu Quoc The past couple of days have been spent doing nothing much more than the occasional swim, walks along the beach and a couple of trips into Duong Dong. Phu Quoc is described as a 'paradise' island. Certainly some parts are, however, Duong Dong is as nosiy and busy as any other town with motor bikes whizzing all over the place. One has to be very careful of these machines, particularly in the market area over the bridge on the other river bank from the main town. The market itself has so much produce - all sorts of exotic fish, fruit and vegetables, set out in stalls along the narrow road where bikes speed past between the shoppers. The Mai House Resort, however, is a haven of peace. The ... read more

Saavas Arrives in Phu Quoc Monk checked out of the hotel and did a spot of exploring around Doung Dong town before catching a taxi the few kilometres down to Long Beach, where he'd booked the Mai House Hotel for himself and Saavas. Saavas was due to arrive around 15:00 and, in a rare moment of unselfishness, Monk chose the bungalow back from the beach leaving the sea-view bungalow for Saavas. Monk heard the sound of a taxi coming down the dirt track and shortly afterwards caught a glimpse of someone, very much resembling a famous Iranian comedian, strolling down through the gardens with a pile of newspapers tucked under his arm looking for all the world as though he was strolling down to the Park Tavern on a Sunday morning for a couple of pints ... read more

Kampot to Ha Tien and Phu Quoc The border crossing between Prek Chak in Cambodia and Xa Xia in Vietrnam has been open for a couple of years now. Even so, recent travellers' blogs have reported that it's not an easy journey between the two main towns either side i.e. Kampot and Ha Tien. The concensus seemed to be that you need to take a taxi, motorbike or tuk-tuk to the Cambodian side, walk through and then find transport the other side to take you on to Ha Tien. Monk was expecting hassle on this stretch of the trip, however, he can report that it has now been made relatively easy - certainly from Kampot to Ha Tien. There are now 2 companies based in Kampot who sell tickets from Kampot all the way through to ... read more

Men ikke noe matforgifting, kun ... read more
