I left Hanoi and purchased a open bus ticket. The ticket allows me to travel to six cities in Vietnam and all I have to do is tell them one day in advance when I want to leave. The first couple stops were Hue, and Hoi An. Both towns were nice enough, Hue had a beach that I took a motorbike to, but can't remember much past that. Hoi An is the spot in Vietnam where everyone goes to get tailor made suits. I looked around for a winter coat, but once you added in shipping I'm not sure it was that great of a deal. Nha Trang the next place I went, can be summed up as a petty crime beach town. You walk down the street and hookers come up to you and grope ... read more

Another early start, this one with the apprehension that we now feel with any upcoming move from one hostel to another. Mainly due to the unknown quality of the transportation that awaits us, but also to a lesser degree the quality of the accommodation that also awaits in a new place. The start was actually earlier even than we planned in part because of the pain Gregg was experiencing from his right ear. Yesterday lunchtime it started to give him some annoyance which was slowly increasing. As a result he awoke at 6am a full 15 mins before the alarm. We were due to be picked up by the bus company between 7:15 and 7:30 and we also had to get our reception to make sure they were picking our new friends up from their hotel ... read more

We are still making our way down the coast to Saigon, but we decided we needed a bit of a cooler change so we headed inland to Dalat. Not only is Dalat inland, it is high up in the mountains. In fact it is 1500m above sea level. This has given us such a nice change in temperature. The temperatures here hover around the mid to high twenties, all year round. Before we got into Dalat we had to go up and over the most brilliant mountains. As we nearly reached the summit the driver pulled over so we could get out, take in the view and snap off a few shots. We were at such a height that as we were looking around some clouds came rushing up the mountain and for about 5 minutes ... read more

What a game the 2010 Grand Final in the Australian Football League was, well the first game any way. I thought it would be pretty easy to find a place to watch the game in Vietnam because of all the Aussie ex-pats over here. What I did find was that once you were outside of Ha Noi or Saigon it was hard to track down a venue that would be showing the game live. Fortunately our hotel had the Australia Network (even though it was very fuzzy and there was a lot of static and I had to keep adjusting the arial) so we decided to stay an extra day in Dalat so I could watch the game. Now as any good Aussie knows, the Grand Final just isn't a Grand Final unless you have a ... read more

So after reading some not so great reviews on Da Lat, right after I was getting really excited to come here, I come to find out... they're all BULLSHIT. Or maybe not just anyone knows how to have fun like us? I mean, we are pretty good at it. Anyways, our first full day we walked around the square trying to figure out what to do. It seemed like all the 'sights' were pretty far distances from each other. We decided to go to the Hang Nga crazy house considering it was the tourist thing to do. It's a plot of 3 to 4 buildings shaped like tree's with different themed rooms (tiger room, eagle room, termite room, etc) and is as if Hang Nga (the architect) had just watched Alice in Wonderland after taking acid ... read more

8/2/10-Dalat The night bus dropped us off in the middle of Dalat at 5 am. We expected forests or jungles in the hillside, instead we were in a sleepy city without any green in sight. Our initial response was disappointment. We parked ourselves at the only open tea stand and waited until the hotels opened. Once established, we considered our gameplan. Our hotel was the hangout of "the Easy Riders", a group of vets who serve as motorcycle guides to the forest/jungle areas of Dalat. On my first trip to Vietnam, I was both a driver and passenger on motorcycles across the northern countryside. But something was telling me NOT to do this excursion. I don't know if it was the weather, or my weariness from the night bus, but I had a gut instinct that ... read more

Dalat, also Da Lat (Đà Lạt), located in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam, was originally the playground of the French who built villas in the clear mountain air to escape the heat and humidity of the coast and of Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City. Dalat looks like a cross between Vietnam and the French Alps. Many of its hotels and houses are built in a French style. The city spreads across a series of pine-covered hills, with a small lake in the center and surrounded by higher peaks, making for some lovely scenery quite different from the rest of Vietnam. Temperatures are pleasantly warm by day, and quite cool at night, down to perhaps 10C. Once again, Natalie was one step ahead of me, and had already arrived and booked the hotel ... read more

We ended the last blog with us heading out for a night out in Nha Trang. It turned into a really fun night, mainly helped by the insanely strong cocktail buckets and glasses of vodka with a tiny amount of Pepsi on top. We met lots of random people and played pool increasingly badly. It was fun though and very cheap, the happy ‘hour’ ran from 4 till 11! Ended up being quite a drunken and late night and somehow managed to stumble back to the hotel. The next day we went to the beach (a little bit hungover) and relaxed in the sun and sea. The beach is Nha Trang’s main attraction and is very nice with lovely clear water spanning more than the whole length of the town. This is however pretty much all ... read more

Saturday, June 26th We ate our egg and tomato baguette sandwiches that we had bought from the lady who parked her cart across the street from our hotel. It was actually better than all the other breakfast foods which are served in the nearby restaurants, and for a third of the price. The woman’s husband held a cigarette in his lips and continued to puff on it without using his hands while he coked our eggs. I had witnessed him doing this yesterday and had a few reservation about the cleanliness of the operation, yet he never once had ash fall into the frying pan. I thought it actually to be better to witness this in lieu of god knows what was going on in the kitchens in the neighboring sit down joints. I had also ... read more

We arrived in Dalat on the 15th June after a long bus journey from Ho Chi Minh City. I had booked us a hotel online, YK Home Villa, which was a 10 minute drive from the city centre. When we arrived we were greeted by Lys who runs the hotel along with her husband and other family members. Our time in Dalat was made even more special by her and her family, as well of course all the beautiful scenery. On our first full day in Dalat we decided to book ourselves onto a Countryside tour and were picked up at 8am by a lovely tour guide called 'Buffalo', well that's what it translated to from Vietnamese apparently! We shared the comfortable mini bus with 2 other men who we had met the day before on ... read more
